Measuring the socialization of graduate and diplomate nurses using the Corwin Role Orientation Scale

    No full text
The nature of United Kingdom (UK) nursing education has changed significantly as the responsibility has been transferred from hospitals to the University sector. More information is needed on the outcome of the Project 2000 diploma and degree courses given the rapidly changing health care context. This paper focuses on the role socialization of graduate and diploma nurses. As part of a larger study, this research investigated the role orientations of 52 nursing graduates and 28 diplomates from two different universities at three time points; on graduation and at 6 and 12 months postgraduation. The Corwin Role Orientation Scale was selected and modified for the study. It comprised of three separate scales measuring professional, bureaucratic and service orientation. The data from the two groups of nurses were examined to identify nurses' ideal role orientations and role discrepancies over the transitionary period from graduate to qualified nurse. Although the results showed observed differences between the groups over time, none of these differences were statistically significant. The findings raise a number of questions about the value of the instrument as a measure in the contemporary nursing context. Furthermore, each of the Corwin subscales had a low internal reliability. A possible explanation may be that the instrument, which was developed in the United States of America (USA) in the 1960s, and modified, for this study, has little relevance for contemporary UK nursing. The study findings are also limited by the small size of the sample. In spite of these limitations, the study suggests there are few differences between the role orientations and socialization experiences of UK nursing graduates and diplomates. Indeed, both programmes commonly take place in university settings and students receive the same amount of clinical experience. Further instrument development and exploratory research is recommended to identify the role socialization and orientations of UK nurses through larger national studies

A comparison of the nursing competence of graduates and diplomates from UK nursing programmes

    No full text
This paper reviews the literature on nursing competence measurement and reports the results of a comparative quantitative study of the competencies of Project 2000 diplomates and BA (Hons) Adult Nursing graduates from two UK nursing programmes. The findings reveal that graduates appear to overcome any initial limitations and become more competent than the diplomates in certain areas. Attention to social awareness and participation is necessary in both pre-registration programmes, whilst greater attention could be given to graduates' leadership and management development. Diplomates need support in their professional development if they are to achieve the same level of competence as graduates during the first post-qualifying year. There are implications for the level of support afforded to qualifying nurses in their first staff positions; preceptorship programmes could be an important means of assisting newly qualified staff to gain confidence. More research on nurse competencies with larger samples drawn from programmes across the UK is needed

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVE FARM BILL PROPOSALS

    No full text
Various farm organizations and political parties are taking sides on whether the FAIR Act needs to be scraped or just modified. This study analyzes three such proposals: the U.S. House of Representatives proposal (H.R. 2646), the American Farm Bureau proposal, and the National Farmers Union proposal. The continuation of the FAIR Act is also included as an another alternative. The H.R. 2646 and the American Farm Bureau proposals are modifications of the FAIR Act while the National Farmers Union proposal is a totally redesigned bill. The H.R. 2646 and the Farm Bureau proposals are very similar in their results. They provide higher net farm income for the large size farm than the Farmers Union proposal does early in the forecast period, but the Farmers Union proposal provides higher net farm income in the last three years of the time period. The Farmers Union proposal provides higher net farm income for the medium and small size farm than either the H.R. 2646 or the Farm Bureau proposals because of the targeting feature. The FAIR Act provides less net farm income for all size farms than any other proposal.Farm Bill, Targeting, North Dakota Representative Farms, H.R. 2646, National Farmers Union, American Farm Bureau, Agricultural and Food Policy,

The strife, between an old hunker, a barnburner and a no party man

    No full text
A particularly well-drawn satire on the three major presidential contenders for 1848, (left to right) Zachary Taylor, Martin Van Buren and Lewis Cass. Of the three the artist seems to favor Van Buren, the "Barnburner" candidate, who sits on a stool milking the cow which the others try in vain to move in opposite directions. Taylor, who tugs at the tail of the animal, is called a "No Party Man" because of his continued refusal to commit to a party ideology. Cass, the "Hunker" or conservative Democrat, strains at the cow's horns. Van Buren: "I go in for the free soil. Hold on Cass, dont let go Taylor, (That's the cream of the Joke)." Van Buren was the candidate of a coalition, between Barnburner Democrats and Liberty and Whig party abolitionists, called the Free Soil party. Zachary Taylor: "I don't Stand on the whig Platform 'I ask no favor and shrink from no Responsibility.'" Lewis Cass: "Matty is at his old tricks again, and going in for the Spoils old Zack, and myself will get nothing but skim milk."Entered . . . 1848 by H.R. Robinson.Printed & published by H.R. Diet, physical activity and substrate oxidation : implications for appetite control, weight loss and body composition

