    The Data Exchange Protocol over Multi-chain Blockchain Using Zero-knowledge Proof

    The implementation of blockchain technology is becoming popular among cyber-physical systems. However, the current solutions suffer from scalability and privacy issues. In this position paper, we leverage zero-knowledge proof and multichain technology to propose an efficient system for data transferring across different components. Each component may maintain a private chain storing its data, and the system acts as a relayer between different chains, in which multiple private chains are efficient for appending new data. Only encrypted data is transferred from a source chain to a destination chain. The relayer handles data transferring in two phases: send and receive, and the relayer keeps a Merkle tree of all sent data. In fact, it only transfers the data if the receiver can submit a valid zero-knowledge proof that proves the ownership of the data. The zero knowledge proof discloses nothing but the statement is true; therefore it protects anonymity for the data owners. This system is secure and satisfies relevant properties such as ledger indistinguishability, transaction non-malleability, and matchability

    The Internet Computer Protocol is a new generation blockchain that aims to provide better security and scalability than the traditional blockchain solutions. In this paper, this innovative distributed computing architecture is introduced, modeled and then simulated by means of an agent-based simulation. The result is a digital twin of the current Internet Computer, to be exploited to drive future design and development optimizations, investigate its performance, and evaluate the resilience of this distributed system to some security attacks. Preliminary performance measurements on the digital twin and simulation scalability results are collected and discussed. The study also confirms that agent-based simulation is a prominent simulation strategy to develop digital twins of complex distributed systems

    Identifying Degradation Indicators for Electric Vehicle Battery Based on Field Testing Data

    State of health estimation of battery is crucial to ensure the safety and durability of electric vehicles. This paper presents six methods to extract the battery health indicator from electric vehicle field testing data. The methods for extracting health indicators from the discharge cycle show the ability to cope with the variable driving condition. In total, 157 health indicators are extracted from the collected data. Pearson correlation coefficient and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient are used to measure the correlation between the health indicators and the state of health. The results suggest that health indicators extracted by the presented methods have high correlations to the battery state of health

    Monitoring cultural heritage buildings via low-cost edge computing/sensing platforms: The Biblioteca Joanina de Coimbra case study

    Climate change and higher level of pollutants are affecting our heritage affect the conservation abilities and endangering centuries old buildings and artifacts. Governments and conservation agencies alike are scrambling to monitor and prevent disasters that would result in the loss of precious cultural artifacts. Sensing technologies, on one side, and new restoration techniques on the other, are in being used in this effort however they result in high costs and complex installation logistics. In this paper we present a pollution monitoring study for the Biblioteca Joanina, a baroque library situated in University of Coimbra that has been inducted in the UNESCO world’s heritage list in 2013. In contrast with current practices the study has been conducted using a low-cost sensing platform, namely CANARIN II, built in a joint effort by the Sorbonne Université, the Macao Polytechnic Institute and the Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand). Our study shows that is possible to use low-cost platform for cultural heritage monitoring and preservation and how it can support decision makers in execute simple policy changes and yet achieve substantial impacts in the preservation efforts

    A Novel Fusion Approach Consisting of GAN and State-of-Charge Estimator for Synthetic Battery Operation Data Generation

    The recent success of machine learning has accelerated the development of data-driven lithium-ion battery state estimation and prediction. The lack of accessible battery operation data is one of the primary concerns with the data-driven approach. However, research on battery operation data augmentation is rare. When coping with data sparsity, one popular approach is to augment the dataset by producing synthetic data. In this paper, we propose a novel fusion method for synthetic battery operation data generation. It combines a generative, adversarial, network-based generation module and a state-of-charge estimator. The generation module generates battery operation features, namely the voltage, current, and temperature. The features are then fed into the state-of-charge estimator, which calculates the relevant state of charge. The results of the evaluation reveal that our method can produce synthetic data with distributions similar to the actual dataset and performs well in downstream tasks

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
