Two types of saline waste were treated by phytoremediation: industrial effluents and marine sediments. The potential of three aquatic species, Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia and Juncus maritimus, to treat the Cl-ion contamination was characterised for different stages of maturity through laboratory tests. These species showed excellent adaptation to saline environments and in particular for a mature growth stage (one-year-old plants). Phytoremediation of the waste considered seems possible with significant reductions, both for effluents (50-95% reduction in 40 days) and solid matrices (5-30% reduction in 80 days). The remediation rates measured in the effluent tests are mainly explained by Cl- ion sorption mechanisms. Plants then play only a minor role via the export of their green matter. A larger scale experiment was carried out on marine sediments dredged specifically for this study. Over the experimental period studied, no plant growth was observed, resulting in no remedial effects. Several causes were identified or presupposed: the granulometry of the sediment (silt), the heat wave of 2019 or the presence of other contaminants (SO42-, metals/metalloids). Nevertheless, these tests have shown that phytoremediation as a single process for managing freshly dredged marine sediments is not suitable. New phytoremediation systems must therefore be studied on these sediments in combination with different processes such as leaching, reverse osmosis or evaporation. Moreover, in order to optimise the epuration capacities of plants in a phytoremediation process, it is necessary to use acclimatised and therefore local species. No method for tracing the geographical origin of aquaculture plants is currently recommended. A tracing tool based on the strontium isotopic ratio (87Sr/86Sr) has been studied in relation to the various frauds that can be observed in this sector. The feasibility of discriminating between geographical areas was assessed by comparing the isotopic signature of different productions throughout the world (France, Germany, Hungary, China). The characterisation of the biogeochemical cycle of Sr for aquatic plants highlighted the major contribution of irrigation water as well as that of agricultural practices, justifying the isotope ratios specific to the productions. The temporal stability of this tool was confirmed through the recultivation of foreign plants in local conditions. Thus, the stable isotopes of strontium are proving to be a valuable tool for certifying the geographical origin of aquatic plants and highlighting the frauds commonly observed in this field

Maritime dredged sediments brought ashore pose significant challenges due to their chloride content, making their disposal costly and limiting their recycling potential. This thesis explores phytoremediation as a method to reduce chlorides present in these sediments. Phytoremediation uses plants to remediate contaminated matrices. This study examined two main approaches. The first approach, called mixed phytoremediation, combines the natural recolonization of sediments by local species followed by human interventions. Case studies in Occitania were conducted. The results show that the presence of the halophyte species Suaeda vera, while beneficial for renaturation, hinders chloride phytoremediation by promoting the degradation of soil structure, the sequestration of chlorides in the root zone and preventing its leaching. Other species, although theoretically favorable, did not sufficiently colonize the sediments to achieve chloride reduction objectives within reasonable timeframes. The second approach examines the process of sediments, from their pretreatment by drying in geotubes and in the open air, to cultivation. The results indicate that effective drying is indispensable before any phytoremediation intervention, as it significantly reduces chloride concentrations to levels that phytoremediation alone cannot achieve. However, even after drying, the sediments remain sodic and do not meet the acceptance thresholds for inert waste storage facilities, highlighting the need for complementary methods such as phytoremediation. Laboratory tests with the species Arundo donax, selected as a species of interest, showed that the plant survives in dredged sediments when planted in a peat clump. The peat accumulates more chlorides than the aerial parts of the plant. The roots of Arundo donax also seem to improve the leaching of ions. The case studies of spontaneous recolonization and the laboratory results concerning the cultivation of Arundo donax support the theory that, similar to what has already been proven for sodium phytoremediation, the positive (or negative) action of roots on soil permeability is more impactful than the accumulation of ions in the plant itself

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Impact of hypoxia on the fate of nutrients and metals in Mediterranean lagoon sediments

