Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Esses resultados são discutidos à luz de um modelo de controle distribuído por um sistema sensório-motor organizado hierarquicamenteDifferent questions regarding visuomotor integration in the control of anticipatory timing tasks were investigated in two experiments: a) minimal latency period for carrying cut adjustments on the response, b) amount of practice and visuomotor control specificity, and c) effect of movement time and visual information availability on the accuracy and consistence of motor responses. The subjects participated voluntary in the experiments. They aged from 17 to 30 years (n=25) in Experiment 1, and from 23 to 38 years (n=21|) in Experiment 2. The tasks employed through the experiments were pressing of a hand-heid switch, with fast reaction or timing demands, or stroking a little foam ball with a badminton bat. Experiment 1 was carried out to compare visual reaction time (VRT) to minimal latency period to use visual information in the control of an anticipatory timing task. In the Experiment 2 conditions of short movement time (pressing a hand-held switch) and full vision of stimulus displacement (CVC group), long movement time (stroking the foam ball with the bat) and full vision (LVC group), and long movement time with occlusion of the last 302 ms of the stimulus displacement (LOC group) were compared. Comparisons were made prior to practicing the rasks, after 250 trials, and following 1000 trials, analyzing the performance in four conditions of vision: full vision, occlusion of the last 101 ms of the stimulus displacement, occlusion of the last 201 ms, and occlusion of the last 302 ms. Both results of Experiment 1 and pre-test of Experiment 2 indicated that without previous practice yhe minimum latency period to profit from visual information in anticipatory timing tasks was higher than VRT. (Continue)(Continuation) Experiment 2 showed a different relationship after the practice phase, in which a better integration between motor control and visual afference seems to have taken place, bringing about a performance decline with occlusion of a period as short as the last 101 ms of the stimulus displacement. An inverse effect was observed on LOC group, which had its performance impaired by augmented visual information availability after task acquisition, suggesting the development of a visuomotor specificity through the practice with a particular display. The equivalent performance of all groups at the end of the practice phase is another finding that deserves to be pointed out, indicating that a synchronizatory task can be carried out from a mental representation of the stimulus displacement without performance impairment. Finally, no significant differences between CVC and LVC groups were observed, showing that a longer movement time did not contribute to the production of more accurate responses. The results are discussed in the light of a distributed control hierarchically organized sensorimotor system mode

Conclui-se que CM está associada à APFRS, mas isto depende do critério de analise utilizado para avaliar ambos os construtosThe present study aimed to investigate the relationship between motor coordination (CM) and physical fitness related to health (APFRS) of schoolchildren from 6 to 13 years of age of both sexes testing the following hypotheses: 1) Gross CM results are related to the gross results of the APFRS tests; 2) CM motor quotient is related to the sum of APFRS tests in which schoolchildren are classified as apt; 3) CM levels evaluated by QM are related to the sum of APFRS tests in which schoolchildren are classified as apt; and 4) A classification of CM based on QM levels are related to the state of apt/inapt in the APFRS tests. 531 schoolchildren (252 males and 279 females) divided into the initial age group of 6-8 years (n=175), the intermediate age group of 9-10 years (n=186), and the advanced age group of 11 -13 years (n=170) were evaluated by the KTK and the Fitnessgram battery tests. The results revealed that for hypothesis 1, there was a moderate association between the gross results of MC and the gross results of the following APFRS tests: mile run, abdominal muscular endurance, arms muscular endurance and trunk flexibility in all groups; in relation to hypothesis 2, a moderate association between CM motor quotient and the number of schoolchildren classified as apt in the APFRS test was confirmed only in the advanced age group of 11-13 years (rô = 0.32); concerning hypothesis 3, a weak association between CM level and the number of APFRS tests in which schoolchildren were classified as apt was confirmed also only in the advanced age group of 11-13 years (rô = 0.26); and in relation to hypothesis 4, being classified as expected/unexpected CM does not relate to being apt/inapt in the 4 tests of APFRS in none of the investigated groups. Therefore, it is concluded that CM is associated to APFRS but this depends on the criteria used to evaluate both construct

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

THE CONTEXTUAL INTERFERENCE EFFECT IN THE ACQUISITION OF THE SKILL SERVE IN VOLLEYBALL IN CHILDREN: TEMPORARY, LASTING OR NON-EXISTENT?

