The Maifinito phenomenon. Confession, Forgiveness, and Healing: “condoni” and“sanatoria”, Isabella Fera in Conversation with Arno Brandlhuber
The book Maifinito featured essays, projects, and a selection of “international artistic, social and architectural experiences,” all of which centered around the “fenomeno del maifinito,”1 the maifinito phenomenon—in other words, the enormous number of unfinished buildings in southern Italy, and especially on the island of Sicily. Many of these buildings, so-called maifiniti, have been constructed entirely outside the
legislative framework—a phenomenon that perfectly encapsulates the relationship in Italy between construction, the public vs. private realm, the state, and legislation. In December 2015, Arno Brandlhuber met Isabella Fera in Palermo for a wide-ranging discussion
The maieutics of the city
The city as a paradigm of contemporary operation belongs to those hypotheses and theories of architectural composition which find in the comparison of the study of urban places the vital lymph to be able to operate by moving coherently within a territory in continuous evolution, but nevertheless with unstable balances. In general terms it can be noted that the nature of the contemporary European or Western city has been characterized as a place where the relationship between invention and tradition has historically expressed itself in overlapping and merging into complex forms of urban settlements, giving rise to progressive and unprecedented constructive inventions and spatial sequences, albeit sometimes contradictory. The in-depth study of the multiple structures and of what can be considered the founding and driving contexts of the innumerable and distinct settlement forms can help us understand what the reasons are that have determined a specific idea of the city and the
its meanings. In particular, focusing on the meaning of the architectural project in the construction of the city, as determined by the collective will that generated it, can perhaps make us reflect on the civil value and therefore on the relevance of making architecture. The research attempt, through the project, should bring back to the center of the reflection on the contemporary city an idea of civil architecture as a tool of priority investigation on the overall reality of the city, be it urban or territorial, as a continuous commitment to the logical construction of the relationships between humankind and surrounding reality.
Searching today - also and above all through the discipline's own tools - the reasons that have given rise to precise urban devices or dialectical relationships between the parts of the built environment, means proposing a reconceptualization of the balanced nature of the experience of architecture, capable of give answers to the needs of living that not only fulfill the strictly functional data capable of restoring a meaning and an identity to our places of living. The reasoning regarding the quality of the urban and rural landscape established over the centuries therefore requires a detailed study, case by case, which concretely evaluates the issues of their architectural constitution and the spatial relationships that derive from it. The objective should be to evaluate their possible operational relevance thanks to the sense those particular places have managed to build over time. The search for the shareability of architecture presupposes that it is a language shared by all, or rather this was the case and perhaps this should still be the case in the design of new urban hypotheses, under penalty of losing meaning. On the contrary, it can be observed, for example
typological disorientation of the contemporary city, due to the multiple possibilities of construction, aggregation and use of the most disparate materials, how the general objective of an awareness of architecture as a collective phenomenon has been lost sight of and how the commercial aspect more often prevails rather than meaning. The study of ancient cities, but not only those, therefore becomes a fundamental tool for rooting new urban hypotheses within a logical process aimed at allowing solutions that can universally correspond to real and objective needs which precisely because they are clearly defined in the conceptual and spatial contours allow the formation of unexpected and therefore particular, subjective or occasional actions
Risks prioritization in decision making for wind energy investments using analytic network process (ANP)
The wind energy production grew up in the last years rapidly. In fact, the project management of these kind of initiatives has found, only recently, some practical references about the time, cost and quality management, stating some reference values (Fera, Macchiaroli, and Miranda, Project management for small wind turbines: An experimental survey on activities, lead times and risks, 2011) (Fera, Iannone, Macchiarli, and Miranda, 2012) (Fera, Iannone, Macchiaroli, Miranda, and Schiraldi, Project appraisal for small and medium size wind energy installation: the Italian energy policy effects, 2014). In these years a research question arose about the risks classification and prioritization of the different phases of wind energy initiatives. Aim of this paper is to present a classification and a prioritization of the risks during a project of installation for a wind energy initiative using the ANP

Modern Architecture goes on Holiday, The Lidi di Mortelle in Sicily, a small linear city by the sea
Sea resorts bring to the extreme the modern architecture restoration themes, due to the difficulty of preserving buildings which were never meant to last, and are particularly exposed both to harsh climatic conditions and to changes in social habits. The interest of this study lies in the possible demonstration that this holiday architecture typology, so fragile and recent, often regarded as secondary if compared to the ‘serious’ building types, should be the object of research and preservation as a privileged field of experimentalism for modern architecture

Mario Labò wrote extensively about architecture and art, and his essays are fundamental for understanding the Genoese built environment, true treasures for reading the local historical heritage, but not only that. The register of his intellectual elaboration is particularly rich, so much so that the figure of the militant intellectual has predominated in criticism over that of the architect. However, little or nothing has remained, or at least up to this point has been found, written by him about his own architecture. Only brief references and dry comments in occasional correspondence. It should be remembered that the archive of his activity as an architect, that is, the professional fund, has largely been lost, dismembered when not sent to the shredder by his wife the day after his death.