Studies carried out in recent years have shown that oxygen concentration in the water column is the main factor controlling all biogeochemical reactions in surface sediment, as well as controlling transfers of nutrients, trace elements (TE) at the sediment water interface (SWI). Three lagoons on France’s Mediterranean coast (Berre, Thau and Prévost) are among the world’s most eutrophied coastal zones impacted by hypoxia episodes, with high accumulations of nutrients, metals and metalloids in their sediment. They are also characterized by different benthic habitats, some of which include macrophytes, which have been shown to regulate nutrient flux at IES. This thesis project aims to better understand the impact of deoxygenation phenomena on the mobility of nutrients and TE present in Mediterranean lagoon sediment, in the presence of different benthic habitats representing their eutrophication gradient. The results show that the Berre lagoon is the site most impacted by long-lasting (1 week) and seasonal episodes of deoxygenation; the Prévost lagoon exhibits wide nycthemeral variations, going from hypoxia to hyperoxia in less than 12 h during the summer season; the Thau lagoon site seems the most resilient about deoxygenation. Under summer conditions, sediment and porewater concentrationprofiles show enrichments in nutrients and sulfides in the substrates of benthic habitats in lagoons with the most advanced eutrophication status (Berre and Prévost), and also in the presence of macroalgae (Prévost and Thau). These enrichments are the result of strong organic matter mineralization, and the more reducing conditions in these habitats binding the TE (As, Sb, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, Co, Hgtot) to the solid phase of the sediment. Comparison with available environmental thresholds enables us to identify habitats in the Berre lagoon that are highly at risk in terms of eutrophication support, remobilization of TE at SWI and ecotoxicological risk. The acquisition of dissolved oxygen concentration gradients within the benthic boundary layer (BBL) at high temporal resolution has enabled us to identify the high oxygen demand of sediment in the Berre lagoon and the nighttime deoxygenations resulting from the presence of opportunistic macroalgae in the Prévost lagoon. The punctual acquisition of concentration gradients illustrates nutrient exports from the sediment to the water column that are more intense under anoxic and euxinic conditions, and exports ofMn, Fe, As, Co under hypoxic conditions. However, concentration gradients under euxinic conditions indicate the trapping of TE (Mn, Fe, Cu,Mo) with the sulfide phases of the sediment. In addition, in situ and ex situ incubation experiments under "forced" deoxygenation conditions for the various benthic habitats present at these three sites yielded SWI fluxes that also followed this trend. Nutrient fluxes were shown to intensify following deoxygenation in eutrophied bare sediment habitats affected by deoxygenation (Berre) and specifically in habitats containing opportunistic (Prévost) and perennial (Thau) macroalgae. For these same habitats, the most intense exports of TE (Mn, Fe, As, Co, V , Mo) were measured under hypoxic and anoxic conditions, while fluxes decreased or reversed under euxinic conditions. This comparative and experimental field approach brings an integrative biogeochemical perspective on the chemical quality of sediment in lagoon environments undergoing re-oligotrophication. It provides a context for their great temporal variability, as well as their vulnerability to climate change

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Geographic tracing of olive oils by Sr isotopes : analytical development and application to Nîmes PDO oils

For many years, an approach based on the identification of the geographical origin for food product has been implemented through the knowledge of its Sr isotopes, particularly through the analysis of 87Sr / 86Sr ratio. The objective of this thesis is to develop a similar strategy for the olive oils, from the example of PDO Nimes (Gard), in southern France. A specific methodology is necessary since the existing purification protocols of Sr revealed themselves inadequate because of viscosity, high organic load, low Sr content of this matrix In order to proceed to the analysis of the isotopic composition (IC), the first part of the study highlights the definition and validation of a specific method for the treatment of olive oils and strontium purification. The second part of the study is dedicated to expose the processes of assimilation and transfer of strontium into the olive tree. This approach, conducted through a detailed study of one of Nîmes PDO mills, demonstrated that the transfer of strontium from soils to olive tree, and within the olive tree, occurs without isotope fractionation. The last part of the manuscript studies the isotopic ratios 87Sr / 86Sr of the ten PDO olive oils of Nimes and consists in a comparison of this signature with the geological formations underlying the cultivation soils. This approach allows discussing quality of Sr isotopic tool in the geographical recognition of the olive products. The observed similarity between th IC from oils and soil allow us to conclude that, in this context of production, the Sr isotopes are a efficient tool to trace and certify the geographical origin of the oil

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
