Spatiotemporal Assessment of GHG Emissions and Nutrient Sequestration Linked to Agronutrient Runoff in Global Wetlands

    No full text
Wetlands play a key role in regulating global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions but anthropogenic impacts on nutrients may severely alter this balance. Recent assessments indicate that almost 22% of the global wetland area may be affected by agricultural runoff. In this work, we developed and applied a dynamic mechanistic reaction network model of soil organic matter linking the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) cycles at 0.5° × 0.5° spatial resolution across the globe. The model was used to estimate GHG emissions and nutrient sequestration rates in wetlands, driven by environmental stressors including N, P, and S fertilization. Wetland annual GHG emissions are estimated to be 136 ± 12.5 Tg C-CH4, 589 ± 45.8 Tg C-CO2, and 0.3 ± 0.04 Tg N-N2O; in contrast, C, N, and S annual sequestration rates are estimated to be 576 ± 88.1 Tg C, 20 ± 4.4 Tg N, and 7.4 ± 0.8 Tg S, between 2000 and 2017. N fertilization inputs were responsible for 13% N2O emissions in wetlands in the Northern Hemisphere, while tropical wetlands were major reservoirs for C, N, and S. Temperature, net primary productivity, and methanogenic microorganisms exert the major control on GHG emissions. Wetland CH4 and CO2 emissions were found to have a hysteretic relationship with seasonal soil temperature, but not N2O. A global-scale assessment is pivotal for best nutrient management practices, reducing nutrient losses, and controlling gas emissions

Aquesta feina ha donat lloc a una publicació (Carreño et al. SNP variants within the vanilloid TRPV1 and TRPV3 receptor genes are associated with migraine in the Spanish population. Am J Med Genet B Neuropsychiatr Genet. 2012). A la primera (Serra et al. A mutation in the first intracellular loop of CACNA1A prevents P/Q channel modulation by SNARE proteins and lowers exocytosis. El segon (Carreño et al. Acute striatal necrosis in hemiplegic migraine with the novo CACNA1A mutation. Headache. El tercer i últim treball (Carreño et al. Screening of the ATP1A2 and CACNA1A genes in patients with hemiplegic migraine: clinical, genetic and functional studies. [work in progress]) recull l'screening mutacional al gens ATP1A2 i CACNA1A en 19 pacients amb FHM. Es van identificar 5 mutacions prèviament descrites i dues mutacions noves.[eng] This Thesis is focused in migraine genetics, migraine is a prevalent neurological disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of headache. This research was divided in two areas according to the genetic basis of the disorders; on the one hand we studied the common migraine with a complex genetics, on the other hand we studied the rare mendelian forms of familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM). To understand more the genetic basis of the common migraine a case-control association study approach was used with candidate genes. For that purpose, around 550 patients with migraine and their corresponding control group were selected. In order to analyze their involvement in the genetic susceptibility to migraine, we chose genes encoding for channels of the heterogeneous superfamily of Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) which are known to be involved in the nociceptive pathway. In the particular case of FHM, a monogenic form of the disorder, there are three genes known to be involved in the FHM (CACNA1A, ATP1A2 and SCN1A), whose encoded proteins are playing a relevant role in the neurotransmission of the glutamate. Functional analysis of the mutations causing FHM have shown ultimately an increased neurotransmission release. CACNA1A previous studies reveled a gain-of-function effect from FHM mutations, unlike mutations on ATP1A2 that present a loss-of-function effect. Our work consisted on identifying mutations in patients by direct sequencing. If the mutations were interesting enough vector constructions were generated for functional studies in eukaryotic cells. This work gave rise to three publications: First; the identification of a change that modulates the function of the CACNA1A channel. This study contributes to explain the genetic contribution in the clinical heterogeneity of one family and to know more about the molecular mechanism of the P/Q calcium channel. Second; a report of a patient that presents an acute stratial necrosis that had clinical relevance because of the early onset of the neurological symptoms previous to the hemiplegic attacks. Third; a mutational screening of ATP1A2 and CACNA1A genes in 19 patients with FHM. 5 previously described mutations and two new mutations were found. Functional studies were carried out for the newly mutations

