No full textBorn in Colombia, Schumacher-Matos was in the U.S. illegally from age 14 until age 21, when he went to court, was allowed to declare his citizenship, and joined the Army to serve in Vietnam. He was educated at Vanderbilt University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, served as a Fulbright Fellow in Japan, and as a Bi-National Commission Fellow in Spain. He also was executive director of the Spanish Institute in New York, a nonprofit dedicated to U.S.-Spanish political, economic and cultural affairs. The Robert F. Kennedy Professor for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, Schumacher-Matos is also a Shorenstein Fellow on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard\u27s Kennedy School of Government, where he teaches a graduate seminar on immigration from Latin America into the U.S. and is writing a book on the subject. Schumacher-Matos applies his rich experiences—immigrant, soldier, reporter, editor, publisher, author, ombudsman, professor, academic fellow—to his weekly, syndicated column on national and international affairs. His work has appeared in the influential journal Foreign Affairs, and he has published numerous op-ed articles, which, he says, express the value of human dignity over self-righteousness and realism over wishful thinking. Maquinismo Ibérico es sin duda un título problemático. No es evidente que haya mucho qué decir sobre máquinas en Iberia, una región caracterizada en la mayor parte de los manuales por su retraso tecnológico y por sus dificultades en incorporar los cambios de la revolución industrial. Además, tampoco es obvia la opción de juntar las experiencias española y portuguesa en un mismo libro, cuando la historia nos enseña el triste destino de los afanes iberizantes. Sin embargo, intentaremos defender la pertinencia de semejante esfuerzo y afirmamos, desde ya, nuestra convicción que para hablar de Iberia en el siglo XIX es fundamental incorporar al relato ingenieros y teodolitos, máquinas de vapor y ensanches urbanos, o canales y exposiciones industriales
Zooming into protein oligomerization in neurodegeneration using BiFC
No full text© 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.Several neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the accumulation of misfolded and aggregated proteins, which lead to neurotoxicity. However, the nature of those toxic species is controversial. Developments in optical microscopy and live-cell imaging are essential in providing crucial insight into the molecular mechanisms involved. In particular, the technique of bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) represents a remarkable improvement for observing protein protein interactions within living cells. Unlike other techniques, BiFC provides spatial and temporal resolution and can be carried out in a physiological environment. Among other applications, BiFC has been used to study molecular determinants of oligomerization in neurodegenerative disorders, thereby promising to unveil novel targets for therapeutics. We review the applicability of BiFC for investigating the molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases associated with protein misfolding and aggregation.TFO is supported by an EU Marie Curie IRG and by an EMBO Installation Grant. Nesta edição de Visita à Academia é promovida uma interação entre os Mestrandos de Direito da UE da UMinho e o Juiz Desembargador José Igreja Matos [Presidente Emérito da Associação Internacional de Juízes; Vice-Presidente do Conselho Consultivo dos Juízes Europeus (do Conselho da Europa)], na tentativa de desvendar os meandros da estratégia de sustentabilidade (sobretudo na perspetiva ambiental) que vem sendo desenvolvida pelo Tribunal da Relação do Porto - o que se reflete no tratamento de resíduos, na eliminação do plástico, na produção de energia consumida pelo edifício, etc. -, uma iniciativa pioneira em Portugal que se pretende replicar pela Europa e noutras latitudes. Visit to Academia with Igreja Matos (President of the Court of Appeal of Porto) - Digital and green transition "in action": the example of a sustainable court
In this edition of Visit to Academia, an interaction is promoted between the Master's students of EU Law at UMinho and Judge José Igreja Matos [President Emeritus of the International Association of Judges; Vice-President of the Consultative Council of European Judges (of the Council of Europe)], in an attempt to unveil the intricacies of the sustainability strategy (especially from an environmental perspective) that has been developed by the Court of Appeal of Porto - which is reflected in the treatment of waste, the elimination of plastic, the production of energy consumed by the building, etc. -, a pioneering initiative in Portugal that is intended to be replicated throughout Europe and other latitudes. Verificação do sistema HACCP e serviço de controlo integrado de pragas na empresa Nelson Filipe Correia Matos Melo Simas – Segurança e Qualidade Alimentar Unipessoal, Lda.: Relatório de estágio
No full textEste relatório resulta do estágio curricular para obtenção do grau de mestre em Gestão da Qualidade e Segurança Alimentar, que decorreu na empresa Nelson Filipe Correia Matos Melo Simas – Segurança e Qualidade Alimentar Unipessoal, Lda com a duração de 9 meses, entre 21 de setembro de 2021 e 10 de junho de 2022.
O objetivo deste estágio foi o desenvolvimento de competências essenciais à integração profissional na área da Qualidade e Segurança Alimentar, sendo que para isso se realizou acompanhamentos de verificação do sistema de HACCP em estabelecimentos de restauração, retalho (lojas e armazéns) e indústria (panificadora, pesqueira e de preparação de hortofrutícolas), bem como o serviço de controlo integrado de pragas.
Relativamente ao serviço de verificação do sistema HACCP foi identificado que os estabelecimentos onde foram verificadas o maior número de ocorrências de não-conformidades foram os estabelecimentos de restauração, as lojas de retalho e a indústria panificadora. Sendo que as mais comuns são relacionadas com a higienização de equipamentos, a colocação de identificação de géneros alimentícios, o acondicionamento dos mesmos, a presença de pragas e o preenchimento dos registos. Enquanto em relação ao serviço de controlo integrado de pragas foi verificado que a indústria panificadora requere uma maior atenção para se manter a situação sob controlo.
Verificou-se que o sistema de HACCP apresentou algumas falhas, nomeadamente onde os pré-requisitos não se encontravam firmemente estabelecidos. Principalmente por depender do comportamento humano, uma vez que o papel mais importante para garantir a inocuidade de um género alimentício é o dos operadores dos estabelecimentos do setor alimentar.This report is the result of the curricular internship in order to acquire a master's degree in Quality Management and Food Safety, which took place at the company Nelson Filipe Correia Matos Melo Simas – Segurança e Qualidade Alimentar Unipessoal, Lda over 9 months, between September 21, 2021 and June 10, 2022.
The main objective of this internship was the development of essential skills for professional integration in the area of Quality and Food Safety, and for this purpose, follow-ups were carried out to verify the HACCP system in catering establishments, retail (stores and warehouses) and industry (bakery, fishing and fruit and vegetable preparation), as well as the integrated pest management.
Regarding the verification service of the HACCP system, it was verified that the establishments where the highest number of occurrences of non-conformities were verified were catering establishments, retail stores and the bakery industry. The most common ones are related to the cleaning of equipment, the identification of foodstuffs, their packaging, the presence of pests and filling in the records. While in relation to the integrated pest control service, it was verified that the bakery industry requires greater attention to keep the situation under control.
It was found that the HACCP system has some flaws, namely if the prerequisites are not firmly established. Mainly because it depends on human behavior, since the most important role to guarantee the safety of foodstuffs is the operators of establishments in the food sector
