Papp Tibort a mozgásra, változásra kész alkotói magatartás jellemzi. Tibor Papp’s artistic attitude is characterized by a readiness to change and movement. He has created a formally well-definable visual genre that feeds on the permanent force of the avant-garde, his predecessors, primarily the art of Lajos Kassák; the past, the ever-changing present, the dynamics and challenges of the uniqueness of expression. In my doctoral thesis I explore the visual poems of his life work, which represent the diversity of avant-garde. In his first two volumes, the opening works of the oeuvre, Sánta vasárnap (Lame Sunday, 1964) and Elégia két személyhez vagy többhöz (An Elegy to One Person or More, 1968) the characteristic features of the later works, such as borrowing texts from various sources and the distinctive marks of visual poetry can already be detected. By exploring the symbols and motifs, even a strong artistic kinship can be traced between these volumes and works by János Pilinszky and Ágnes Nemes Nagy, whose objective poetic language features avant-garde properties. The appearance of the visual elements along with the motifs chosen for interpretation already indicate the evolving difference, the new direction in Tibor Papp’s life-work that leads towards the avant-garde. The poet goes on dissolving closed classical forms in Vendégszövegek 1 (Guest Texts 1, 1968-1971), and Vendégszövegek 2,3 (Guest Texts 2,3). Műszerek, órák, jelzőkészülékek, lékek (Instruments, Watches, Signalling Apparatuses, Leaks) is a landmark in the oeuvre, since it represents the shift towards calligrams from text-writing. Tibor Papp does not only introduce thus far unknown genres into the category of experimental poetry of Hungarian literature (space/poem/pictures, logo mandalas), but he also increases the slight number of works in kubus literature by his series of magic squares (see his volume entitled 25x25). Furthermore, he also enriches contemporary visual poetry by utilizing novel poetic codes and genre variants from the inventory of innovative forms. The dissertation presents the so called rings built upon the principle of mirroring, festoons (hínárzók) that break up morphemes and syntagmata, flowing into the mechanisms of thought, and strings (sorjázók), where two neighbouring syllables melt into one word. The generic specificities of the visual metaoratorio entitled Pátkai, Pilinszky és a pincér (Pátkai, Pilinszky and the Waiter) are also revealed. In the case of the artist stamps the communicative role of the postal service is combined with daring pictorial pornography and poetic texts. The cover pages of Magyar Műhely turn into visual poems, and they almost become manifestations of dynamic poetry. Beside logo mandalas, the pieces of the volume Vendégszövegek 5 (Guest Texts 5) that are produced by mental poem generation also rank among the greatest works of art in the field of visual literature. The single-lined letter typographies, the pieces in the volume Villanások (Flashes) exhibit playfully emphasised letters and word slices in eleven flashes, and can be regarded as an experimental renewal of concrete poetry and major representatives of Hungarian literary conceptualism. Beyond the use of paper, the new sign transmitting medium, the new “message mediator”, the computer has also widened the perspectives of literature. It strengthens the role of visuality and colours, it can create sound art pieces, and a working programme is able to generate regular, classical poetic forms as well. Tibor Papp occupies a distinguished place in the world’s computer literature. He is founder and current editor of the first international literary journal of exclusively computer generated works, the Parisian alire, and he is also the creator of Disztichon Alfa, the first automatic poem generator, a landmark in media history. When you run the disc Disztichon Alfa, multiple sequences of hexameters and pentameters are displayed on the computer screen, and all of them are regular both in form and content. However, these numbered dystichons live two and a half minutes at the most, and then they disappear for ever, since we do not have millions of years to reread them, and from among the virtually present 16 billion works of art a new one pops up on the screen. Thus the reader becomes part of the act of poem generation: without him/her, the poem could never gain a visible form. Similarly, in the case of Hinta-palinta (Swing-Swang) the spectator is inspired to create further forms of accentual verse consisting of sixteen-line block-like compositions of two-beat twelvers. This demonstrates the possibilities of this new medium, the computer in a much more complex way: with the help of this programme, the author creates visual poems and sound poems as well, not only generated poems and texts. However, the chapter entitled A számítógép és az irodalom (Computer and Literature) does not only interpret the features of the literary works generated by the new medium, but it also gives an overview of the history of computer literature, and it presents the new directions of numeric literature that has been renewed by the world wide web. Moreover, this section addresses the question of an aesthetic programme and the problem of authorial presence. The reception aesthetic and hermeneutic approach of visual poems is concluded by a chapter on various interpretive perspectives

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
