Atomistic study of hydrogen embrittlement of grain boundaries in nickel: II. Decohesion
Atomistic simulations of bicrystal samples containing a grain boundary are used to examine the effect of hydrogen atoms on the nucleation of intergranular cracks in Ni. Specifically, the theoretical strength is obtained by rigid separation of the two crystals above and below the GB and the yield strength (point of dislocation emission) is obtained by standard tension testing normal to the GB. These strengths are computed in pure Ni and Ni with H segregated to the grain boundaries under conditions typical of H embrittlement in Ni, and in artificially highly-H-saturated states. In all GBs studied here, the theoretical strength sigma(y) is not significantly reduced by the presence of the hydrogen atoms. Similarly, with the exception of the Ni Sigma 27(115) boundary, the yield strength sigma(y) is not significantly altered by the presence of segregated H atoms. In all cases, the theoretical strengths are similar to 25 GPa and the yield strengths are similar to 10 GPa, so that (i) the theoretical strength is always well above the yield strength, with or without H, and (ii) both strengths are far above the bulk plastic flow stress, sigma(B)(y) of Ni and Ni alloys. Significant reductions in fracture energy (25%-45%) are only achieved for some of the artificially high-H-segregation cases and then only when all the H around the GB is allow to diffuse locally to the fracture surface, which corresponds to unlikely out-of-equilibrium segregation plus local kinetics. Complementing recent work showing that H does not change the ability of GB cracks to emit dislocations and blunt, the present work indicates that equilibrium segregation of hydrogen atoms to GBs has little effect on lowering the GB strength and energy, and so does not significantly facilitate nucleation of intergranular cracks.LAMM
Atomistic study of hydrogen embrittlement of grain boundaries in nickel: I. Fracture
Hydrogen ingress into a metal is a persistent source of embrittlement. Fracture surfaces are often intergranular, suggesting favorable cleave crack growth along grain boundaries (GBs) as one driver for embrittlement. Here, atomistic simulations are used to investigate the effects of segregated hydrogen on the behavior of cracks along various symmetric tilt grain boundaries in fcc Nickel. An atomistic potential for Ni-H is first recalibrated against new quantum level computations of the energy of H in specific sites within the Ni Sigma 5(120) GB. The binding energy of H atoms to various atomic sites in the Ni Sigma 3(111) (twin), Ni Sigma 5(120), Ni Sigma 99(557), and Ni Sigma 9(221) GBs, and to various surfaces created by separating these GBs into two possible fracture surfaces, are computed and used to determine equilibrium H concentrations at bulk H concentrations typical of embrittlement in Ni. Mode I fracture behavior is then studied, examining the influence of H in altering the competition between dislocation emission (crack blunting; "ductile" behavior) and cleavage fracture ("brittle" behavior) for intergranular cracks. Simulation results are compared with theoretical predictions (Griffith theory for cleavage; Rice theory for emission) using the computed surface energies. The deformation behavior at the GBs is, however, generally complex and not as simple as cleavage or emission at a sharp crack tip, which is not unexpected due to the complexity of the GB structures. In cases predicted to emit dislocations from the crack tip, the presence of H atoms reduces the critical load for emission of the dislocations and no cleavage is found. In the cases predicted to cleave, the presence of H atoms reduces the cleavage stress intensity and makes cleavage easier, including Ni Sigma 9(221) which emits dislocations in the absence of H. Aside from the one unusual Ni Sigma 9(221) case, no tendency is found for H to cause a ductile-to-brittle transformation for cracks along GBs in Ni, either according to theory or simulation for initial equilibrium H segregation and with no, or limited, H diffusion near the newly-created fracture surfaces. The Ni Sigma 3(111) twin boundary does not absorb H at all, suggesting that embrittlement is more difficult in materials with higher fraction of such twin boundaries, as found experimentally. Experimental observations of cleavage-like failure are thus presumably caused by mechanisms involving H diffusion or dynamic crack growth. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.LAMM

Syriac-Arabic Glosses of Isho bar Ali. Volume 2
These two volumes constitute the second part (nun-taw) of the Syriac-Arabic dictionary of the 10th cent. physician Isho bar Ali (the first half of the dictionary had been published in 1874 by G. Hoffmann). Each Syriac word is defined in Arabic, often with more than one Arabic equivalent; in addition, the author deals not just with individual Syriac words, but in some cases with phrases. Gottheil used 21 manuscripts (from Oxford, London, Paris, Berlin, Leiden, and Rome) for this edition, and he has supplied a thorough critical apparatus; the manuscripts are described in the introduction. While some manuscripts give the Arabic glosses in Syriac characters (i.e. Garshuni), Gottheil has presented them here in Arabic script. These two volumes will be of great interest to Syriac lexicographers and those who study interactions between Syriac and Arabic.Contains an English introduction by Richard J.H. Gotthei

The Transcultural Critic: Sabahattin Ali and Beyond
The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue.Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes steht das Werk des türkischen Autors und Übersetzers aus dem Deutschen Sabahattin Ali, der mit seinem Roman Kürk Mantolu Madonna (Die Madonna im Pelzmantel) zu posthumem Ruhm gelangte. Author Self-Citation in the Turkish Otorhinolaryngology Literature
Objective:To evaluate the prevalence and other characteristics of author self-citations in six Turkey-originated general otorhinolaryngology (ORL) journals of Turkish ORL literature.Methods:A total of 970 articles published in six Turkey-originated general ORL journals (ENT Updates, Journal of Ear Nose Throat and Head Neck Surgery, KBB-Forum, Praxis of Otorhinolaryngology, The Turkish Journal of Ear Nose and Throat, and Turkish Archives of Otorhinolaryngology) in 2016-2020 were analyzed for author self-citations. The association between author self-citations and journal types, study types, study topics, country of origin, and compatibility with the topic were also evaluated.Results:There were 265 author self-citations (0.273 per article) which corresponded to 1.36% of all citations. There was no significant difference between the journal types, study topics, and origin of the studies in terms of mean self-citation values per study, whereas case reports had significantly lower self-citations than review and original investigations. There were three citations (1.1%) that were irrelevant to the study topic.Conclusion:To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that investigated the practice of author self-citation in Turkish ORL literature. Author self-citation rate in the Turkish-originated general ORL journals was found remarkably lower than the medical literature, whereas the self-citations were found compatible with the study topic to a very large extent. Members of the scientific community including authors, readers, and journal editors should be cautious regarding the unethical practices of self-citations
Effect of Hydrogen on the Phase Stability of Steels
In this work, we studied the role of extreme hydrogen concentrations on the relative stability of the fcc/bcc/hcp phases using the ab initio thermodynamics. The results indicate that at low hydrogen chemical potentials the stability of the fcc phase, which can be representative of retained austenite (RA) in steels, is slightly enhanced by the presence of H atoms. In contrast, at high hydrogen chemical potentials the bcc phase is stabilized by H. Moreover, since the excess volume of the hydrogen-rich bcc phase is significantly larger than that of the fcc phase, the presence of a stress field can change the relative stability of these phases in the coexistence regions of the phase diagram. This feature is particularly important for cyclic loading conditions: during loading cycles forward and reverse phase transformations occur and the H released by these transformations can damage the material
