and made constant efforts to obtain social distinction, as is demonstrated by the contracts he drew up. Loyal to each new regime, a son of the Enlightenment, Bonnet had little to do with the common man's world which was so different from his ideal of the family and from his way of life as a local worthy. The author carefully follows the dialectics of individual choice and social determination within a particularly significant case study. Castaing Thomas. Some properties of set-valued stochastic integrals of multiprocesses with finite Castaing representations

    No full text
The paper contains new properties of set-valued stochastic integrals defined as multifunctions with subtrajectory integrals equal to closed decomposable hulls of functional set-valued integrals defined in the author paper [8]. In particular, it is proved that such defined integrals for set-valued predictable square integrably bounded processes having finite Castaing representations are square integrably bounded. Up to now this property has not been proved. Unfortunately, in the general case the above boundedness problem is still open

Local heat flux measurements using a micro-machined integrated probe

    No full text
Thermal flows are ubiquitous in natural and industrial systems, this is why they have been studied for decades. In these kinds of flows, an important quantity is the local heat flux, but it remains experimentally nearly unstudied since it is difficult to measure it. We introduce a new local convective heat flux probe, based on a joint measurement of temperature and velocity within the flow

The Castaing microprobe has been equipped with a scanning device, which allows images of the distribution of a given element to be displayed with help of its characteristic X emission. It has been also utilized to obtain an " electron image " depending on the differences in atomic number and in the target relief. Electron bombardment by the probe gives rise to a local emission of backscattered and secondary electrons. By grounding the specimen through a large resistor, a voltage proportionnal to 1— δ is generated. δ is the yield of the local electron emission, the conditions of which have been discussed elsewhere [5]. After amplification this voltage modulates the beam of a C. R. Tube. In the best case, the smallest detectable variation is as low as 20 μV, corresponding to a variation of the target atomic number Δ Z of about 1/10. A few examples are briefly described in order to show the applications of this technique.

Refractive Index and Strain Modulation Tailor the Afterglow of Nanocomposite Films

Tailoring the unique delayed and long-lasting luminescence of persistent phosphors is crucial for their application in anticounterfeiting, data storage, imaging displays, and AC-driven lighting. We introduce a novel strategy to achieve this by modifying the refractive index of persistent phosphor transparent coatings. Specifically, we developed ZnGa2O4:Cr3+/SiO2 nanocomposite films with tunable refractive indices from 1.45 to 1.7. This tunability allowed us to precisely control the Cr3+ radiative decay rate, resulting in a substantial 1.7-fold increase in both luminescence and afterglow brightness. Furthermore, our approach uniquely influences the intrinsic charging rate of the phosphor, a mechanism attributed to the strain induced on the ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ nanocrystals by the presence of SiO2. This work demonstrates an unprecedent ability to manipulate the afterglow kinetics without altering the material composition, opening new avenues for designing and optimizing persistent luminescence materials. We thank Bruno Viana and Juan R. Financial Market Analysis Can Go Mad (in the search for irrational behaviour during the South Sea Bubble)

    No full text
An investigation into the legal and political history of South Sea Company subscription finance shows that the subscription contracts had default options built into them, as was typically the case in eighteenth-century subscription financing. Company records and contemporary pamphlet literature show that people understood the subscription finance mechanics that were stated in law. A fair presentation of South Sea share value data also supports this view. We thus conclude that the analyses published in this Review by Dale, Johnson and Tang were irretrievably flawed and present a substantially incorrect history of the markets for South Sea shares.South Sea Company, Royal African Company, Financial Revolution, Bubble Act, subscription shares, options markets.

On Carathéodory type selectors in a Hilbert space

    No full text
In this paper we consider a set-valued function of two variables, measurable in the first and continuous in the second variable. Using metric projections we construct for this function a family of selectors which are Carathéodory maps. The existence of Carathéodory selectors was studied by Castaing [2], [3], Cellina [4], Fryszkowski [9] and the first author [11]
