    Tarantino the Cartoonist

    No full text
In cinema it is not uncommon to see the interrelation of animation and live action but, despite this, the ascription of characteristics of one medium onto the other has been largely one-dimensional: live action upon animation. The films of Quentin Tarantino, however, illustrate an attribution of a cartoon-like aesthetic in live-action sequences, which the author subsequently terms `cartoonism'. `Cartoonism' and its development have been highlighted in Tarantino's work, showing his continual desire to realize this aesthetic in his own work whilst, ironically, only fully achieving this aesthetic in another's film. The conclusions are illuminating with respect to Tarantino's filmic politics and provide a potential mode of inquiry within film theory

Disabilità, autonomia individuale e libertà personale. Aspirazioni e condizioni

Chinese Free and Open-Source Software has become a structural component of the Chinese Internet in recent years. Despite FOSS’s cultural importance as a value-laden IT practice, the topic has received little attention from the social sciences. This article contributes to filling this gap by using as a lens a local association of FOSS enthusiasts located in one major Chinese city, c. 10 years after the 1st observation (Tarantino 2011), focussing on FOSS practitioners’ imaginaries and motivations

Improved method for discriminating agricultural crops using geostatistics and remote sensing RID G-9191-2011

Reliable land cover mapping of agricultural areas require high resolution remote sensing and robust classification techniques. In this paper, we propose the integration of spectral information with spatial information using the traditional statistical supervised classifier "Maximum Likelihood" and a geostatistical tool, "Indicator Kriging" algorithm, for the development of land cover maps by supervised classification from remotely sensed data at medium and high spatial resolution. The proposed method showed better results in classes' discrimination with smoother resulting maps than the ones produced using only spectral information. Two different satellites imagery were analyzed: a Landsat TM5 image at medium spatial resolution acquired during 2006 and an Ikonos II image at higher spatial resolution acquired during 2008. The better performance of the "combined" approach compared to the traditional Maximum Likelihood technique was confirmed by confusion matrix. The overall accuracy increases from 76.16% to 85.96% for LandsatTM image and from 71.56% to 80.25% for the IKONOS image. (C) 2011 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). Murgia Alta: Ailantus altissima invasive species presence map (2012)

    No full text
An Ailanthus altissima invasive species presence map in "Murgia Alta" PA, for 2012, obtained by a two stage algorithm [1]. The first stage considers the deciduous vegetation layer obtained by a multiclass knowledge-based classification of 4 multi-seasonal VHR Worldview-2 images. In the second stage an SVM classifier was used to detect, in a two-classes problem, the Ailanthus invasive species within the deciduous layer vegetation boundaries overimposed on 2 VHR Worldview-2 images. The Worldview-2 images were dated May 19th, 2011, October 10th, 2011, January 22th, 2012 and July 6th, 2012. The October and July images were considered in the second stage. The map was produced at 2 meters spatial resolution and projected in WGS84/UTM33N. The map has binary values where value 1 indicates Ailanthus altissima pixels whereas value 0 indicates No Ailanthus altissima. The Overall Accuracy (OA) of the map was: OA=97.96%±0.14%. [1] C. Mixing and ordering behaviour in manganocolumbite-ferrocolumbite solid solution: a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study

    No full text
The structural changes upon cation substitution in natural AB2O6 columbites have been studied by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Most of the structural variations across the MnNb2O6- FeNb2O6 solid solution in completely ordered samples can be simply understood in terms of ionic radii. The substitution of Fe for the larger Mn cation causes a linear decrease of all unit-cell parameters. Going from manganocolumbite to ferrocolumbite the site A is reduced in volume and becomes less distorted. The oxygen cage around the cation assumes a more regular arrangement since the mismatch between A and B chains decreases. At the same time, the divalent cation moves toward the barycenter of the polyhedron. The B site, which is not involved in the Fe-Mn cation substitution, maintains its geometry unchanged. Ordering of divalent cations at A sites and pentavalent cations at B sites causes linear variations of a and c cell parameters. A non-linear behavior is shown by the b cell parameter that shows a minimum at order parameter Qm ∼ 0.7. A discontinuity at this Qm value is also shown by other structural parameters. Cation ordering also causes volume variations of the two octahedral sites as a consequence of the different ionic radii of the various species. Octahedral bond-length distortion parameters show that the B site is in general more distorted than the A site; distortion of the B site increases with ordering due to higher cation-cation repulsion along the B octahedral chain and to the second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) effect. Octahedral chains respond to modiÞ cations of the polyhedra by folding along the common edge

Catalytic formation of C(sp3)-F bonds via decarboxylative fluorination with mechanochemically-prepared Ag2O/TiO2 heterogeneous catalysts

    No full text
Mechanochemically-prepared, Ag2O-containing solid materials, are shown to be efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of C(sp3)-F bonds via decarboxylative fluorination. Five catalytic cycles without loss of intrinsic activity could be performed with the optimal catalyst, composed of 1 wt% Ag2O supported on TiO2 (P25), despite the challenging conditions. The catalyst is easily prepared from the corresponding oxides in 20 minutes by simple mechanical mixing methods. In addition to ease of separation and re-use, the turnover numbers obtained over the solid catalyst are over one order of magnitude higher than those obtained with the state-of-the-art homogeneous catalyst, AgNO3, under otherwise identical conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first true heterogeneous catalyst for the selective formation of C(sp3)-F bonds with electrophilic fluorine donors, representing a major breakthrough in the field of catalytic fluorination