According to the contextual interference effect (CIE), practicing several motor skills under random practice or high contextual interference practice (abcbcacbabac) facilitates retention and transfer in comparison to practicing the same tasks under blocked practice or low contextual interference practice (aaaabbbbcccc). This learning phenomenon has led to a considerable amount of research. However, no definite trend in the results has been found, which makes its acceptance in the motor learning domain questionable. By extending the transfer phase (increasing the number of transfer trials), the aim of this study was to assess whether the CIE is temporary, lasting or non-existent. Accordingly, based on the scores of the pre-test, thirty-six schoolgirls (12 -14 years of age) were allocated to either a blocked or a random group. The acquisition tasks were the underhand and overhand volleyball serves, to two targets placed on the floor. The transfer task was the round house (Asian floater) volleyball serve to a third target. All serves were performed five meters away from the net. The experimental design consisted of four phases: pre-test (eight trials), acquisition (288 trials), transfer (84 trials) and retention (12 trials). The results of precision and movement pattern measures did not provide support to the CIE, since there were no significant statistical differences between the groups in any of the phases. The structure of variable practice did not affect the performance of the new task. Likewise, there was no support to the MAGILL & HALL (1990) hypothesis that, when task variations involve learning of different motor programs, the benefit of random practice over blocked practice would be found. Moreover, the present study reinforced the trend that the CIE does not take place in children as well as with field tasks

Effect of the level of performance stabilization and the type of perturbation in the adaptive process of motor learning

    No full text
Contudo, ainda se faz necessário investigar como ocorre o processo adaptativo em outras tarefas em função de diferentes tipos de perturbação, bem como em tarefas que tenham maior validade ecológicaThe purpose of this study was to investigate how the level of performance stabilization and the type of perturbation affect the adaptive process of motor learning. Three experiments composed of two phases (stabilization and adaptation) were carried out in a complex task of coincident timing. Three groups were arranged (n=15) in each experiment according to the \"three consecutive trial with error within a range of 30 ms\", and for super-stabilization was \"six blocks of three consecutive trials with error in a range of 30 ms\". In experiment I, individuals did not stabilize their performance (pre-stabilization) and were exposed to different types of perturbation: perceptive perturbation is less demanding than the two other perturbations. In experiment II, the stabilization of performance was achieved and, after that, the three types of perturbation were introduced. The results showed that the individuals could adapt themselves to the perceptive and motor perturbation with bigger changes in the skill structure for the latter. Individuals found the perceptive-motor perturbation to be most difficult to adapt. In experiment III, the super-stabilization was achieved and after that, the three types of perturbation were introduced. There were no performance differences in the adaptation phase, independent of the type of perturbation, but differences occurred in terms of changes in the skill structure: the perceptive-motor perturbation caused the biggest change, followed by the motor and, at last, the perceptive. (Continue)(Continuation) The measures of variability in the pre-stabilization indicated that changes in the macrostructure of the skill as a result of the perturbation, with no differences either in the variability of the microstructure of the skill or in the performance. With the stabilization of the performance, occurred changes both in the variability did not happen. In sum, the results showed that: 1) stabilization is a prerequisite for the adaptation but it depends upon when the perturbation is introduced and how much perturbation is introduced; 2) independent of the stabilization\'s level, the perceptive-motor perturbation constitutes higher level of perturbation than the level showed by motor and perceptive in separate. The level of motor perturbation was higher than that perceptive perturbation. Nevertheless, it is necessary to investigate how the adaptive process happens in other tasks as a function of the various types of perturbation, as well as tasks with higher ecological validit
