    Sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) invades old-growth subtropical montane forest, but is it worth removing? (Argentina)

    The results of a study we carried out in a subtropical montane forest of the Parque Nacional El Rey in northwestern Argentina, indicate that sour orange- an understorey tree species native to southeast Asia- is invading old-growth forest sites much more successfully than second-growth forest sites. This suggest to us that the main factor favoring the invasion is the similarity of this old-growth habitat to the species’ natural habitat, rather than the degree of disturbance of the native vegetation. (…) Conservation policies for protected areas often recommend the eradication of exotics. However in the ecosystem we studied we believe that removal of sour orange may not be the best option for a number of reasons. First, there have been no reports of negative effects on the native forest due to sour orange. Second, all the consumers of sour orange fruits in the invaded area are vertebrates with high conservation value. They may have incorporated sour orange into their winter diets as supplement. If so, sour orange may strongly increase the carrying capacity of the reserve area for wildlife. The apparent benefit for the invaded community, derived from sour orange, illustrates the importance of inquiring into the identity of each alien species and its interaction with the invaded community before launching an eradication plan.Fil: Tecco, Paula Andrea.     Plant invasion in undisturbed ecosystems: the triggering atrributes approach

    The invasion of a target community by a non-indigenous plant species includes the stages of arrival, establishment and spread, which tend to depend on different characteristics of the invasive species and its context. While the mechanisms behind the invasion of highly disturbed ecosystems are well known, our understanding of the invasion process in undisturbed or weakly disturbed ecosystems is much more limited. Here we propose that, once a non-indigenous species has arrived to a new ecosystem and become established, the likelihood that it spreads, and thus becomes invasive, may depend on just one or very few characteristics, called‘triggering attributes’(TA). We propose that a TA is a vegetative or regenerative attribute discontinuously distributed in comparison to the resident community. This attribute allows the species to benefit from a resource that is permanently or temporarily unused by the resident community. We present an original study case and examples from the literature to illustrate our approach, and we also propose some ways to test it in different ecosystems.Fil: Gurvich, Diego Ezequiel.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Árboles y arbustos invasores de la Provincia de Córdoba (Argentina): Una contribución a la sistematización de bases de datos globales

    Se presenta la primera base de especies invasoras arbóreas y arbustivas de la Provincia de Córdoba y se analiza en el contexto de las invasiones por leñosas a escala nacional y mundial. Se identificaron 34 especies leñosas exóticas invasoras. La mayoría son originarias de Europa, Asia y Medio Oriente, introducidas como ornamentales. Los ecosistemas más invadidos son los pastizales (39%) seguido por bosques y matorrales (32%). La mayoría (59%) se dispersan por animales (aves) y viento (35%). A excepción de dos especies, la mayoría son también invasoras en otros lugares del mundo. No obstante, solo la mitad de las invasoras de Córdoba se registraban como invasoras de Sudamérica. Esto último refleja la magnitud en la cual se está subestimando la invasibilidad del continente Sudamericano. Dos especies (Cupressus macrocarpa y Zanthoxylum armatum) se incorporarían como nuevas especies en la base mundial de leñosas invasoras. Se detalla la información faltante en dos bases nacionales, esperando contribuir a la actualización de estos valiosos documentos. Finalmente se listan seis especies nativas de Argentina que estarían invadiendo comunidades vegetales de Córdoba. Esperamos que esta base de datos aporte al desarrollo de estudios básicos y aplicados en la ecología de las invasiones biológicas.Invasive alien trees and shrubs in Córdoba Province (Argentina): a contribution to the systematization of global bases. We present the first database of invasive alien trees and shrubs of Córdoba Province and analyze it in the context of current national and global databases. We identified 34 invasive woody alien species. Most aliens are from Europe, Asia and Middle East origin, introduced for horticulture reasons. Grasslands are the most invaded ecosystem (39%), followed by woodlands and shrublands (32%). Most of the species (59%) are dispersed by animals (birds) and wind (35%). Except for two species, most of the species has also been recorded as invaders in other areas of the world. However, only half of them are currently registered as invaders in South America. This might reflect the notably lower research on biological invasions within the continent and the subsequent bias and underestimation of its invasibility. Two species (Cupressus macrocarpa and Zanthoxylum armatum) should be incorporated as new species in the global database. We also refer to some missing information in two major national databases, hoping to contribute with their updating. Finally, we mention six species native to Argentina to be considered as native invaders of Cordoba Province ecosystems.     Reciprocal interactions between a non-native shrub and the dominant native trees of a high mountain woodland: who benefits?

    Facilitation by nurse plants is a common interaction, whereby climatic harshness and/or other limiting factors are reduced under the canopy of the “nurse” plant, favoring the regeneration of other plant species. In mountain systems, nurse plant interactions among coexisting native and non-native woody species might reciprocally affect the regeneration patterns of the involved species. Elucidating these relationships might contribute to the understanding of interactions that facilitate the success of non-native woody species at high elevations. We assessed whether the non-native shrub Cotoneaster franchetii and the dominant native trees Polylepis australis and Maytenus boaria, reciprocally affect each other’s regeneration in highland woodlands of central Argentina. We recorded woody recruits (seedlings and saplings) and micro-environmental conditions under the three nurse plants and in gaps without woody cover. The frequency of occurrence of Cotoneaster and Maytenus recruits differed among microhabitats. Polylepis regeneration in the area was almost null. The highest Cotoneaster recruit frequency was under the canopy of conspecifics and Polylepis. Maytenus recruit frequencies did not differ among microhabitats, but saplings had higher frequency under Polylepis than under conspecific nurses. The apparently higher quality of Polylepis as nurse plant might be related to intermediate conditions of photosynthetically active radiation and milder winter temperatures under its canopy. Non-native shrub regeneration seems to be facilitated by one of the native species, whereas neither of the natives seems to be favored by the invader. These results support the importance of biotic interactions as drivers of woody invasion success in mountain ecosystems.Fil: Tapella, María Paz.     Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
