On Hitting-Set Generators for Polynomials That Vanish Rarely
The problem of constructing hitting-set generators for polynomials of low degree is fundamental in complexity theory and has numerous well-known applications. We study the following question, which is a relaxation of this problem: Is it easier to construct a hitting-set generator for polynomials p: ⁿ → of degree d if we are guaranteed that the polynomial vanishes on at most an ε > 0 fraction of its inputs? We will specifically be interested in tiny values of ε≪ d/||. This question was first considered by Goldreich and Wigderson (STOC 2014), who studied a specific setting geared for a particular application, and another specific setting was later studied by the third author (CCC 2017).
In this work our main interest is a systematic study of the relaxed problem, in its general form, and we prove results that significantly improve and extend the two previously-known results. Our contributions are of two types:
- Over fields of size 2 ≤ || ≤ poly(n), we show that the seed length of any hitting-set generator for polynomials of degree d ≤ n^{.49} that vanish on at most ε = ||^{-t} of their inputs is at least Ω((d/t)⋅log(n)).
- Over ₂, we show that there exists a (non-explicit) hitting-set generator for polynomials of degree d ≤ n^{.99} that vanish on at most ε = ||^{-t} of their inputs with seed length O((d-t)⋅log(n)). We also show a polynomial-time computable hitting-set generator with seed length O((d-t)⋅(2^{d-t}+log(n))).
In addition, we prove that the problem we study is closely related to the following question: "Does there exist a small set S ⊆ ⁿ whose degree-d closure is very large?", where the degree-d closure of S is the variety induced by the set of degree-d polynomials that vanish on S

Some taxonomical and nomenclatural changes in the genus Trachelomonas Ehrenb. emend. Defl. (Euglenophyta)
This paper deals with the taxonomic and nomenclatural revision of some species and infraspecific taxa of the genus Trachelomonas (Euglenophyceae). Twelve changes are suggested. Among them, we propose new synonyms for the following four taxa: Trachelomonas acanthophora var. minor Balech et Dastugue, T. acanthophora var. speciosa (Defl.) Balech, T. hispida (Perty) Stein emend. Defl. and T. superba var. swirenkiana Defl.; the identification of an unnamed but previously illustrated and described individual: T. amphoriformis var. granulosa Couté et Iltis; a new variety: T. megalacantha da Cunha var. paucispina Couté et Tell, and five new status and new combinations: T. crateriphora (Conforti et Ruiz) Couté et Tell, T. duplex (Defl.) Couté et Tell, T. rugulosa var. paralella fo. paralella (Tell et Zalocar) Couté et Tell and T. rugulosa var. paralella fo. minima (Conforti et Ruiz) Couté et Tell.Fil: Couté, Alain. Adhesion to fibronectin promotes the activation of the p125(FAK)/Zap-70complex in human T cells
The beta1 integrins are a family of heterodimeric adhesion receptors involved in cell-to-cell contacts and cell-to-extracellular matrix interactions. Through their adhesive role, integrins participate in transduction of outside/inside signals and contribute to trigger a multitude of cellular events such as differentiation, cell activation, and motility. The fibronectin integrin receptors, alpha4beta1 and alpha5beta1, can function as costimulatory molecules in T-cell receptor (TCR)-dependent T-cell activation. In the current study the Jurkat T-cell line was used as a model system to investigate the TCR-independent role of cell adhesion to fibronectin in the activation of Zap-70, a central molecule in the signalling events in T cells. Upon adhesion to plastic immobilized fibronectin but not to bovine serum albumin (BSA) the phosphorylation of p125FAK, a protein kinase that localizes to focal adhesion sites, was induced. Moreover, clustering of fibronectin receptors led to the detection of a p125FAK/Zap-70 complex. Finally, while the complex between fak-B, another protein kinase localized to focal adhesion sites, and Zap-70 was detected in cells plated either on BSA or on fibronectin, the formation of the p125FAK/Zap-70 complex appeared specifically induced following fibronectin-mediated integrin clustering. These data suggest the existence of a high degree of specificity when the members of the beta1 integrin family mediate signalling pathways in T cells
Goodbye Don't Ask Don't Tell - Hello Women in Combat: The Obama Legacy
This presentation looks at Don't Ask, Don't Tell and Women in Combat from the perspective of the Obama Legacy. It concludes that the rescinding of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy has been a success and is a lasting legacy of the Obama Presidency. The relaxing of women in combat restrictions combined with an institution wide effort to determine gender neutral standard for military occupations has resulted in a better way to match abilities to the job. One would not expect to have large numbers of women in combat because they are be less likely to self select in and more will not qualify for some jobs based on gender neutral occupational standards.Political Scienc
