Attitudes and perceptions of university students towards calculus / Tang Howe Eng, Nor Hazizah Julaihi and Voon Li Li
This study seeks to examine university students’ attitudes and their perceptions on calculus education. Lecturers’ suggestions to remedy the current situation of calculus learning were also investigated. The instruments of this study consisted of three sets of questionnaires, aimed at collecting data regarding students’ attitudes and perceptions on calculus and lecturers’ suggestions. The respondents consisted of 278 full-time diploma students in a public university in Malaysia. The findings indicate that the students’ attitudes towards the Course of calculus according to gender were insignificant. However, there was a significant difference in the students’ attitudes towards
the Field of calculus between female and male students. Students of Pre-Calculus and Calculus I were found to be feeling, thinking, and behaving similarly about calculus. Their attitudes towards the Field of calculus among the four engineering and science programmes were significant.
After attempting 39.27% of the given questions, students’ perceptions on the difficulty of the questions remained the same, which was neither easier nor harder than they expected. Nevertheless, students’ perceptions changed
positively (questions more difficult than expected) in 19.45% of the questions and negatively (questions easier than expected) in 41.28% of the questions. The implications from these findings provided inputs to improve calculus
teaching and learning. Information regarding students’ attitudes toward calculus could help lecturers to design comprehensive calculus lessons that suit all kinds of students. Students also need to change their attitudes
towards calculus, for example by having a closer inspection of the exact nature of the calculus questions before attempting them
The relationship between personality and behavioural traits and entrepreneurs’ competitiveness / Dr Oriah Akir, Dr Tang Howe Eng and Senian Malie.
This study explores the elements of personality and / or behavioural traits that explain the entrepreneurs’ competitiveness; and come out with an extended model in addition to the existing body of knowledge relating to the field of entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs. Cross-sectional survey design is carried out to determine the best competitive entrepreneurial behaviourial model. The findings indicated that proactive trait made the largest contribution in explaining a competitive entrepreneur (β = 0.420, p = 0.000), next largest contributing factor was innovative (β = 0.286, p = 0.000), followed by networking (β = 0.103, p = 0.002), and then risk taking (β = 0.098, p = 0.018). This study also explores the motivating, success and challenging factors experienced by entrepreneurs in their business ventures. In conclusion, this study has the potential inputs and insights to managerial and decision-makers in sponsoring the financial / capital assistance to new entrepreneurs or even existing one to assess their capability, feasibility and the future growth of their business ventures
Misconceptions and errors in learning integral calculus / Voon Li Li, Nor Hazizah Julaihi and Tang Howe Eng
The paper presents the results of a case study examining students’ difficulties in the learning of integral calculus. It sought to address the misconceptions and errors that were encountered in the students’ work solution. In quantitative study, the marks obtained by 147 students of Diploma in Computer Science in advanced calculus examinations were used as a measurement to evaluate the percentages of errors. Further, qualitative study examined the types of errors performed by 70 diploma students of the advanced calculus courses in their on-going assessments. The students encountered more difficulties in solving questions related to improper integrals for standard functions (63.1 percentages of errors). The three techniques of integration, namely by parts, trigonometric substitution and partial fraction with combined percentage errors of 42.8 also contributed to this. The types of conceptual errors discovered are symbolic, standard functions recognition, property of integral and technique determination. The procedural errors are due to the confusion between differentiation and integration process while the technical errors have foreseen the students struggling with poor mathematical skills and carelessness. The results will thus be useful to Mathematics educators who are keen in designing functional teaching and learning instruments to rectify the difficulties and misconceptions problems experienced by calculus students
Disseminating effective use of mapping techniques in integral calculus / Nor Hazizah Julaihi, Voon Li Li and Tang Howe Eng
Integral Calculus has always been an issue to first year Engineering students in their Calculus courses in higher learning institutions. This paper studied mapping techniques in learning Integral Calculus. Fifty-three randomly selected first year Engineering respondents were asked to sit for a pre-test, then exposed to a treatment and finally sat for a post-test. The findings showed that there was a signifi cantly higher mean of post-test scores as compared to the mean of pre-test scores after the application of Integral Maps in their learning. The fi dings indicated that the mapping techniques had a positive effect on the respondents. The respondents were fascinated
with the applied bright colours in the maps. They were also fast in working out solutions as they exploited the layering design of the maps. All of the respondents would use or recommend the maps to their friends. The fi ndings
indicate that mapping techniques have potential for applications in the teaching and learning of Integral Calculus
Kajian impak Pesta Kaul Mukah 2014 / Dr. Tang Howe Eng, Haji Khalik Haji Ibrahim & Noor Emma Shamsuddin
STestMAP as an alternative for significance test selection / Tang Howe Eng... [et al.]
One major problem faced by many researchers and students when confronted with the hypothesis testing procedure is to select the relevant statistical test for the purpose of calculating the test statistics. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of STestMAP as a tool to help in the selection of the significance test. It also aims at investigating the flexibility afforded by the STestMAP procedure in catering to the needs of both linear and non-linear users. The research design divides the study into two phases: Phase I where quantitative analysis dominates while Phase II involves qualitative analysis. Four instruments, which consisted of prior knowledge test, pre-test, post-test and interview, were adopted and administered. Data collection was carried out through paper-and-pencil tests and interviews. Both quantitative (descriptive and inferential analyses) and qualitative data analysis techniques were utilized. In Malaysia, a random sample of 49 respondents from two public universities in Sarawak, Malaysia was chosen out of which 6 respondents were purposively selected and interviewed. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed that there was a statistically significant difference in the pre-test and the post-test for the control group, Z=-3.978, p=0.001 as well as for the experimental group, Z=-4.275, p=0.001. In comparing the gains between the experimental and the control groups, however, the test indicated insignificant difference in the gain scores, Z=-0.142, p=0.887. In Singapore, 29 respondents were selected on a voluntary basis from one of the public universities. Eight respondents were purposively selected and interviewed. Paired t- Test showed that there was significant gain in the pre and post-tests (t=7.678,p=0.001). For both Malaysia and Singapore, a more detailed analysis with programme of study and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) as independent variables
