Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textEn ces temps de crises socio-environnementales que nous traversons, il est nécessaire de repenser nos manières d’habiter la Terre, en rupture avec les logiques prédatrices de la modernité capitaliste. Dans ce contexte, on assiste dans le monde à l'émergence de mouvements de résistance paysanne qui luttent pour défendre les territoires menacés par l'hégémonie du développement. Au Brésil, pays où les inégalités foncières sont structurelles, le Mouvement des travailleurs ruraux Sans Terre est un protagoniste de la lutte pour une réforme agraire populaire en faveur de la justice sociale et environnementale. Le terrain de la recherche est situé dans la région Cantuquiriguaçu, un territoire paysan de 87 300 hectares exploité en monoculture pendant plus de cinquante ans, où habitent aujourd’hui 4700 familles. L'hypothèse de recherche repose sur la notion d'autonomie : sur l'idée que seule cette perspective permet de résister à la modernité capitaliste à travers un projet commun porté collectivement et sur le long terme par les paysans du territoire en question. L’analyse s’appuie sur quatre schémas de résistance mobilisés par les paysans de la Cantuquiriguaçu : la défense des communs, les stratégies d'enracinement, la recherche de la souveraineté alimentaire et la lutte pour l'autodétermination. En la matière, on y développe l’idée que la perspective d’autonomie s’est construite sur l’opposition radicale à des formes d'oppression et de violence qui opèrent à l'échelle mondiale. Elles se traduisent par la privatisation des communs, la déterritorialisation par l'exclusion, l'agrobusiness comme système de production dominant et l’ascension globalisante du néolibéralisme. Cette réalité nous a conduit à étudier d’autres formes de résistance contre-hégémonique, établissant notamment un parallèle avec le territoire du Larzac en France. Cet élargissement du regard vient enrichir la compréhension du « tournant éco-territorial » qui se dessine aujourd’hui. Il permet également d’esquisser des pistes de réflexions et d’actions pour repenser radicalement et durablement les formes d’établissement humains à partir du territoire.In these times of socio-environmental crisis that we are facing, it is necessary to rethink the ways of inhabiting the Earth, breaking with the predatory logic of capitalist modernity. Within this context, we witness the emergence of peasant resistance movements around the world, which struggle to defend territories threatened by the hegemony of development. In Brazil, a country where land inequalities are structural, the Landless Workers' Movement is a protagonist in the struggle for popular agrarian reform in favour of social and environmental justice. The research field is located in the Cantuquiriguaçu region, a peasant territory of 87,300 hectares that was exploited by monoculture for over fifty years and which nowadays houses 4,700 families. The research hypothesis is based on the notion of autonomy: in the idea that only this perspective allows resisting capitalist modernity through a long term project built collectively by the peasants of the territory in question. The analysis is based on four resistance schemes mobilized by Cantuquiriguaçu peasants: defence of commons, rooting strategies, pursuit of food sovereignty and struggle for self-determination. In this sense, we develop the idea that the perspective of autonomy is built on the basis of radical opposition to the forms of oppression and violence that operate on a global scale. These are translated through the privatization of commons, deterritorialization through exclusion, agribusiness as the dominant system of production and the globalizing rise of neoliberalism. This reality led us to study other forms of counter-hegemonic resistance, and to draw parallels, especially with the Larzac territory, in France. This widening of the gaze enriches our understanding of the "eco-territorial turn" that is taking shape today. It also makes it possible to outline plans of reflection and action to radically and sustainably rethink the forms of human settlement based on the territory.Nos tempos de crise socioambiental que atravessamos, se faz necessário repensar as maneirasde como habitar a Terra, rompendo com a lógica predatória da modernidade capitalista. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
