Turbulent flows driven by the libration of an ellipsoidal container

    No full text
We present a combination of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations modelling a geophysically relevant mechanical forcing: libration. Longitudinal libration corresponds to the periodic oscillation of a body's rotation and is, along with precessional and tidal forcings, a possible source of turbulence in the fluid interior of satellites and planets. In this study, we investigate the fluid motions inside a librating tri-axial ellipsoidal container filled with an incompressible fluid. The turbulent flow is driven by the elliptic instability which is a triadic resonance between two inertial modes and the base flow with elliptical streamlines. This is called the libration driven elliptical instability (LDEI). We characterize the transition to turbulence as triadic resonances develop while also investigating the properties of the turbulent flow that displays both intermittent or sustained regimes. The existence of such intense flows may play an important in understanding the thermal and magnetic evolution of bodies subject to mechanical forcing, which is not considered in standard models of convectively-driven magnetic field generation

    »Tri ali štiri maksime...«

    No full text
In the Discours de la Méthode Descartes mentions three or four maxims of his temporary morals. How to understand this indetermination? The author, after sketching two interpretations of this locus (F. Alquié and J.-M. Beyssade), attempts an analysis of the first maxim, which shows its internal bifurcation. It's actually composed of two promises. After the initial promise to external authorities, which is sometimes seen as the entire first maxim there appears an often unseen or underestimated second one, according to which it's not appropriate to make promises concerning matters, that are subject to changeable judgements. Between the promise of loyalty to external authorities and the freedom of rational researches arises a tension difficult to surmount. The author is pledging for the priority of the promise made to himself, which is the only one to provide an adequate basis for the wanted freedom of scientific research, and is from this point of view the fundamental maxim of Descartes's morals. The so called fourth maxim only reformulates and develops it in a »safe« distance from the opposition of the strategically declarative beginning of the first. Kako razumeti to nedoločnost?

Using the Bayesian Shtarkov solution for predictions

    No full text
AbstractThe Bayes Shtarkov predictor can be defined and used for a variety of data sets that are exceedingly hard if not impossible to model in any detailed fashion. Indeed, this is the setting in which the derivation of the Shtarkov solution is most compelling. The computations show that anytime the numerical approximation to the Shtarkov solution is ‘reasonable’, it is better in terms of predictive error than a variety of other general predictive procedures. These include two forms of additive model as well as bagging or stacking with support vector machines, Nadaraya–Watson estimators, or draws from a Gaussian Process Prior

Influence of author\u27s birthplace on setting of novels

Upoštevala sem oznake roman v Cobissu, vendar ob upoštevanju, da so oznake tam velikokrat napačne, zato sem za prvi kriterij, ali je delo res roma, upoštevala avtorjevo oznako v podnaslovu.I will get down to question in a dissertation, if birthplace of an author influences this, where an author puts activity in his novel. I helped myself with the book of 100 slovenskih pripovednikov and web portal Geopedija at selection of authors. Because I wanted writers from different parts of Slovenia, I chose three random representatives from every region·. I distributed authors round statistical regions of Slovenia and read through all their novels. I found only one or two author at the Zasavje and Posavje region. I limited myself only to novels, as entire opera of all authors would be too extensive for my research. Complied with am mark the novel in Cobiss, however bearing in mind, that marks are wrong there several times, I am for first criterion therefore, is it work of really frame, complied with author\u27s mark in subtitle

Author Addendum Conundrum: Comparing Author Use of Copyright Addenda With Publisher Acceptance

    No full text
The purpose of this paper is simultaneously to investigate researcher use and awareness of author addenda (e.g., the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition [SPARC] author addendum) and publisher awareness and acceptance of the same. Researchers at U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities institutions were targeted, and a survey was sent to faculty, graduate, and postdoctoral associations to share with their members. Following a low response rate, the survey was sent to a listserv of copyright librarians in Canada with a message that encouraged them to share it with researchers at their institutions. Eighty-one researchers responded to the survey. Eighty-six percent of researchers (n = 70) indicated that they were unaware of author addenda. Researchers were asked to identify how often they negotiate their publishing agreements, and of those who answered the question, 84.2% (n = 64) responded that they never negotiate. Thirteen publishers or publishing organizations were contacted and asked if they would participate in phone interviews about copyright practices and author addenda. Two large multinational publishers agreed to participate. Both publishers indicated that very few authors attempt to negotiate their agreements and that of those who choose to negotiate, even fewer use addenda. Both indicated that they do not accept the SPARC author addendum. This study’s small sample sizes mean that more information needs to be collected before firm conclusions can be drawn. Based on the responses from the two large publishers, the best way to help Tri-Agency-funded researchers may be for libraries and the Tri-Agency to negotiate with publishers for funder-based exceptions.L’objectif de cet article est d’étudier simultanément l’utilisation et la connaissance des addenda de l’auteur (par exemple, l’addenda de l’auteur de la Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition [SPARC]) et la connaissance et la réception de ceux-ci auprès des maisons d’édition.

CHARACTERIZATION AND ADSORPTION CAPACITY OF AMINE-SIO2 MATERIAL FOR NITRATE AND PHOSPHATE REMOVAL

    No full text
Amine-SiO2 material was synthesized and applied as a novel adsorbent for nitrate and phosphate removal from aqueous solution. The characterization of Amine-SiO2 were done by using TGA, FTIR, BET, and SEM analyses. Results showed that Amine-SiO2 had higher nitrate and phosphate adsorption capacity of 1.14 and 4.16 times, respectively, than commercial anion exchange resin (Akualite A420). In addition, Amine-SiO2 also had good durability with stable performance after at least 10 regeneration times, indicating that this material is very promising for commercialization in the future as an adsorbent for water treatment

Preparation, Characterization, and Application of Novel Ferric Oxide-Amine Material for Removal of Nitrate and Phosphate in Water

    No full text
Ferric oxide-amine material was synthesized and applied as a novel adsorbent for nitrate and phosphate removal from aqueous solution. The properties of ferric oxide-amine were examined using TGA, FTIR, BET, SEM, EDX, SEM-mapping, and XRD analysis. The results showed that the adsorption using ferric oxide-amine material reached equilibrium after 30 and 60 min for nitrate and phosphate, respectively. The highest nitrate and phosphate adsorption capacities were 131.4 mg nitrate/g at pH 5-6 and 42.1 mg phosphate/g at pH 6. The effects of adsorbent dosage, initial concentrations of nitrate and phosphate, and adsorption temperature were also investigated. Among the three adsorbents of ferric oxide-amine, ferric oxide, and Akualite A420 ion exchange resin, ferric oxide-amine material had the highest adsorption capacity for nitrate and phosphate removal. These results suggest a great potential use of ferric oxide-amine material for water treatment in practical applications
