Summary: Text structures and prior knowledge The purpose of this experiment was to show a differential effect of two types of textual structures (causal and teleological) on text comprehension with subjects of different levels of expertise (novices, intermediates and experts) in a domain describing three functions of the text-editor «Microsoft Word». We assumed an interaction between text structure and prior knowledge. Experts performed better than the two other levels of expertise, with the exception of cued recall, and this effect depended on the semantic text structure. Additionally, the results showed the existence of an intermediate effect in the recall of the causal text and emphazised the necessity to study the representation elaborated in relation with learners' prior knowledge. Summary : The role of modality and organization in learning spatial information The main goal of this research was to investigate the effects of two factors on the construction of spatial representations : the modality of presentation of spatial information (Spatial configuration versus Text) and the type of organization of this information (Linear versus Non Linear). In a preliminary experiment, we examined the internal structure of subjects' descriptions of features of an imaginary island. The results showed that most subjects organized linearly their descriptions. We used these findings in our experiment investigating which conditions allow the construction of spatial representations. After learning the content of an imaginary island, subjects had to judge the location of the items they had learned previously. Following our hypotheses, the main results showed that the quality of the spatial model elaborated depends on the modality of information, and that the effects of organization on the quality ofthe spatial model vary according to the modality of information. Key words : spatial situation model, spatial representations, organization of information, modality of information.Résumé Le but de cette recherche est d'étudier quelles sont les conditions de présentation des informations (mode et organisation) qui permettent la construction de représentations spatiales. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Individual differences and emotional inferences during reading comprehension

This paper investigated readers’ representations of the main protagonist’s emotional status in short narratives, as well as several mental factors that may affect these representations. General and visuo-spatial working memory, empathy and simulation were investigated as potential individual differences in generating emotional inferences. Participants were confronted with narratives conveying information about the protagonist’s emotional state. We manipulated each narrative’s target sentence according to its content (emotional label vs. description of the behavior associated to the emotion) and to its congruence to the story (matching vs. mismatching). The results showed that globally the difference between reading times of congruent and incongruent target sentences was bigger in the behavioral than in the emotional condition. This pattern was accentuated for high visuo-spatial working memory participants when they were asked to simulate the stories. These results support the idea that mental models may be of a perceptual nature and may more likely include behavioral elements than emotion labels per se, as suggested earlier by Gygax et al. (2007)

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The human conceptual system is known to contain two main types of concepts: concrete and abstract. Abstract concepts such as opinion or determination express the sequences of relations between different entities. They also manifest the internal and introspective states of existence that characterize the human consciousness. The semantic representation and organization of abstract concepts has received very little attention in the cognitive psychology literature over the past decades, whereas the vast majority of studies have been dedicated to concrete concepts. Previous research on abstract concepts has explained how they are conceptually represented by focusing on their differences from concrete concepts i.e., the concreteness effect. Current theories of grounded cognition such as the Perceptual Symbol Systems Theory propose that situational knowledge and experiences could play a key role in how people simulate, understand and use abstract concepts. Our aim was to assess the principles that underlie the conceptual structure, organization and representation of abstract concepts within the cognitive system. Four series of behavioural experiments using categorization and similarity judgment tasks were designed to investigate the role of situational information and thematic organization in the processing of abstract concepts. The results indicated that the co-occurrences and the experiencing of unrelated abstract concepts in relevant situations significantly influenced the emergence of novel thematic reorganizations between the concepts compared to baseline. Thus, suggesting the central role that thematic reorganization and situational information play in the conceptual representation of abstract concepts

Distinction between two processes : inhibition and Suppression as function of irrelevant spatial information and inappropriate spatial information

The objective of this research is to study an aspect of comprehension text; the construction of the mental representation and the preservation of coherence, according to working memory capacities of the reader. To understand a text, the reader is brought to elaborate a mental representation of the situation evoked by this one (i.e., the model of situation). To this aim, the reader should put in relation the information in the course of treatment with those handled earlier and delete information became irrelevant to maintain the coherence of the meaning (Kintsch, 1998; Gernsbacher, 1990). Memorial skills are thus essential in the implementation of this coherence. Besides, this research of coherence should be made from several dimensions of the text, namely the spatiality, the temporality, the causality, and the emotion (Zwaan, Langston and Graesser, on 1995).Our first objective was to highlight the existence of the mechanism of suppression of the spatial information during the construction of the mental representation. For that purpose, we presented texts containing two spatial informations, one of this information was developed in a preferential way (the other one becoming irrelevant) and we made vary the quantity of textual data presented according to texts. This protocol allowed us to test the inhibition, and the suppression of this spatial information. To study the link between working memory capacities and the process of suppression, we used a test that evaluates the capacity of the working memory of the participants (i.e. Corsi’s blocks). Our second objective was to test in a more complete way the implementation of inhibition and suppression processes during reading of a text according to the type of presented information (relevant, irrelevant and incoherent with the story of the text).Obtained results allowed us to confirm the existence of a process of inhibition which intervenes for the incoherent information of a text, and a mechanism of suppression occurring for the irrelevant information. The inconsistent information seems to be inhibited at first, before definitively eliminated by the mental representation of the text. These two processes are necessary to the construction of a coherent model of situation of a text
