    Angry in america: Psychophysiological responses to unfair treatment

    Background African Americans have the highest rates of hypertension-related disease of any ethnic group in the USA. Importantly, racism and discrimination have been linked to these higher rates of morbidity and mortality. Discrimination is deleterious not only to those that are the recipients of this unfair treatment but also to the partners and family members of those affected as well to those that perpetrate this bias. Purpose In this paper, we identify a unique pattern of physiological response to unfair treatment, we have called the "cardiovascular conundrum."This pattern is characterized by greater heart rate variability and greater total peripheral resistance in African Americans compared to their European American counterparts. Methods and Results We review the evidence supporting the existence of this pattern and propose several physiological and psychological factors that might underpin it. We also propose a number of factors that might help to mitigate the deleterious effects associated with it. Conclusions Whereas the context of the current review is on Black/White disparities the framework we propose may be relevant to others exposed to unfair treatment. Ultimately, the systemic factors that perpetuate these inequalities will require that we first acknowledge and then face the challenges they present if we are to address the wealth and health disparities in our country

Second, it satisfies the Federal Clean Water Act requirement to develop a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for impaired waterbodies. Third, it provides a foundation for locally-driven watershed and water quality improvement efforts. Finally, it may be useful for obtaining financial assistance to implement projects to remove Thayer Lake from the federal 303(d) list of impaired waters

    Numerical analysis of a 3-D printed porous trailing edge for broadband noise reduction

    Lattice Boltzmann simulations were carried out to investigate the noise mitigation mechanisms of a 3-D printed porous trailing-edge insert, elucidating the link between noise reduction and material permeability. The porous insert is based on a unit cell resembling a lattice of diamond atoms. It replaces the last 20 % chord of a NACA 0018 at zero angle-of-attack. A partially blocked insert is considered by adding a solid partition between 84 % and 96 % of the aerofoil chord. The regular porous insert achieves a substantial noise reduction at low frequencies, although a slight noise increase is found at high frequencies. The partially blocked porous insert exhibits a lower noise reduction level, but the noise emission at mid-to-high frequency is slightly affected. The segment of the porous insert near the tip plays a dominant role in promoting noise mitigation, whereas the solid-porous junction contributes, in addition to the rough surface, towards the high-frequency excess noise. The current study demonstrates the existence of an entrance length associated with the porous material geometry, which is linked to the pressure release process that is responsible for promoting noise mitigation. This process is characterised by the aerodynamic interaction between pressure fluctuations across the porous medium, which is found at locations where the porous insert thickness is less than twice the entrance length. Present results also suggest that the noise attenuation level is related to both the chordwise extent of the porous insert and the streamwise turbulent length scale.     Surgical services optimization: first case starts and turnover time

    Operating room (OR) efficiencies are vital to the financial success of the hospital. Due to the negative outlook for hospital reimbursements and the rising costs of delivering care, it is important for hospitals to optimize OR efficiency for decreased costs and increased revenues. On-time first case starts (FCS) and turnover time (TOT) are two metrics that set the stage for other OR efficiencies to follow. The case of a community hospital is applied to four successful OR efficiency programs for opportunities for improvement. Opportunities to decrease OR costs and optimize surgical services metrics will thereby increase the OR capacity and revenue generating ability. OR efficiency is significant to the field of public health because optimization of efficiency contributes to the hospital's financial success and long-term viability in serving the community's needs

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

    Electron Spin Relaxation Measurements on the Blue--Copper Protein Plastocyanin: Deviation from a Power Law Temperature Dependence

    Electron spin relaxation rates over the temperatue range 1.41–15.6 K are presented for the copper-containing protein plastocyanin. Measurements are described for two samples, each derived from a different preparation of equivalent purity, for which the ionic, redox, and protein compositions varied slightly. X-band data are analyzed in terms of a phonon-limited direct process and a Raman relaxation process, where the index of the Raman transport integral is treated as a fitting parameter. Both samples yield rate data at the highest temperatures that are characterized by small deviations from a simple Tn power law dependence, with n in the range 4.8–5.2. These deviations are most easily quantified when the Tn power law fits are compared with similar functions that allow for a finite cutoff in the phonon density of states corresponding to Debye temperatures between 90 and 100 K with n in the range 5.0–5.5
