After obtaining her Ph.D. in 1979, she joined the staff as a research assistant 1 in the then-Institute of Polar Studies, now called the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center. She describes the trajectory of her career from research assistant to full professor to her current position as director of the Byrd Center. Mosley-Thompson also discusses gender issues, both in the science field and specifically at OSU, and how these have changed over time
