Electronic redacted version excludes material for which permission has not been granted by the rights holderThis thesis seeks to interpret the cinematic representations of Hong Kongers’ identity quest during a transitional state/stage related to the sovereignty transfer. The Handover transition considered is an ideological one, rather than the overnight polity change on the Handover day. This research approaches contemporary Hong Kong cinema on two fronts and the thesis is structured accordingly: Upon an initial review of the existing Hong Kong film scholarship in the Introduction, and its 1997-related allegorical readings, Part I sees new angles (previously undeveloped or underdeveloped) for researching Hong Kong films made during 1982-2002. Arguments are built along the ideas of Hong Kongers’ situational, diasporic consciousness, and transformed ‘Chineseness’ because Hong Kong has lacked a cultural/national centrality. This part of research is informed by the ideas of Jacques Derrida, Homi Bhabha and Stuart Hall, and the diasporic experiences of Ien Ang, Rey Chow and Ackbar Abbas. With these new research angles and references to the circumstances, Part II reads critically the text of eight Hong Kong films made during the Handover transition. In chronological order, they are Boat People (Hui, 1982), Song of the Exile (Hui, 1990), Days of Being Wild (Wong, 1990), Happy Together (Wong, 1997), Made in Hong Kong (Chan, 1997), Ordinary Heroes (Hui, 1999), Durian Durian (Chan, 2000), and Hollywood Hong Kong (Chan, 2002). They meet several criteria related to the undeveloped / underdeveloped areas in the existing Hong Kong film scholarship. Hamid Naficy’s ‘accented cinema’ paradigm gives the guidelines to the film analysis in Part II. This part shows that Hong Kongers’ self-transformation during transition is alterable, indeterminate, and interminable, due to the people’s situational, diasporic consciousness, and transformed ‘Chineseness’. This thesis thus contributes to Hong Kong cinema scholarship in interpreting films with new research angles, and generating new insights into this cinematic tradition and its wider context

In this paper, the author in a long time observation of the enterprise and interviews with several of the leading female individual true feelings at work and everyday experience, combined with p company staff specific data at the same time, try to describe the fact of employment for women's leadership, and using the gender theory and human resource theory to analyze the hidden in the deep reason of the fact after the phenomenon. Through collating and analyzing the obtained data and interview materials, we can see that there are still industrial segregation and occupational segregation in women's employment. These situations are caused by both natural physiological factors, social gender stereotypes, the division of labor within the family and the neglect of the value of housework, and more importantly, under the comprehensive influence of these factors, female individual's self-cognition.KEBusiness Administration and ManagementBSc/B

    Corporate Culture of Huawei

    No full text
In 1987, Huawei was founded in Shenzhen by Ren Zhengfei, at that time, it was just a small private company with registered capital of RMB 21,000. In 2013, Huawei had more than 140,000 employees, 16 R&D centers in 9 countries including US, India, Japan, Germany, Sweden, China, and so on. As a multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company, its products and services cover more than 140 countries, and it ranked 315th in the Fortune with revenue of $34.9 billion. Such a dramatic shift happen in just 26 years. However, there is just a few study about this company. So this article would take Huawei as its target study case. Since “Culture is particularly important when an organization is undergoing significant transformation or when introducing major reforms which require different or new cultural or value traits from those exhibited in the past”. My own perspective is to focus on the corporate culture of Huawei as a basis for understanding its successful development. This study would solve the following questions: first, where does the corporate culture of Huawei come from; second, how does such culture be disseminated; third, how does the Huawei’s special corporate influence the company’s development strategy and management structure. From this study, the author claim that the culture in Huawei is a mixture of three different culture, which turn out to be Chinese traditional culture, Mao Zedong’s military thought and western corporate culture. The way for Huawei to disseminate its culture mainly depends on its own university. And the culture of Huawei, like the thought of “surround the cities from the countryside”, has directly influenced its development strategy and its management structure.VTinternational economic and businessMSc/M

