    Verb second

    No full text
This article outlines the key developments in the description and analysis of the Verb Second (V2) property. It shows how the classic analysis of V2, based principally on West-Germanic data, has changed in recent years to reflect a broader typological understanding of the phenomenon. Specifically, refinements to the typology of the V2 prefield, verb-subject inversion, and main-embedded asymmetries are outlined, along with the potential analyses that follow

On the cognitive difference between literary and specialized translation

    No full text
In order to be a part of an explanatory theory of translation, translation competence should be taken as the specific competence a translator needs beyond general types of competence, such as the knowledge of the source language and the target language. In literary translation, the translator is an expert reader of the source text, whereas in scientific translation it is unrealistic and not necessary to expect this. This imposes different requirements on translation competence

Diminutives and plurals of Dutch nouns

    No full text
In Dutch dictionaries, nouns appear with their plural and their diminutive. This reflects the intuition among native speakers that a noun normally has thesetwo related forms. Traditionally, the plural is considered inflectional whereasthe diminutive belongs to word formation. In his Parallel Architecture (PA),Jackendoff (2002) does not distinguish word formation and inflection. Here Iargue that the Dutch contrast does not support this view. I first present pluraland diminutive as categories, then briefly introduce PA, before proposinganalyses of the plural and diminutive in Dutch

Terms between Standardization and the Mental Lexicon

Classical terminology, as reflected in the works of Eugen Wüster, assumes that the meaning of terms should be delimited precisely. Prototype theory can be seen as an existential threat to this approach, because it assumes that there is a gradual transition from clear instances of a concept to non-instances, without a natural cut-off point. The discussion of terms from a variety of different domains suggests that we should distinguish two types, called here terms in the narrow sense (TiNS) and specialized vocabulary. For specialized vocabulary, it is not a problem that concepts have a prototype structure. For TiNS, a clear delimitation of the meaning is required. The introduction of TiNS as a special kind of term raises the question of their status as linguistic objects. For a word, there is no purely empirical basis to determine whether it exists as a word of English (or any other language), because neither English as a language nor any of its words are empirical entities. They exist as theoretical generalizations about speakers’ competence. TiNS are different. They are argued to exist as abstract entities in the same way as pieces of music

Lexicographic and logical definitions for terms

Definitions are a central concept in terminology. The original idea of definition stems from logic. Logical definitions are based on a set of necessary and sufficient conditions which determine a precise borderline of a concept. However, natural meanings are prototype-based, so that they do not have natural borderlines. In dictionaries, we find definitions that characterize the prototype. Therefore, they are generally not adequate as logical definitions. In terminology, this creates a tension. Dictionaries cannot be seen as a description of the vocabulary of a language, but should be interpreted as a source of information about the use of words. Logical definitions only have a role when they are supported by an authority. In domains in which rules have to be enforced, terms that determine the interpretation of a rule should have a logical definition supported by the domain-specific authority. In domains relating to empirical science, terms that are used in the evaluation of theories and theoretical claims should also have logical definitions. To what extent a generally accepted logical definition is achievable in such domains depends on the existence of a body that is generally accepted as the authority in the relevant domain

    Znaczenie nominalizacji

    No full text
Nominalisation is a morphological process producing a noun on the basis of an input that may belong to various categories. As noun is a syntactic category, whether something is a noun can only be decided on the basis of syntactic evidence, not on the basis of its meaning or morphological behaviour. As a theoretical framework, I use Jackendoff’s Parallel Architecture (PA) as a basis, but I argue for a separate word formation component. The central difference between word formation rules and regular lexical entries is that the latter contribute to the production of the representation of interpreted performance, whereas the former produce new lexical entries, thus changing competence. As a consequence, an expression in interpreted performance needs the identification of a reference in the communicative context, whereas word formation needs the identification of a concept in a speaker’s knowledge, which involves onomasiological coercion. A distinction can be made between two types of nominalisation, which I illustrate with Dutch examples. In one type, the meaning is changed, e.g. jager ‘hunter’ from jagen ‘huntv’, in the other it is not, e.g. telling ‘countn’ from tellen ‘countv’. Nominalisations of the latter type are transpositions. This distinction can be made both for deverbal and for deadjectival nouns. Rules changing representations in PA can be classified in seven classes according to which of the structures they modify. Only those that change conceptual structure qualify for being part of the word formation component. This excludes transpositions. Many nouns can be interpreted as either a transposition or a result of word formation. An example is vertaling ‘translation’, which can refer to the process or the result of translation. I argue that there is a word formation rule that produces the second reading on the basis of the first, and show that this rule belongs to a type that is predicted by the typology of rules for modifying representations in PA.Nominalizacja jest procesem morfologicznym, tworzącym rzeczownik w oparciu o bazę, która może reprezentować różne kategorie gramatyczne.

The etymology of internationalisms. Evidence from German and Slovak

    No full text
In the etymological information for a word in a dictionary, the first question to be answered is whether the word is a borrowing or the result of word formation. Here, we consider this question for internationalisms ending in -ation in German and in -ácia in Slovak. In German, -ation is a suffix that attaches to verbs in -ieren. For these verbs, it is in competition with -ung. In Slovak, -ácia is a suffix that attaches to bases of Latin or Greek origin. The corresponding verbs are often backformations. Most Slovak verbs also have a nominalization in -nie. In order to investigate to what extent the nouns in -ation or -ácia are borrowings or derived from the corresponding verbs in German and Slovak, we took a random sample of English nouns in -ation for which OED gives a corresponding verb. For this sample, we checked whether the cognate noun in -ation or -ácia is attested in standard dictionaries and in corpora. Then we did the same for the corresponding verbs and the nouns in -ung or -nie. Finally, we checked the frequency of these words in DeReKo for German and SNK for Slovak. On this basis, we found evidence that -ation in German has a slightly different status to -ácia in Slovak. This status affects the relationship to the corresponding verbs and to the nouns in -ung or -nie. Such generalizations are important as background information for specifying etymological information in dictionaries, especially for languages where first attestations dates are not readily available
