Clara Maffei al cospetto di Verdi. Tra storia e finzione

    No full text
The essay aims at drawing a portrait of Countess Clara Maffei through the pages of her contemporaries and the fictional reconstructions of her life and personality. The lack of documents at our disposal and their fragmentary nature suggest taking into account a diverse corpus of texts, including novels, movies and teleplays dating from mid-Nineteenth century to present time. In these works Clara Maffei is mainly seen as a minor character who is nevertheless essential for the delineation of the intellectual society of her time. Maffei’s portraits are often to be found in biographies of important personalities such as Alessandro Manzoni, Carlo Tenca and Giuseppe Verdi. Her lifelong friendship with Verdi is of high relevance, thanks to the large number of letters written by and to the Italian composer from 1845 to 1886. Thus, in the second part of this essay the author reconstructs the main events regarding the profound and enduring relationship between Verdi and the famous salonnière

Carlo Tenca, la contessa Maffei, il rinnovamento della letteratura

    No full text
The essay follows Carlo Tenca’s intellectual and artistic journey in the light of his relationship with the Countess Maffei and the cultural direction of his important literary salon. Based on his conspicuous epistolary, on the theoretical writings and on various narrative works of the Milanese author, the essay shows how the bond with Clarina, from the second half of the Forties to the unification of Italy, favored his departure from Mazzinian radicalism and the adhesion to the Cavourian and Liberal moderate program expressed by the magazine "Il Crepuscolo"; this political evolution coincided with an artistic turning point for Tenca, who, while not denying Manzoni's authority, sought a more popular literature and, above all, the overcoming of the "historical" tale in a "civil" and "social" direction, tied to contemporary reality

This article deepens the relation between locus amoenus and locus horridus in the representation of space within Manuel Álvarez Ortega’s poetry, as they mirror the signs left by the tragic events of his experience. The idyllic landscape connected with the joyful past that now lives in memories appears more than once, however, the locus horridus representing the apocalyptic vision and reality seems inseparable from it. Both the spaces’ sterility and the symbolic characters that inhabit this unreal world depict an intertextual relationship with T. S. Eliot. It will be proposed a comparative analysis between the Spanish author and Thomas Stearns Eliot through a series of textual examples

Dangerous Liaisons: Relationships between design, craft and art

    No full text
The introductory essay [co-authored] examines the background and current interconnections between design, craft and the fine arts. This Special Issue was able to expand the debate by showing how attitudes to materials – from 19C sculpture to current fashion – appropriate craftsmanship to reinvigorate notions of handmaking

Leopoldo María Panero: una irrupción ante litteram del lenguaje médico en poesía

    No full text
This article explores how the poetic work of Leopoldo María Panero wit- nesses a gradual incursion into poetry of language belonging to the sphere of madness and medicine ante litteram with respect to its definitive irruption in 21st-century poetry. In his poems, recovering the topic of the separation between soul and body, the author claims his lack of identification with the condition of madness that society attaches to him. In this trajectory, an implicit denunciation of the dichotomous sieve by which human beings are measured, i.e. madness or sanity, takes shape. The effects are visible not only in the system of psychiatry, which he witnesses first-hand, but also in society's way of interpreting the human being

Research on the combination of water and membranes as a structural building material

    p. 3024-3033The aim of this paper is to investigate the combination of water and membranes for temporary architectural applications. Water as a construction material, can be useful for three different purposes: first of all, thanks to its thermal mass, it can be used as a medium for cooling down or heating up buildings (Pronk et al [6]); secondly water is uncompressible and, in combination with air, can be used as part of a structural element; thirdly the mass of water could work as a sound barrier so it can be used as sound insulation material (Rodrigues and Coutinho [7]). This paper shows the result of the structural behaviour. There is another paper about sound insulation properties of water. The research in both structural and sound insulation fields was carried out in the laboratories of Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The prototype is a "waterbeam" of 2 m span. Starting from the Tensairity(R) technology principle (Luchsinger et al [8]) developed by Airlight, the purpose of this experiment is to replace the iron struts with a second membrane chamber filled with water. Water works well in compression and air prevents buckling. The result is a rigid structural element made by non-rigid material (water, air, membranes and cables) with a significant reduction of weight and cost of transportation compared to the traditional iron beam but also compared with the Tensairity(R) system. Different bending tests were carried out. In each test, the two chambers of the beam were filled with air or water to understand the material behaviour. The comparison between the results shows that water works slightly better than air (stiffness increase of a range of 8-13% in the elements filled with water). Water application in architecture showed promising results. Further investigation (pure compression tests on columns, multiple layers sound barrier) should be carried out. These results could give architects new design opportunities and solutions concerning temporary buildings and moveable architecture. Moreover the company and building construction industry could develop innovative structural elements and new insulation components.Pronk, A.; Maffei, R.; Martin, H. (2009). Nitric oxide mechanisms of nebivolol

β-blockers are among the most widely used drugs in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, although they are associated with increased peripheral resistance. Third-generation β-blockers avoid this adverse effect by inducing vasodilation through different mechanisms. In particular, nebivolol, a highly selective blocker of β1-adrenergic receptors, is the only β-blocker known to induce vascular production of nitric oxide, the main endothelial vasodilator. The specific mechanism of nebivolol is particularly relevant in hypertension, where nitric oxide dysfunction occurs. Indeed, nebivolol is able to reverse endothelial dysfunction. Nebivolol induces nitric oxide production via activation of β3-adrenergic receptors, which can explain the good metabolic profile observed after treatment with this drug. Moreover, nebivolol can also stimulate the β3-adrenergic receptor-mediated production of nitric oxide in the heart, and this stimulation can result in a greater protection against heart failure. In conclusion, nebivolol has a unique profile among antihypertensive drugs, adding to a very high selectivity against β1 adrenergic receptors, and an agonist action on β3 receptors and nitric oxide (NO), which has led to clinically significant improvements in hypertensive patients. © The Author(s), 2009
