literário do autor.
Tornar-se-á fundamental, neste ponto, explorar a
The following research aims at making a critical commentary on Gonçalo M.
Tavares’ tetralogy O Reino, of which are part the novels Um Homem: Klaus Klump, A
Máquina de Joseph Walser, Jerusalém and Aprender a Rezar na Era da Técnica,
according to a reading that tries to highlight the importance of the body and of evil in
the literary universe of the author.
Starting with a preliminary approach on the corporeality in the different
modalities of its literary and cultural representation, we will then consider the universe
of infirmities in the author’s novels. In order to achieve a solid study on this matter, we
will perforce research on the body in relation to pain and death, and we will moreover
analyze the narrative spaces and times of human abasement, an ubiquitous theme in
Tavares’ oeuvre. At this point, it is central that we explore the importance of physical
extremities as means of connection between the body and space, and we will spare a
few pages on this subject in the last chapter of this dissertation.
Apart from these topics, which we will intersect, this study also aims at
understanding the diegetic outline of the warlike realm – transversal to all the novels –
and at reflecting on the concept of horror and the reactions to it.
Likewise, since the relationship between body and technique is a key notion for
the overall understanding of G. M. Tavares’ tetralogy, we include it in our research.
On the whole, in light of the reflections on the myriad of realities that we refer
above, we intend to achieve a general understanding of the themes of the body and evil
in the novels of G. M. Tavares
