Vegetation Pattern Formation Due to Interactions Between Water Availability and Toxicity in Plant-Soil Feedback
Development of a comprehensive theory of the formation of vegetation patterns is still in progress. A prevailing view is to treat water availability as the main causal factor for the emergence of vegetation patterns. While successful in capturing the occurrence of multiple vegetation patterns in arid and semiarid regions, this hypothesis fails to explain the presence of vegetation patterns in humid environments. We explore the rich structure of a toxicity-mediated model of the vegetation pattern formation. This model consists of three PDEs accounting for a dynamic balance between biomass, water, and toxic compounds. Different (ecologically feasible) regions of the model's parameter space give rise to stable spatial vegetation patterns in Turing and non-Turing regimes. Strong negative feedback gives rise to dynamic spatial patterns that continuously move in space while retaining their stable topology
The frequency domain approach to analyse field-scale miscible flow transport experiments in the soils
A new approach to the estimate of the parameters u (advective velocity) and λ (dispersivity) characterizing solute transport in soils is presented. The pair (u, λ) is estimated by matching in the frequency domain (FD) the theoretical expression of moments pertaining to the breakthrough curve (BTC) against to the one evaluated by means of the experimental data. In particular, we demonstrate that to reduce the impact of the random measurement-errors upon such an estimate, it is worth retaining in the Fourier's expansion of the moments only the harmonics associated to the smaller frequencies. This is due to the fact that the Fourier transform moves most of the measurement-errors affecting moments in the high-frequency range. As a consequence, by adopting a relatively small number of harmonics to compute the Fourier transform of the experimental moments, one may filter out most of the noise. It is also shown that the number of harmonics to retain (cut-off) depends upon the soil's water content as well as the magnitude of the characteristic length lE
of the error relative to the dispersivity λ.
The proposed methodology has been applied to a recently conducted plot-scale transport experiment. For comparison purposes, we have also estimated the pair (u, λ) by the classical method of moments (MM). Both the methods lead to the same value of the advective velocity u. This is explained by recalling that u depends upon the first-order moment, a quantity that is scarcely influenced by the measurement-errors. Instead, the estimate of the dispersivity λ (which is related to the second-order moment) is largely different (with the value achieved by the MM larger than the one obtained by the FD approach). Such a difference is addressed to the fact that in the MM the distortion-effect due to the measurement-errors amplifies with the increasing order of the moments, a phenomenon which is completely avoided in the FD approach by adopting the above mentioned cut-off
Shear-induced nitric oxide production by endothelial cells
We present a biochemical model of the wall shear stress-induced activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in an endothelial cell. The model includes three key mechanotransducers: mechanosensing ion channels, integrins, and G protein-coupled receptors. The reaction cascade consists of two interconnected parts. The first is rapid activation of calcium, which results in formation of calcium-calmodulin complexes, followed by recruitment of eNOS from caveolae. The second is phosphorylation of eNOS by protein kinases PKC and AKT. The model also includes a negative feedback loop due to inhibition of calcium influx into the cell by cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). In this feedback, increased nitric oxide (NO) levels cause an increase in cGMP levels, so that cGMP inhibition of calcium influx can limit NO production. The model was used to predict the dynamics of NO production by an endothelial cell subjected to a step increase of wall shear stress from zero to a finite physiologically relevant value. Among several experimentally observed features, the model predicts a highly nonlinear, biphasic transient behavior of eNOS activation and NO production: a rapid initial activation due to the very rapid influx of calcium into the cytosol (occurring within 1–5 min) is followed by a sustained period of activation due to protein kinases.Full Tex
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
