No full textM.Phil.This study attempts to integrate the two traditional communication theories, cultivation theory and inoculation theory. The theoretical framework of cultivated inoculation is proposed to explain how China’s propaganda machine persistently and systematically inoculates individuals to resist attitudinal changes from increasing mobility and globalization. Cultivated inoculation postulates that if the message system in media comprises threat and refutational preemption, exposure to the media in the long term produces resistance against impeding attack messages, therefore weakens persuasion effects from the opposite. Traditional media effect literature makes a distinction between mass media and digital media, which is less meaningful in China. The current study considers a dichotomy of domestic/overseas media to examine the effectiveness of propaganda and information manipulation efforts. Introducing exposure to criticism, political trust, societal trust, and national pride as mediators, this thesis employs path analysis to compare the impacts of domestic and overseas media on political orientations of mainland Chinese students in Hong Kong.Results show that domestic media use strengthens regime support while exposure to overseas media and overseas criticism attenuate regime support. Political trust, societal trust, and national pride significantly mediate the effects of media use on regime support. The study also tests whether cultivated inoculation confers resistance against future attacks or not. Results suggested that the mitigating role of overseas criticism is dampened among those who have higher level of cultivated threat. Yet, when cultivate threat is extremely high, exposure to overseas criticism reinforces support to the political system. The interaction effects of cultivated beliefs are not found. Research methods, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.本研究嘗試整合傳播學兩大理論傳統「涵化理論」與「防疫論」，提出「涵化防疫」這一理論框架，用以解釋中國宣傳機器是如何長期而系統地對個人施加「疫苗接種式」的影響，以抵禦日益增強的流動性與全球化對個人政治信念的影響。「涵化防疫」假定，如果媒體的訊息系統中含有「威脅」與「預先反駁」兩大要素，長期暴露在此系統下會增強對「敵對觀念」的抵抗力，削弱對方的說服效果。傳統的媒體效果研究通常將媒體分為大眾媒體與數字媒體，這一劃分在中國大陸意義有限。本文採用「國內-海外」的媒體二分法，檢驗宣傳機器與信息管控的成效。通過引入批評訊息、政治信任、社會信任與民族自豪感等中介變量，本文採用通徑分析的統計方法比較了國內與海外媒體及批評對在港內地生政治態度的影響。結果表明，國內媒體使用增強體制支持；海外媒體與批評則削弱體制支持。政治信任、社會信任與民族自豪感有效解釋了媒體使用、批評訊息與體制支持間的傳導機制。本文亦檢驗了「涵化防疫」是否有效激發受眾對說服訊息的抵抗。結果顯示，海外批評對政體支持的削弱作用會隨著涵化威脅的提升而衰減。而涵化威脅程度極高時，接觸海外批評反而會增強對體制的支持。沒有證據顯示涵化觀念有類似的調節作用。研究方法、局限及未來研究方向詳見正文。Tang, Lipei.Thesis M.Phil. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
