La testa colossale n. 52, Inv. 5137, al Cortile della Pigna del Museo Chiaramonti in Vaticano, finora considerata per gran parte moderna, deve ritenersi invece antica con marginali integrazioni ottocentesche. L'esame della pettinatura rivela due diverse acconciature : la prima da riferire allo schema del ritratto tipico di Alessandro Magno e databile in età tardo-ellenistica ; la seconda interpretabile invece secondo il ritratto di Augusto e che dovette intervenire sull'acconciatura originaria in età claudia. La ricostruzione iconografica riceve conferma entro una più ampia ricostruzione storica : appare infatti sostenibile l'ipotesi che la testa del Vaticano potesse far parte del colosso alloggiato nel foro di Augusto. In questo senso e nell'ambito delle vicende dell'imitatio Alexandri a Roma, acquista particolare rilievo la notizia pliniana di una rielabo-
(v. retro) razione in Augusto dei ritratti su pinakes conservati nell'«aula del colosso » e raffiguranti in origine Alessandro : un preciso parallelo delle vicende iconografiche del colosso del Cortile della Pigna che qui si è tentato di ricostruire.Menichetti Mauro.