Identification and cross-validation of genetic loci conferring resistance to Septoria nodorum blotch using a German multi-founder winter wheat population

© The Author(s). Septoria nodorum blotch (SNB) is a disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum and T. durum) caused by the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Parastagonospora nodorum. SNB resistance is a typical quantitative trait, controlled by multiple quantitative trait loci (QTL) of minor effect. To achieve increased plant resistance, selection for resistance alleles and/or selection against susceptibility alleles must be undertaken. Here, we performed genetic analysis of SNB resistance using an eight-founder German Multiparent Advanced Generation Inter-Cross (MAGIC) population, termed BMWpop. Field trials and greenhouse testing were conducted over three seasons in Norway, with genetic analysis identifying ten SNB resistance QTL. Of these, two QTL were identified over two seasons: QSnb.nmbu-2A.1 on chromosome 2A and QSnb.nmbu-5A.1 on chromosome 5A. The chromosome 2A BMWpop QTL co-located with a robust SNB resistance QTL recently identified in an independent eight-founder MAGIC population constructed using varieties released in the United Kingdom (UK). The validation of this SNB resistance QTL in two independent multi-founder mapping populations, regardless of the differences in genetic background and agricultural environment, highlights the value of this locus in SNB resistance breeding. The second robust QTL identified in the BMWpop, QSnb.nmbu-5A.1, was not identified in the UK MAGIC population. Combining resistance alleles at both loci resulted in additive effects on SNB resistance. Therefore, using marker assisted selection to combine resistance alleles is a promising strategy for improving SNB resistance in wheat breeding. Indeed, the multi-locus haplotypes determined in this study provide markers for efficient tracking of these beneficial alleles in future wheat genetics and breeding activities

Clinical features and prognosis of discoid medial meniscus

To evaluate the clinical manifestations and the outcome of surgical treatment of discoid medial meniscus. Records of 13 patients with discoid medial meniscus were retrospectively reviewed for their epidemiology, clinical manifestations, operation methods, treatment outcome and radiographic characteristics. The 13 cases of discoid medial meniscal injury took up 1.5 aEuro degrees of the overall meniscal injuries treated at our institute during the 44-year period. Patients presented with knee pain (13 patients), giving away (10 patients), swelling (9 patients) and snapping (9 patients). The most common physical signs were medial joint line tenderness (13 patients) and positive McMurray test (11 patients). Ten patients required total meniscectomy. There were excellent short-term results: the median Tegner score was 7, and the mean Lysholm score was 94.8 +/- A 2.4 at two-year follow-up. However, the long-term outcome was not as good with degenerative changes in the medial compartment of all the involved knees. The discoid medial meniscus is extremely rare. The clinical signs and symptoms of discoid medial meniscal injuries are similar to those of any other meniscal injury. No Wrisberg-ligament type abnormality was found. Meniscectomy for discoid medial meniscus produced promising short-term results and deteriorating long-term results with secondary degeneration of cartilage in the medial compartment. Carbon nanotube grafted carbon fibres: A study of wetting and fibre fragmentation

    No full text
26/09/12 meb. Author version, OK to pub.Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grafted on IM7 carbon fibres using a chemical vapour deposition method. The overall grafting process resulted in a threefold increase of the BET surface area compared to the original primary carbon fibres (0.57 m2/g). At the same time, there was a degradation of fibre tensile strength by around 15% (depending on gauge length), due to the dissolution of iron catalyst into the carbon; the modulus was not significantly affected. The wetting behaviour between fibres and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was directly quantified using contact angle measurements for drop-on-fibre systems and indicated good wettability. Single fibre fragmentation tests were conducted on hierarchical fibre/PMMA model composites, demonstrating a significant (26%) improvement of the apparent interfacial shear strength (IFSS) over the baseline composites. The result is associated with improved stress transfer between the carbon fibres and surrounding matrix, through the grafted CNT layer. The improved IFSS was found to correlate directly with a reduced contact angle between fibre and matrix
