Entropiebasierte Bewertungskriterien für den Wärmeübergang in Kraftwerksprozessen und ihre Relevanz für praktische Anwendungen

    No full text
All losses occurring during heat transfer result in entropy generation. This work inves-tigates, whether the entropy generation rate or related performance evaluation criteria are helpful for the design and optimization of heat exchangers. For this purpose, a de-tailed plate heat exchanger model has been developed using the programming lan-guage Modelica

Frost/Defrost Models for Air-Source Heat Pumps with Retained Water Refreezing Considered

    No full text
Cyclic frosting and defrosting operations constitute acommon characteristic of air-source heat pumps in coldclimates during winter. Simulation models that can capturesimultaneous heat and mass transfer phenomena associatedwith frost/defrost behaviors and their impact on theoverall heat pump system performance are of criticalimportance to improved controls of heat delivery and frostmitigation. This paper presents a novel frost formulationusing an enthalpy method to systematically capture allphase-change behaviors including frost formation andmelting, retained water refreezing and melting, and waterdrainage during cyclic frosting and defrosting operations.A Fuzzy modeling approach is proposed to smoothly switchsource terms when evaluating the dynamics of frost andwater mediums for numerical robustness. The proposedfrost/defrost model is incorporated into a flat-tubeoutdoor heat exchanger model of an automotive heat pumpsystem model to investigate system responses under cyclicoperations of frosting and reverse-cycle defrosting

Explicit authenticity and stimulus features interact to modulate BOLD response induced by emotional speech

    # The Author(s) 2013. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Context has been found to have a profound effect on the recognition of social stimuli and correlated brain activation. The present study was designed to determine whether knowledge about emotional authenticity influences emotion recognition expressed through speech intonation. Participants classified emotionally expressive speech in an fMRI experimental design as sad, happy, angry, or fearful. For some trials, stimuli were cued as either authentic or play-acted in order to manipulate participant top-down be-lief about authenticity, and these labels were presented both congruently and incongruently to the emotional authenticity of the stimulus. Contrasting authentic versus play-acted stimuli during uncued trials indicated that play-acted stimuli spontaneously up-regulate activity in the auditory cortex and regions associated with emotional speech processing. In addition, a clear interaction effect of cue and stimulus authenticity showed up-regulation in the posterior superior temporal sulcus and the anterior cingulate cortex, indicating that cueing had an impact on the perception of authenticity. In particular, when a cue indicating an authentic stimulus was followed by a play-acted stimulus, additional activation occurred in the temporoparietal junction, probably pointing to increased load on perspective taking in such trials. While actual authenticity has a significant impact on brain activa-tion, individual belief about stimulus authenticity can addi-tionally modulate the brain response to differences in emotionally expressive speech

Ghosts: Perception, Painting, and the Index

How does one form a meaningful, generative understanding of the one’s surroundings in contemporary society? Currently, social media and portable electronics appear to serve widely as methods of filtering and segmenting the world around us into easily consumable portions. What is at stake in this kind of mediation and what role can visual art take in encouraging the formulation of knowledge based on primary, rather than prescribed, modes of perception? This paper examines the potential of primary experience in daily life and the hypothesis that modes of perception normally associated with the appreciation of art can be made use of in the context of daily life. Through using established methods of representation, such as painting, to reframe normally unremarkable entities as valuable art objects, the artwork discussed aims to transfer ways of looking at art into the realm of daily life. This fracturing of perceptual conventions is strengthened through the use of the index as a tool of conceptual expansion, directly connecting art objects with the subjects they represent and the processes with which they were made. Working from the pedagogical theories of Joseph Albers, and Rosalind Krauss’ writing on the index and the flatbed picture plane, this research attempts to lay a pathway for the continuation of an investigation of direct perception as a tool of knowledge production. My research is placed in relation to the work of Gerald Ferguson, Ellsworth Kelly and William Anastasi. In looking at the artwork that I have produced over the course of the Emily Carr University of Art + Design Master of Applied Art program, this document is a record of a variety of attempts to trigger the modification of customary patterns of comprehension and the generation of more intimate understandings of our immediate surroundings

Mass Conservation in Vapor Compression Cycles: A Method for Ensuring Consistency with Redundant Dynamic States

    No full text
This paper describes a method to resolve a potential inconsistency when employing redundant dynamic thermofluid states for modeling of vapor compression cycles. Following a brief introduction regarding the motivation and use of redundant thermofluid states, a series of test models ranging from simple component models to complex system models are developed to illustrate the potential inconsistency with Air Conditioning Library. Based on observations of the simulation results from these test models, a method for ensuring consistency is proposed and implemented. The method is then demonstrated on the test suite and evaluated for effectiveness, robustness, and computational efficiency

A Trace of Africa : Framing Empire in Strindberg's ’The Roofing Ceremony’

During the whole of his writing career August Strindberg was a restless canon-maker. In his capacity as writer, librarian, cultural scholar, polemicist and amateur researcher he constantly quoted sources, both historical and contemporary, included and excluded certain authors in his own work, as well as re-evaluated the boundaries of aesthetics and culture around the turn of the twentieth century. At the same time, he was a very active author in his own right, living in self-imposed exile but in close contact with cosmopolitan intellectual circles. All of this raises questions about his relationship with the literary and cultural canon. The dynamics between local and global culture define the whole of his oeuvre and make him one of those European authors who are readily interpreted in the context of Weltliteratur.Strindberg was a multilingual cosmopolitan, an emigrant, theosophist, and reporter. In his capacity as a writer, with his gaze trained upon both East and West, he absorbed impressions from the universalist tendencies of the fin de siècle. His ambition to join the global “Republic of Letters” led him to study French, Hebrew, the Chinese system of logograms, Russian literature, and the history of the Middle East. This volume, edited by Jan Balbierz, gathers contributions from renowned Strindberg scholars and discusses questions, such as: How did Strindberg construct his predecessors and which traditions did he associate himself with? How is a Strindbergian text altered in performative practice in theatre and film? How did Strindberg, whose writings are deeply rooted in Swedish folklore and landscape, relate to foreign cultural values?</p
