Scientific realism, relativism and the problem of theory choice in science / Tee Sim Hui
Theory choice in science is a central and fascinating issue in the literature of philosophy of science that has been argued from different perspectives. One of the important
problems in the thesis of theory choice is the rationality of theory choice. Interestingly, philosophers of science incline to defend the rationality of theory choice, regardless of their philosophical standpoint, by demonstrating that the criteria of choice are plausible
and rational in promoting scientific progress. This study attempts to discuss and analyze the implications of the thesis of theory choice in scientific realism and relativism, which is a lacuna awaited to be filled. This study is by no means an exhaustive investigation on
the problem of theory choice. The focus will be given to the plausibility of the criteria of theory choice, which is raised by different schools of thought, and its connection to scientific progress

Pattern of synonymous codon usage in three strains of human coxsackievirus
The pattern of synonymous codon usage in organisms is not displayed in a random fashion. Some codons are used more frequently than the alternative synonymous codons. This phenomenon is found across species and across genes within a genome. This research investigated the patterns of synonymous codon usage in three strains of human coxsackievirus, using the bioinformatics approach. It was found that the studied strains exhibit a less biased synonymous codon usage pattern, which implies the low expressivity of the genes. Understanding of the patterns of synonymous codon usage is critical to the therapeutic strategies and drug designs to counteract the infection of human coxsackievirus
Transparency, photography, and the a-theory of time [Permatomumas, fotografija ir a laiko teorija]
Walton's thesis of transparency of photographs has spurred much dispute among critics. One of the popular objections is spatial agnosticism, an argument that concerns the inertia of egocentric spatial information vis-à-vis a photograph. In this paper, I argue that spatial agnosticism fails. Spatial agnostics claim, for a wrong reason, that a photographic image cannot carry egocentric spatial information. I argue that it is the disjuncture of the photographic world in which the depicted object situated from the space in which the viewer of the photograph resides that renders the photograph spatially agnostic. It is the timeless photographic world rather than the photographic object that renders egocentric spatial information inert. With this new formulation of spatial agnosticism, I propose that spatial agnosticism needs to be coupled with the temporal dimension (the A-theory of time) in the efforts to refute the thesis of transparency of photographs.

Cohesion metric for java inner class
Inner class is a helper class that is declared within the body of another class. To date, there is no cohesion metric specially designed for the inner classes. In current practice, the cohesion of inner classes is measured using the class cohesion metrics. However, the existing practice does not obtain the actual cohesion of inner class because the role of inner class as a helper class for its outer class is not evaluated. In this thesis, the cohesion
of inner class is measured in term of the single functionality it has fostered for the outer class as a whole. A total of 74 inner classes from 15 applications were investigated. This research presents a novel twofold approach in measuring the in-bound cohesion and outbound
cohesion for inner classes. The results demonstrate that the proposed metric, namely Inner Class Based-ELCOM (IELCOM), is an improvement of its predecessor External Lack of Cohesion Metric (ELCOM) in terms of measuring the cohesion of inner class. This proposed approach enables the software practitioners to recognize the cohesion of an inner class by considering the functional relationship between inner and outer class as an integrated whole
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
