Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Modellierung der Prozess-Produkt Wirkbeziehungen in der Batteriezellproduktion
The use of batteries in electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems is widely regarded as a promising enabler for sustainable mobility and energy sectors. Although significant progress has been made over the last decade toward higher battery performance and lower production costs, there continues to be considerable potential to be exploited, especially along the battery cell production chain. The presented work provides an innovative approach to understand, quantitatively describe, and improve the complex battery cell production by modeling the process-product interdependencies along the process chain. Initially, the operating principle, different components of battery cells, and the production chain with its heterogeneous process steps and manifold process-product mechanisms are explained and corresponding challenges for battery cells are revealed. Many cause-effect relations along the process chain are not yet fully understood or controlled, which hinders an efficient production with lower scrap rates. Furthermore, quality in production systems and mathematical modeling are introduced to exhibit the current understanding respectively the existing quantitative tools for production improvement. In addition, evaluation criteria are defined, which are used to analyze recent publications in the core research field. The fulfillment of sixteen publications for each evaluation criteria is summarized in a heat map in order to identify open research needs across the research area. A clear description is given for further research in terms of investigating the complex process-product interdependencies along the battery cell process chain with mechanistic models. Consequently, the concept for modeling process-product interdependencies in battery cell production is explained in detail. The model framework based on the underlying process-structure-performance relationship is presented. The model framework comprises three connected modules. First, the process chain model module connects different mechanistic (algebraic and numerical) process models in a generic container platform via the structural parameters of the respective process step to allow a digital representation of the battery cell process chain. Second, the battery cell model module takes the final structural parameters from the process chain model and computes performance properties of the battery cells via a Doyle-Fuller-Newman type model. Third, the analysis methods module provides a detailed description on how to conduct an uncertainty and sensitivity analysis for the process chain model. Furthermore, a method to identify model-based production tolerances is presented that takes into account production cost and revenue as a function of production precision. Finally, the developed concept is prototypically implemented and an exemplary application of the developed framework for modeling process-product interdependencies in battery cell production is presented. Two elaborate use cases are provided to show the potential application fields of the framework. The first use case includes an uncertainty and sensitivity analysis for the cathode production to identify and quantify the impact of process parameter uncertainty on the structural parameter uncertainty and subsequently the final performance property uncertainty. The results show, among other things, that the uncertainty in volumetric energy density is affected but consistently low, while the uncertainty in discharge capacity is strongly correlated with the uncertainty in dry matter loading. The second use case addresses the identification of production tolerances for the coating and calendering process. Combining production cost and cell revenues suggest ideal production tolerances for a scenario which requires a more precise operation during the coating process than calendering and highly skilled operators for the coating process and a regular maintenance schedule. The work ends with a brief summary, a thorough critical review of the presented concept and an extensive outlook for further research.Der Einsatz von Batterien in Elektrofahrzeugen und stationären Energiespeichersystemen wird weithin als vielversprechender Wegbereiter für eine nachhaltige Mobilität und Energiewirtschaft angesehen. Obwohl in den letzten zehn Jahren erhebliche Fortschritte bei der Steigerung der Batterieleistung und der Senkung der Produktionskosten erzielt wurden, gibt es nach wie vor ein erhebliches Potenzial, das es auszuschöpfen gilt, insbesondere entlang der Produktionskette von Batteriezellen. Die vorliegende Arbeit bietet einen innovativen Ansatz zum Verständnis, zur quantitativen Beschreibung und zur Verbesserung der komplexen Batteriezellenproduktion durch Modellierung der Prozess-Produkt-Interdependenzen entlang der Prozesskette. Zunächst werden das Funktionsprinzip, die verschiedenen Komponenten von Batteriezellen sowie die Produktionskette mit ihren heterogenen Prozessschritten und vielfältigen Prozess-Produkt-Mechanismen erläutert und entsprechende Herausforderungen für Batteriezellen aufgezeigt. Viele Ursache-Wirkungs-Zusammenhänge entlang der Prozesskette sind noch nicht vollständig verstanden und beherrscht, was eine effiziente Produktion mit geringeren Ausschussquoten behindert. Des Weiteren werden Qualität in Produktionssystemen und mathematische Modellierung vorgestellt, um das aktuelle Verständnis bzw. die vorhandenen quantitativen Werkzeuge zur Produktionsverbesserung aufzuzeigen. Darüber hinaus werden Bewertungskriterien definiert, anhand derer aktuelle Veröffentlichungen im Kernbereich der Forschung analysiert werden. Die Erfüllung von sechzehn Publikationen für jedes Bewertungskriterium wird in einer Heatmap zusammengefasst, um den offenen Forschungsbedarf im gesamten Forschungsbereich zu identifizieren. Es wird klar beschrieben, dass weitere Forschung notwendig ist, um die komplexen Prozess-Produkt-Interdependenzen entlang der Prozesskette von Batteriezellen mit mechanistischen Modellen zu untersuchen. In der Folge wird das Konzept zur Modellierung von Prozess-Produkt-Interdependenzen in der Batteriezellenproduktion detailliert erläutert. Der Modellrahmen, der auf der zugrundeliegenden Prozess-Struktur-Leistungs-Beziehung basiert, wird vorgestellt. Der Modellrahmen besteht aus drei miteinander verbundenen Modulen. Erstens verbindet das Prozesskettenmodellmodul verschiedene mechanistische (algebraische und numerische) Prozessmodelle in einer generischen Containerplattform über die Strukturparameter des jeweiligen Prozessschrittes, um eine digitale Darstellung der Batteriezellenprozesskette zu ermöglichen. Zweitens übernimmt das Batteriezellenmodellmodul die endgültigen Strukturparameter aus dem Prozesskettenmodell und berechnet die Leistungseigenschaften der Batteriezellen über ein Modell vom Typ Doyle-Fuller-Newman. Drittens bietet das Modul Analysemethoden eine detaillierte Beschreibung, wie eine Unsicherheits- und Sensitivitätsanalyse für das Prozesskettenmodell durchgeführt werden kann. Darüber hinaus wird eine Methode zur Ermittlung modellbasierter Produktionstoleranzen vorgestellt, die Produktionskosten und -erlöse in Abhängigkeit von der Produktionsgenauigkeit berücksichtigt. Schließlich wird das entwickelte Konzept prototypisch implementiert und eine beispielhafte Anwendung des entwickelten Frameworks zur Modellierung von Prozess-Produkt-Interdependenzen in der Batteriezellenproduktion vorgestellt. Zwei ausführliche Anwendungsfälle zeigen die potentiellen Einsatzgebiete des Frameworks. Der erste Anwendungsfall umfasst eine Unsicherheits- und Sensitivitätsanalyse für die Kathodenproduktion, um die Auswirkungen der Prozessparameterunsicherheit auf die strukturelle Parameterunsicherheit und in der Folge die Unsicherheit der endgültigen Leistungseigenschaften zu identifizieren und zu quantifizieren. Die Ergebnisse zeigen unter anderem, dass die Unsicherheit in der volumetrischen Energiedichte beeinflusst wird, aber gleichbleibend gering ist, während die Unsicherheit in der Entladekapazität stark mit der Unsicherheit in der Trockenmassebeladung korreliert ist. Durch die Kombination von Produktionskosten und Zellerträgen werden ideale Produktionstoleranzen für ein Szenario vorgeschlagen, das einen präziseren Betrieb während des Beschichtungsprozesses als beim Kalandrieren sowie hochqualifizierte Bediener für den Beschichtungsprozess und einen regelmäßigen Wartungsplan erfordert. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
