    Post 9/11 combat veterans in agriculture: Healing, peace, and purpose

    Many veterans suffer from depression, and symptoms of PTSD and some cannot do daily tasks without the help of others or machinery. There is a group of Post 9/11 Combat Veterans who have found agriculture provides them with therapeutic benefits as well as being a way to earn income. Luckily, some coalitions have formed to provide support and unity for these veterans. One problem is agriculture is not traditionally a kind of therapy. Also, farming is a hard business to start without capital. The benefits of both need to be researched more to provide funding and programs for veterans. Research of post 9-11 combat veterans within the agriculture field is slim. The Veteran's Administration (VHA) has conducted some surveys on the subject, but not much in-depth research has happened. The research for this study looks into readjustment. Studies exist about the benefits of animals and horticulture on people in general concerning dogs, cats, horses, and gardening. The research in this study looks directly at how agriculture can help post 9-11 combat veterans. Extension and other rural programs should form for this group. Also, groups of veterans participating in the agricultural sector will increase. Job creation is an important benefit of this study. The study conducts through veterans completing a health questionnaire, wearing a heart monitor and keeping a journal of their activities.     Does agriculture education affect college readiness?

    This study focuses on the different areas that affect college readiness during student’s high school experience. This includes, but is not limited to, socioeconomic status, percent of students enrolled in agriculture classes, teacher quality and retention, and school resources. The data will be collected by reviewing previous studies on the above factors. After the factors are determined, the statistics will be collected from the Illinois Report Card website and the Illinois Agriculture Education website. This study is expected to find that in schools in which agriculture education is present, college readiness statistics were higher.     Examining Illinois 4-H member youth fair participation

    Traditionally the 4-H Youth Development Program provides a mastery component for 4-H Members through a 4-H Fair where they can display their projects through evaluation and competition. The 4-H Fair is a deep-rooted tradition that consumes many resources including 4-H Staff time and energy (Arnold, Meinhold, Skubinna, & Ashton, 2007). The purpose of this study is to identify 4-H Member’s motivation as well as factors that hinder their participation in the 4-H Fair. This study was promoted to Illinois 4-H Members ages 12-18, although there are a few members that are outliers being younger than 12 and older than 18. Due to limited time and resources available to collect information for this survey, this study is lacking to encompass information from all Illinois 4-H Members that range from ages 8-18.     Determining agriculture students' motivations for choosing a college

    This is a descriptive-correlational study of the motivations in the college choice process of high school juniors and seniors enrolled in agriculture classes at three central Illinois schools. A total of 78 students were given surveys out of a total sample size of 81 potential participants. The results showed that students who plan to continue their education in agriculture have parents with some level of college education, and value financial aid highly have opinions which differ statistically from those students who do not meet the previous criteria. Implications for high school guidance counselors and college recruiters and recommendations for practice and further research related to college choice are provided.     FFA membership growth compared to a changing and growing student population

    This study compares National FFA membership growth to the growth of the overall student population (percentage growth change, PGC) by state and region from 1990 to 2014 using data provided by the National FFA Organization and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Using Ragin’s (1987) method of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA), student population growth and demographic changes in student race/ethnicity, locale, and free and reduced-price lunch were compared to FFA membership growth by state and region. The QCA method was also used to measure the effects of the National FFA Organization’s affiliation program. The Central Region had the largest increase in FFA membership PGC while the Southern Region had negative FFA membership PGC. Only 6% of states have both high student population growth and high FFA membership measured as a percentage of the student population. Of the states with higher FFA membership percentages, 74% also had larger White student populations, and 89% have larger rural or town student populations.     Assessing career development event placement frequencies to explore evaluation and equity in agricultural education

    Each fall hundreds of students compete in Career Development Events (CDEs) at the National Future Farmers of America (FFA) annual convention. This study assesses trends in placement at National FFA CDE competitions and develops a parameter by which to monitor and compare success rates across states. Additionally, this study reports achievement trends by state and region to evaluate competition equity and discuss implications for diversity in agricultural education and optimizing administrative processes for CDE programming. Using census data from national FFA archives, we identify states that hold disproportionately high and low accumulations of National FFA CDE placements, first through tenth. Each state receives a raw score and a relative achievement score (RAS). Raw scores are a weighted summation of the total number of competitions won throughout seven year time span this study covers. A relative achievement score (RAS) is calculated for each state by normalizing state placements with respect to its population representation in the FFA organization (proportion of placements/ proportion of national membership). Within the seven year span of 2009 and 2015, Texas, California, Missouri have the highest raw accumulation of successes at National FFA CDE competitions. When raw accumulations are converted to RAS Virginia, Connecticut, and Missouri have a much higher rate of success than the calculated expected achievement score. Both measures are an indication of advantages and disadvantages in systems of administration for student competitors. This study investigates factors that contribute to achievement in each state such as geographic location, rural population, and agricultural production. South Dakota and Colorado are consistently in the lowest RAS and Raw rankings. Based on our findings we recommend that CDE schedules mimic that of high scoring states.     The purpose of this summative content analysis was to examine and interpret components of agricultural education curriculum through a multicultural lens.     What do I want to be when I grow up? Exploring influencing factors on high school students’ agricultural career considerations

    The U.S. workforce of today lacks qualified persons to fill the growing number of available jobs in agricultural fields. To address this problem, this study sought to examine the factors which contribute to a high school student’s career considerations. A survey of 817 high school agriculture students in Illinois supplied data for the study. Researchers then evaluated the data through a series of hierarchical logistic regression analyses. The trends in the data coupled with a review of previous work, provides insights to enable educators and agricultural advocates to build action-oriented solutions to place qualified persons in agricultural roles.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