The silence of the time and today on his current architectural elaboration is perhaps confirmation of the little fortune that these compositions have enjoyed. However, here we want to advance a research hypothesis that tries to highlight the importance and the peculiarity of this corpus of buildings constructed in their relationship with the contemporary culture of the making of architecture and the city. Projects lucidly informed by a precise compositional will and fully coherent with the reading made by Labò on Genoese architecture and contemporary architecture. They are architectures not frequented by critics and little studied, that live under everyone's eyes, but that on the contrary design with grace and discretion the urban scenography of some places in the ancient center. The essay proposes a critical reading as the first research contribution on his architectural production of intervention in the ancient
THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN MATERNAL CHARACTERISTICS AND COMPLETENESS OF BASIC IMMUNIZATION SERIES AMONG TODDLERS IN KOTA AND JAMBULA PUBLIC HEALTH CENTERS IN TERNATE
Background: Immunization is the process of developing immunity towards against infectious diseases through vaccination. In 2019, the highest and lowest complete basic immunization coverage were achieved in Jambula (100%) and Kota (89%) public health centers, respectively. Maternal characteristics are considered to play role in basic immunization coverage among toddlers. Purpose: To identify the association between maternal characteristics and completeness of basic immunization among toddlers in the Kota and Jambula public health centers, Ternate. Method: Using purposive sampling, this analytical observational study was conducted in the Kota and Jambula public health centers, Ternate, in 2021. Results: From 192 samples, statistically significant associations were identified between maternal education, knowledge, and attitudes, with the completeness of basic immunizations (p<0,05). No significant associations were detected with maternal age and maternal work. Conclusions: Maternal education, knowledge, and attitudes may affect the completeness of basic immunizations among toddlers. The need for sound programs and parental education regarding complete basic immunizations among toddlers might be crucial. Keywords: immunization, maternal characteristics, Kota Public Health Center, Jambula Public Health Cente
A new perspective for production process analysis using additive manufacturing - complexity vs production volume
Since the early days of industrial manufacturing, decisions like the analysis of economic or financial break even and the determination of optimal production level and similar problems were taken using the number of parts as the main decision driver. While in the last years the manufacturing community was simply observing the evolutions of the additive manufacturing (AM) technology, nowadays it is changing its perspective to be a player of this revolution. Since AM has become feasible and applicable to the industrial manufacturing, as reported in Fera et al. (Cogent Eng 3(1):1261503, 2016) and Costabile et al. (Int J Ind Eng Comput 8(2):263â282, 2017), the industrial world is now calling for innovative methods for the integration of this new technology operations management in traditional production systems. The aim of this paper is to present a novel approach to classify and analyze the production of specific products using AM or subtractive manufacturing (SM), using complexity as a decision driver and not the number of products to manufacture. The effectiveness of the method is tested on a data set built for this scope
