    Pursuit responses to target steps during ongoing tracking

    Brief smooth eye-velocity responses to target position steps have been reported during smooth pursuit. We investigated position-error responses in eight healthy human subjects, comparing the effects of a step-ramp change in target position when imposed on steady-state smooth pursuit, vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) slow phases, or fixation. During steadystate pursuit or VOR, the target performed a step-ramp movement in the same or in the opposite direction relative to ongoing eye movements. When the step was directed backward relative to steady-state smooth pursuit, eye velocity transiently decreased (1.3 ± 0.4°/s; average peak change in amplitude ± SD), beginning about 100 ms after the step. The amplitude of position-error responses varied inversely with the step size. In contrast, there was little or no response in trials with forward steps during steady-state smooth pursuit, when step-ramps were imposed on VOR or when smooth pursuit began from fixation. We hypothesize that during ongoing smooth tracking when a sudden shift in target position is detected the pursuit system compares the direction of ongoing eye velocity with the relative positional error on the retina. In the case of different relative directions between ongoing tracking and a new target eccentricity, a position-error response toward the new target is initiated. Such a mechanism might help the smooth pursuit system to respond better to changes in target direction. These experimental findings were simulated by a mathematical model of smooth pursuit by implementing direction-dependent behavior with a position-error gating mechanism

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Non-linearity in gaze holding: Experimental results and possible mechanisms

    Cerebellar impairment may cause deficits in horizontal gaze holding, leading to centrifugal gaze-evoked nystagmus during fixation of eccentric targets. Healthy individuals show a weak drift leading to physiological nystagmus only at large gaze angles. These drifts are due to imperfect memory of the neural circuitry generating the eye position signals by integration of velocity signals. The cerebellum plays a crucial role in reducing the "leakiness" of this neural integrator. This neural integrator has been traditionally modeled as a first order low-pass filter, implying a linear relation between drift velocity and eye eccentricity. Evidences of a nonlinear behavior, however, can be found in the literature. In a recent series of papers we showed that the eye drift velocity (V) can be descriptively modeled as a tangent function of gaze eccentricity (P) with the following equation: V= k(2)/k(1) tan (k(1)P). Notably, the two parameters have distinct roles: k(1) regulates the rate of compression of the tangent, exclusively determining the non-linearity; k(2) is a pure scaling factor. This descriptive model robustly fitted the data of healthy individuals both at baseline (n = 50) and following transient cerebellar impairment induced by controlled amounts of alcohol [blood alcohol content 0.06% (n 15) and 0.1% (n = 15)] and of patients with chronic cerebellar impairment of various origin (n = 20). Interestingly, alcohol selectively changed the scaling factor k(2) , evidencing that an overall, transient cerebellar impairment does not impact the non-linear behavior. Patients with cerebellar degeneration, on the other hand, showed a change in both k(1) and k(2) , implying a role of the cerebellum in limiting the range of eye positions where the non-linearity becomes relevant. Non-linearity has been reported in literature for both the neural integrator and the eye plant. While previous models using a neural network attempted to reproduce the non-linear behavior of the brainstem, we propose a block diagram reproducing the observed PV tangent relation by introducing a position dependency in the parameters of the cerebellar feedback loop

    It was known from ancient times that vertigo was a malady, and the inner ears of animals contained an intricate network of structures named the labyrinth whose function was unknown. The flourishing of human vestibular anatomy in the Renaissance period still adhered to age old notions of traditional spiritual philosophy. In the post Renaissance period, when science was being redefined and challenging these traditional thoughts, vestibular physiology was born. Started by Flourens, it gathered momentum with Hogyes, Goltz, Breuer, Mach, Crum Brown, Ewald, Brown Sequard and Baginsky in the 19th century. They discovered the role of the vestibular organ in sensing balance and the fine intricacies of vestibular physiology valid to this day. Ménière shattered the concept of traditional aetiology of vertigo and de Cyon challenged the Kantian concept of space. The science catapulted to the modern century. This article traces the history of these pioneers of vestibular physiology

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
