Helge S. Kragh, Conceptions of Cosmos [Book Review]
Helge S. Kragh, historian of science and prolific author of books (and a member of the editorial board
of this journal), has given us nothing less than a thorough history of cosmology, from biblical myths to
the present view of accelerated expansion. It’s a noble thing to try, and even if it isn’t always perfectly
accurate, Conceptions of Cosmos makes a real contribution to the literature
I remember life as an Estonian at Seabrook
In this "I remember" memoir, Helge Kangur recalls her Estonian upbringing at Seabrook. She realizes now how fortunate she was to grow up in such a diverse community. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms
Accelerator based Production of Auger-Electron-emitting Isotopes for Radionuclide Therapy
In this research project the focus has been on the identification and production of new, unconventional Augerelectron- emitting isotopes for targeted radionuclide therapy of cancer. Based on 1st principles dosimetry calculations on the subcellular level, the Augeremitter 119Sb has been identified as a potent candidate for therapy. The corresponding imaging analogue 117Sb has been shown from planar scintigraphy and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to be suitable for SPECT-based dosimetry of a future Sb-labeled radiopharmaceutical. The production method of these radioisotopes has been developed using a low-energy cyclotron via the nuclear reactions 119Sn(p,n)119Sb and 117Sn(p,n)117Sb including measurements of the excitation function for the former reaction. Moreover, a new high-yield radiochemical separation method has been developed to allow the subsequent separation of the produced 119Sb from the enriched 119Sn target material with high radionuclidic- and chemical purity. A method that also allows efficient recovery of the 119Sn for recycling. To demonstrate the ability of producing therapeutic quantities of 119Sb and other radioisotopes for therapy with a low-energy cyclotron, two new ”High Power” cyclotron targets were developed in this study. The target development was primarily based on theoretical thermal modeling calculations using finiteelement- analysis software. With these targets, I have shown that it will be possible to produce several tens of GBq of therapeutics isotopes (e.g. 119Sb or 64Cu) using the PETtrace cyclotron commonly found at the larger PET-centers in the hospitals. Finally, research in a new method to measure the radiotoxicity of Auger-emitters invitro using cellular microinjection has been carried out. The purpose of this method is to be able to experimentally evaluate and compare the potency of the new and unconventional Auger-emitters (e.g. 119Sb). However, due to experimental complications, the development of this method is still ongoing research. Still, preliminary results of the survival curve for the Auger-emitter 111In injected into the nuclei of HeLa cancer cells have been obtained
Renaissancen og middelalderen som periodiseringsbegreber:et essay
The essay discusses the traditional and the occasionally exaggerated use of periodisations in general historical studies. The terms 'the Middle Ages' and 'the Renaissance' have had very long and complicated histories of their own. Of the two terms "the Middle Ages", which was originally a pejorative expression, has appeared to be the strongest of the two, whereas the term 'the Renaissance' has had a much more chaotic history in historiography. During the last 150 years of historical writing and thinking it has gone from the highest success (due to Burchardt 1861) to the deepest downfall (around 1930). The author argues for the preservation of the term 'the Renaissance' for three reasons: (1) The period of the Renaissance coincides with the emergence of the modern, strong power state (from the 14th and 15th centuries onwards) in contrast to the medieval, decentralized, feudal political system, (2) the break-through of the secularisation of science, the humanities, culture and art (during the 15th and 16th centuries), and not in the least (3) the new consciousness of history (the here and now concept!), which arose in Italy in the 15th century, and which broke the millennial, traditional Christian explanation of the course of history

Kirsti Aasen: Alle mine kilder
Kirsti Aasen: A ll M y Springs. Gyldendal Norsk Forlag, Oslo 1986.Reviewed by Helge Baden NielsenThe title of the book are the first words of one of Grundtvig’s hymns. The reviewer sees this essay collection by a Norwegian woman minister first and foremost as an expression of the new interest in Grundtvig in Norway, as was proved by the establishment in 1983 of a special Norwegian branch of the Grundtvig Society. According to Kirsti Aasen this takes its origin in the liberation, under Grundtvig’s inspiration, from the pietistic view of Christianity in Norway. In her own case she discovered that Christianity could easily be combined with love of the Norwegian countryside and the life of the people. The author was born in .sterdalen, studied theology at Oslo University, and is now rector of a parish in Oslo

The Rise and Development of Contemporary European Big Band Writing: An Analysis of Composers Peter Herbolzheimer, George Gruntz, Kenny Wheeler, Helge Sunde, and Florian Ross
It has been argued that a distinctive European big band sound began to emerge in the second half of the 20th century and has continued to develop over the following decades. As of this writing, however, only one book – in German – attempts to address the idea of a contemporary European big band approach, and no known publications are extant in the English language that specifically analyze works solely of contemporary European big band composers. With this in mind, this essay explores the music, compositions, and arranging styles of the following influential contemporary European composers: Peter Herbolzheimer, George Gruntz, Kenny Wheeler, Helge Sunde, and Florian Ross. The author identifies specific techniques, compositional trends, and influences that make these writers unique to the European continent. These findings are then applied in the creation of three extended jazz compositions totaling approximately 35 minutes in length and the author enumerates how these techniques and concepts were incorporated.</p
Medium to large scale radioisotope production for targeted radiotherapy using a small PET cyclotron
In recent years the use of radionuclides in targeted cancer therapy has increased. In this study we have developed a high-current solid target system and demonstrated that by the use of a typical low-energy medical cyclotron, it is possible to produce tens of GBq's of many unconventional radionuclides relevant for cancer therapy such as 64Cu and 119Sb locally at the hospitals