    No full text
In many countries, governments and health agencies are strongly promoting physical activity as a means to prevent the accumulation of fatness that leads to weight gain and obesity. However, there is often a resistance to respond to health promotion initiatives. For example, in the UK, the Chief Medical Officer has recently reported that 71% of women and 61% of men fail to carry out even the minimal amount of physical activity recommended in the government’s guidelines. Similarly, the Food safety Agency has promoted reductions in the intake of fat, sugar and salt but with very little impact on the pattern of consumption. Why is it that recommendations to improve health are so difficult to implement, and produce the desired outcome

    The buffalo hunt

An optimistic view of the presidential prospects of Martin Van Buren, nominated at the Free Soil Party's August 1848 convention in Buffalo, New York. Here Van Buren rides a buffalo and thumbs his nose as he sends Democratic candidate Lewis Cass (left) and Whig Zachary Taylor flying. Both are about to land in Salt River. Van Buren says defiantly, "Clear the track! or I'll Ram you both!" Cass, whose "Wilmot Proviso" hat has already landed in the river, exclaims, "Confound this Wilmot Proviso, I'm afraid it will lead to something bad." (On the Wilmot Proviso see "Whig Harmony," no. 1848-21.) Cass's opposition to the proviso put him at odds with a large number of Democrats. Taylor speculates, "If I had stood on the Whig platform firmly, this would not have happened." He cites his reluctance to decisively embrace the regular Whig party doctrines. His cap flies in the air, spilling a packet of "Dead Letters." (On the "dead letter" matter see "The Candidate of Many Parties," no. 1848-24.)Entered . . . 1848 by H.R. The semantic grid and chemistry: experiences with CombeChem

    No full text
The Combechem e-Science project has demonstrated the advantages of using Semantic Web technology, in particular RDF and the associated triplestores, to describe and link diverse and complex chemical information, covering the whole process of the generation of chemical knowledge from inception in the synthetic chemistry laboratory, through analysis of the materials made which generates physical measurements, computations based on this data to develop interpretations, and the subsequent dissemination of the knowledge gained. The RDF descriptions employed allow for a uniform description of chemical data in a wide variety of forms including multimedia, and of the chemical processes both in the laboratory and in model building. The project successfully adopted a strategy of capturing semantic annotations ‘at source’ and establishing schema and ontologies based closely on current operational practice in order to facilitate implementation and adoption. We illustrate this in the contexts of the synthetic organic chemistry laboratory with chemists at the bench, computational chemistry for modelling data, and the linking of chemical publications to the underlying results and data to provide the appropriate provenance. The resulting ‘Semantic Data Grid’ comprises tens of millions of RDF triples across multiple stores representing complex chains of derived data with associated provenance

Constraining variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation at 25N from historical observations, 1980 to 2005

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) plays an important role inmaintaining western Europe’s moderate climate. Although expected to weaken underincreasing greenhouse gas concentrations, the magnitude of the response remainsuncertain. Monitoring of the Atlantic MOC strength at 25ºN commenced in 2004 as partof the UK Rapid Climate Change programme. Prior to this, detection of such a slowingof the MOC and its associated meridional heat transport was inhibited by the temporallysparse observations of its strength. This thesis aims to extend the time series of AtlanticMOC at 25ºN back to 1980 using historical observations, thus constraining themagnitude of its recent interannual variability.Analysis of transatlantic hydrographic sections at 25ºN show the annual average MOCto have varied in strength by approximately 25% over the last 50 years, with weakeroverturning in 2004 than previously computed. Temporal resolution of the dataset isincreased through decomposition of the Atlantic MOC at this latitude into its Ekmancomponent computed from wind stress climatology, transport of the Florida Currentfrom cable observations and mid-ocean geostrophic transport from CTD or mooredtemperature and pressure derived boundary dynamic height profiles. The resulting timeseries constrain interannual fluctuations of the Ekman, Florida Straits and mid-oceanbaroclinic geostrophic transports at ± 1, ± 2, and ± 3 Sv respectively between 1980 and2005. In addition to interannual fluctuations in strength, evidence is found for a 2 to 3Sv weakening of the MOC between 1980 and 2005. The underlying changes ofincreased mid-ocean southward transport of thermocline waters and decreasedsouthward flow of lower North Atlantic Deep Water are consistent in sign, although ofreduced magnitude, with the transatlantic hydrographic sections observations. Thisthesis presents and discusses these findings along with the relative merits of differentdatasets for detecting such variability
