Interview with Ruba Salih, by Nadeem Karkabi and Sonia Boulos
On the occasion of publishing a special issue of Palestine/
Israel Review (PIR) on the decolonization of the city of Haifa, PIR interviewed Ruba Salih, a professor of anthropology at the Department of
Arts, University of Bologna. Salih’s research focuses on transnational
migration and diasporas across Europe, the Middle East, and North
Africa; Islam and gender; the Palestine question and refugees; and
trauma and conflict in the Middle East. She is the author of numerous academic works, including the book Gender in Transnationalism:
Home, Longing and Belonging among Moroccan (Routledge, 2003), and
the article “Bodies That Walk, Bodies That Talk, Bodies That Love: Palestinian Women Refugees, Affectivity, and the Politics of the Ordinary” (Antipode, 2017). Currently, she is working on a book on waiting and the politics of return among Palestinian refugees (Cambridge University Press). Ruba herself is the daughter of a Palestinian refugee from
Haifa, and her mother was born in Yafa/Jaffa. PIR held an interview
with her to talk about her work and her own experience of refuge as a
descendant of Palestinian refugees from Haifa. Nadeem Karkabi and
Sonia Boulos conducted the interview for PIR
Mada'in Salih, a Nabataean town in north west Arabia: analysis and interpretation of the excavation 1986-1990
This research concerns Mada'in Salih, an archaeological site in north-west Saudi Arabia. Historically, it was part of the Nabataean kingdom which flourished in northwest Arabia (Jordan, parts of Syria, Palestine and some parts of Saudi Arabia), with Petra in Jordan as its capital. The Nabataeans were famous for their trading role, as they transported frankincense and myrrh and exported balsam and bitumen. They built monumental tombs in Petra and Mada'in Salih as well as other public buildings such as temples theatres and baths. They were also famous for their skills in hydraulic engineering and the production of very thin, distinctively painted pottery. Mada'in Salih was an important station on the trade route which linked south Arabia with Mediterranean countries. The main feature of the site is the monumental tombs, which are about eighty in number, some of them dated and bearing inscriptions. Those inscriptions are in Aramaic and usually contain information about the owner name, legal rights, and occasionally the mason's name. Little was known about the site's history and other aspects such as the economy, culture, society and religions prior to the excavation. Various questions were raised which the thesis attempts to address. The archaeological work conducted on the site included a survey, several trenches around the town wall and in front of some of the tombs as well as an excavation in the settlement area. The excavation revealed a private house which furnished us with information regarding house planning, building techniques and materials. A large amount of pottery, small finds and coins were recovered, studied and classified. The results added some information to what was already known about the Nabataeans in general and Mada'in Salih in particular. The site had witnessed its peak during the first century A.D. As most previous archaeological work had been carried out in the northern parts of the Nabataean kingdom, the results of this excavation are important for comparative studies between this, the largest Nabataean settlement centre in the south, to the centres of the north. The trade which had been an important factor in the establishment of the site declined when the trade route was shifted from land to sea by the Romans during the last half of the first century A.D
“Amal-I Salih” As an Important Historical Source
Manuscripts play an important role to fill the gaps and disclose uncertain pages of history. They provide us with the information of witnesses and stories had happened prior to the author who had heard from contemporaries. Besides that, there are some manuscripts that were written by several authors and generations. The manuscript of “Amal-i Salih” is a two-volume source written by Muhammad Salih Kambu of Baburid period in India. The manuscript provides valuable information about political and diplomatic relations between Ashtarkhanids and India, information about the genealogy of the Ashtarkhanid dynasty, information about the representatives of the political, cultural, and spiritual spheres of Central Asia

Anahtar Kelimeler: Salih Hoçu, Karaçay-Balkar, Ses Bilgisi, Biçim Bilgisi, Dizin. In this thesis, ''Safar bla Revolütsiya'', "Mudah Jaş", "Janñan Otnu İçinde", "Bu Eki ?abır Kimnidile", "Ozdula Zamanla", "Eki ?areldi", "Çıpçı?", "Kapitan Gastello", "Jigitle", "Tashaçıla" stories are used which placed in the book "Janñan Otnu İçinde" of Salih Hoçu who is one of the constitutor author of modern Karachay- Balkar literature. The language analysis and the index within the framework of these stories and the features of the grammar of Karachay-Balkar Turkish, how the author used Karachay-Balkar Turkish, and the style and literary view of the author were tried to be evaluated. The thesis consists of three parts: Analysis, Text and Index. In the introduction part, the etymologies of the Karachay and Balkar words, how these words are mentioned in the historical documents, the ethnic roots of the Karachay-Balkar Turks, the geography and population they live in, were then given information about the life, art and works of Salih Hoçu. The Analysis section has been evaluated under two titles: Phonology and Morphology. Vowels and consonants in Karachay-Balkar Turkish in phonetics section are given according to Old Turkish. The states of vowels and consonants in Karachay-Balkar Turkish compared to Old Turkish are exemplified under the titles related to the sound events of the words mentioned in the stories. Noun, adjective, adverb, pronoun, action and prepositions are dealt with in the Morphology section, and noun and action shots are tried to be evaluated in comparison with Old Turkish and Historical Kipchak Turkish. In the Text section, stories are trascribed, and then the text was translated into Turkish, trying to stick to its original state. In the Index section, the grammatical index of the words in the stories is given. In the conclusion part, the conclusions reached in the light of the evaluation of the data obtained in the examination section are presented. Key Words: Salih Hoçu, Karachay-Balkar, Phonology, Morphology, Index

Kuvvetli Yer Hareketi Deprem Kayıtlarında P-Dalgası Tespiti İçin Varyasyonel Otomatik Kodlayıcılar
Earthquake early warning systems rely on accurate detection of Primary waves before the destructive Secondary waves arrive. However, identifying P-wave onsets in strongmotion accelerograms is challenging due to high noise, limited labeled data, and complex waveforms. This paper proposes a Variational Autoencoder framework for self-supervised P-wave detection in strong-motion data. A Convolutional VAE is trained to reconstruct P-wave segments while rejecting noise and non-P-wave inputs. We employ a sliding window method, combining reconstruction loss and normalized cross-correlation, to locate P-wave arrivals. Experimental results on 1, 2, and 3 second segments show robust performance with area-under-the-curve up to 0.97, demonstrating improved accuracy for longer segments and reduced computational cost for shorter segments
BERT İle Harmonik Zaman Serisi Modelleme: Çok Amaçlı İnce Ayar Yaklaşımı
This study demonstrates the potential of a BERT-based transformer model in harmonic signal modeling using synthetic sinusoidal data. The model was trained through a three-stage fine-tuning process (reconstruction, linear analysis, full tuning) with a masked language modeling approach. In the first stage, the model successfully filled in missing data and learned the basic features, while in subsequent stages, its ability to capture temporal dependencies and sequential patterns was enhanced. Additionally, patch, time, and station embedding strategies effectively represented the harmonic structure of the signal. The results indicate that pre-training with synthetic data can overcome the limited access to real-world data, allowing transformer models to be efficiently used in these types of problems
