When art meets science
Science and art might sound like vastly different disciplines, but Dr Tim Wetherell from ANU believes they are both motivated by a desire to make sense of the world in which we live.
A sculptor and a scientist, Dr Wetherell talks about his experiences working with various artists and scientists on a range of interdisciplinary projects - from the monumental sculptures of body arts to growing living cells over a computer-generated head

Negotiating hegemonic masculinity: imaginary positions and psycho-discursive practices
In this paper we provide a critical analysis of the concept of hegemonic masculinity. We argue that although this concept embodies important theoretical insights, it is insufficiently developed as it stands to enable us to understand how men position themselves as gendered beings. In particular it offers a vague and imprecise account of the social psychological reproduction of male identities. We outline an alternative critical discursive psychology of masculinity. Drawing on data from interviews with a sample of men from a range of ages and from diverse occupational backgrounds, we delineate three distinctive, yet related, procedures or psycho-discursive practices, through which men construct themselves as masculine. The political implications of these discursive practices, as well as the broader implications of treating the psychological process of identification as form of discursive accomplishment, are also discussed
The multitasking framework: the effects of increasing workload on acute psychobiological stress reactivity
A variety of techniques exist for eliciting acute psychological stress in the laboratory; however, they vary in terms of their ease of use, reliability to elicit consistent responses and the extent to which they represent the stressors encountered in everyday life. There is, therefore, a need to develop simple laboratory techniques that reliably elicit psychobiological stress reactivity that are representative of the types of stressors encountered in everyday life. The multitasking framework is a performance-based, cognitively demanding stressor, representative of environments where individuals are required to attend and respond to several different stimuli simultaneously with varying levels of workload. Psychological (mood and perceived workload) and physiological (heart rate and blood pressure) stress reactivity was observed in response to a 15-min period of multitasking at different levels of workload intensity in a sample of 20 healthy participants. Multitasking stress elicited increases in heart rate and blood pressure, and increased workload intensity elicited dose–response increases in levels of perceived workload and mood. As individuals rarely attend to single tasks in real life, the multitasking framework provides an alternative technique for modelling acute stress and workload in the laboratory

Sampling hurdles : “Borderline Illegitimate” to legitimate data.
In this paper the author discusses how sampling access and recruitment problems encountered in an in-depth interview study heightened her sensitivity to “borderline illegitimate” data. The term illegitimate data usually refers to the data collected during a covert study, whereas “legitimate” data are collected during an overt study. Hence, data collected during any nonconsented period(s) of an overt study lie on the borderline of illegitimacy and legitimacy, and constitute what the author calls borderline illegitimate data. Such data need legitimization before use. The borderline illegitimate data were collected during the pre- and postinterview stages of her study as they explained how medical and ethnic cultures and sensitivity to racism as a topic combined to create sample recruitment difficulties of the study. The author later legitimized them by sharing them with the participants, guaranteeing anonymity, and asking their permission to use them
Translated identities: 'Pakeha' as subjects of the Treaty of Waitangi
The politics of translation is clearly a perennial focus of debate in New Zealand, as shown by thematic links between the New Zealand social anthropology conferences at Waikato in 1990 and Auckland in 2004. Of the many issues of translation swirling around ongoing attempts to interpret the Treaty of Waitangi, a surprisingly neglected one concerns the identities of the people on behalf of whom the Crown signed the Treaty. The term 'Pakeha' appears only once in the Treaty, the question of whom it refers to is by no means straightforward, and it would be unwise to presume that it had the same range of meanings in 1840 as it does in present-day biculturalism. This point is demonstrated by a re-reading of historical material concerning the parties present at or implicated in the signing of the Treaty, including the so-called Pakeha Maori
The design of visual colorimeters presenting a new monovariant colorimeter
Thesis (M.S.)--University of Rochester. College of Engineering and Applied Science. Institute of Optics, 1961.A general discourse on the principles of the design of visual colorimeters is presented, and a new colorimeter designed by the author is introduced as an illustration of the application of these principles. A brief resume of the experimental basis of color matching is given, and the common forms of notation for colorimetric measurements are outlined. The concept of the instrument operating equation is introduced, and the standard colorimetric notation is modified to accommodate these equations. The basic elements of a visual colorimeter are outlined, and the configurations which their functional components may take are described. Criteria upon which to base the selection of these functional components are outlined, and their relationship to the individual components is discussed. Existing colorimeter designs are used to illustrate the use of the various components, and the Burnham colorimeter in particular is discussed at length. The instrument operating equation is used as a basis for classifying the colorimeters, to facilitate their comparison. The colorimeter designed by the author is described, with emphasis being placed on the instrument's optical and electromechanical control systems. The matching techniques used with the
instrument are outlined, and the method of converting instrument data to C.I.E. chromaticity coordinates is described. A complete description of the calibration procedure is given, and the results of a sample calibration are tabulated. The initial restrictions placed upon the design are listed, and the extent to which the
final design has met these restrictions is discussed. A brief outline is given of the manner in which the basic design might be improved

Destaco ainda algumas das possibilidades futuras de pesquisas envolvendo a proposta de pesquisa empírica na sessão de comentários a textos publicados na internet para o estudo dos mais variados temasThis qualitative research was configured as a case study of the interpretative repertoires used in building positions contrary to racial quotas in Brazilian public universities, expressed in the comments to the news published on the Internet, the unanimous decision of the Supreme Court in favor of the constitutional legitimacy of the system of quotas based on racial criteria. Starting from the epistemological perspective of social constructionism and the theoretical and methodological tools of discursive social psychology in the study of the relationship between racism and discourse, I\'ve analyzed a set of 6 pieces of interactions, totaling 44 records taken from a total of 250 comments. The organization aimed to cut fragments comments spontaneous conversations among commentators, privileging those who have allowed the monitoring of the construction of positions contrary to the racial quota system. The results corroborate the findings of research Margaret Wetherell and Jonathan Potter (1992) on the speech of Pakeha New Zealanders (white European descent) employees in positions on the status of race relations in New Zealand, particularly on the issue of affirmative action programs. As this research, this case study found the arguments of neoliberal base to build positions contrary to the quota, which in the specific context of interactions analyzed, work in defense of the racist status quo of the Brazilian society system. In closing remarks, I pointed some of the advantages of specificity clipped to the study of racism empirical field, as well as consideration of racism as a socio-cultural practice of constructing meanings realized from the use of discursive resources available in a racist society. Suggested some lines of further analysis of the crude material collected, which will be available for people to continue the work of analysis of this material. Also suggested the possibility that the theoretical-methodological approach to working with discursive practices and the production of meaning can have good results when applied to research involving groups of researchers and racial and gender parity. Also highlight some of the possibilities for future research involving the proposal of empirical research in the comments to texts published on the Internet for the study of various topic
Spectrums of investment in Doctor Who fandom
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Drawing upon a significant weight of empirical data, collected in the field, this thesis proposes a set of four spectrums of investment engaged in by cult media fans: the spectrum of financial investment; the spectrum of what is here termed 'participatory investment'; the spectrum of investment in the idea of textual authenticity; and the spectrum of multiple investments. The spectrum model allows the individual members of the research sample to be located within specific regions of each spectrum and correlations to be drawn between the distinct spectrums, in order for any patterns which emerge to be examined. The thesis also reviews a number of relevant theoretical concerns such as fan studies, ethnography and social psychology