    No full text
The aim of this study is to examine the contents of men's lifestyle magazines such as Maxim, Esquire, FHM, and one women's lifestyle magazine Glanc. The author used two analytical procedures: qualitative analysis by experts group and quantitative content analysis of sentences in the selected articles of the chosen magazines. The analysis pointed out the differences between the perception of content and the actual content. If the reader has some impression of the text, it does not mean that a more detailed analysis of sentences will reach the same conclusion. Effect of text is highly individual matter - this thesis came to the conclusion that although men's lifestyle magazines can be controversial for some people, upon closer examination the magazines cannot be clearly labeled as chauvinistic, cynical, ironic or tabloid. The author devoted to these categories in detail in the quantitative part of the analysis. Key words: Maxim, FHM, Esquire, Glanc, journal, magazine, lifestyle, content analysis, theme, interview, report, medium, tabloid, chauvinism, irony, cynicis

The Impact of Business Unit Strategy, Structure and Technical Innovativeness on Change in Management Accounting and Control Systems at the Business Unit Level: An Empirical Analysis

    No full text
This study tests the hypothesis that business unit strategy and business unit structure affect change in a business unit's Management Accounting & Control System (MACS). Business units are parts of a larger 'whole' organization, such as departments, teams, strategic groups or divisions. Change in MACS has been assessed by asking managers to estimate the number of changes that has taken place in their business unit's MACS over a two-year time period. Using data from a survey amongst 61 business unit managers in the Netherlands, the study suggests that the costing & transfer pricing and reward system are relatively 'resistant to change'. The results also indicate that the administrative capacity of a business unit is the main driver of change in MACS. Finally, business unit strategy and business unit structure affect change in specific components of MACS at the business unit level, apparently depending on whether the change in MACS facilitates or influences managerial decisions. Australian ecosystems, particularly wetlands, are facing new and extreme threats due to climate change, land use, and other human interventions. However, more fundamental knowledge is required to understand how nutrient turnover in wetlands is affected. In this study, we deployed a mechanistic biogeochemical model of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S) cycles at 0.25∘× 0.25∘ spatial resolution across wetlands in Australia. Our modeling was used to assess nutrient inputs to soil, elemental nutrient fluxes across the soil organic and mineral pools, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in different climatic areas. In the decade 2008–2017, we estimated an average annual emission of 5.12 Tg-CH4, 90.89 Tg-CO2, and 2.34 × 10−2 Tg-N2O. Temperate wetlands in Australia have three times more N2O emissions than tropical wetlands as a result of fertilization, despite similar total area extension. Tasmania wetlands have the highest areal GHG emission rates. C fluxes in soil depend strongly on hydroclimatic factors; they are mainly controlled by anaerobic respiration in temperate and tropical regions and by aerobic respiration in arid regions. In contrast, N and S fluxes are mostly governed by plant uptake regardless of the region and season. The new knowledge from this study may help design conservation and adaptation plans to climate change and better protect the Australian wetland ecosystem

¿A dónde vamos?, Y ¿Cómo llegamos? This study was carried out at Fundación Hermano Miguel FHM, located in the north of the city of Quito, is a non-profit organization that provides comprehensive rehabilitation services to people with some type of disability, especially of limited economic resources. This organization has a strategic plan defined years ago, have been updating, but the foundation has experienced a stagnation in its growth, as well as many other organizations in Ecuador. According to bibliography reviewed this is attributed for the most part to the fact that organizations do not efficiently apply strategic management. The objective of this work is the analysis of the strategic administration of the FHM, focusing on its main components: current strategic planning, current operational plan and its execution. This is done on the basis of the three questions that author (Thompson et al, 2012) suggests, where are we? Where do we go? And how do we get there? The result of this work establishes a different strategic planning, that allows to reach the vision raised. For this purpose, its Integral Scoreboard is proposed. The proposal of the strategic plan is made from the external environment analysis applying the method of the seven questions proposed by (Thompson et al, 2012).Mejía Guzmán, Kléber Hernán, directo
