Multi-objective optimization of the inter-story isolation system used as a structural TMD

    No full text
Inter-story isolation system (IIS) is increasingly being sought to add floors on top of existing buildings while controlling their base shear forces. One of the main issues with this application is the need to control the drift between the two structural parts and the acceleration of the superstructure, while optimizing the substructure performance. Therefore, this study investigates the use of the IIS as a structural Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), proposing a specific multi-objective optimization approach and providing new design equations for the IIS parameters. Unlike conventional TMD approaches, which focus on the performance of the primary structure (i.e., substructure), the proposed approach aims to consider the overall structural response. The optimal solutions obtained are then compared with the consistent ones currently available in the literature. Finally, time-history analyses of three simple case study structures are performed to validate these optimized solutions. The results demonstrate the potential of the IIS in improving the seismic performance of the substructure, as well as the possibility of limiting the isolation drifts and superstructure accelerations according to specific needs

Mechanism study on the effect of floor rotation angle on supported tuned mass damper system of high-rise structure

    No full text
The bending deformation of the super high-rise structures will cause floor rotation angle, and thus affect the vibration reduction effect of the supported tuned mass damper (TMD) system. This paper proposes a motion equation of the TMD control system with the effect of floor rotation angle. Firstly, a finite element model of the supported TMD control system was established by ETABS. Secondly, the formation and floor rotation angle parameters of the structure were obtained by ETABS modal analysis. Then, the structures ETABS model is simplified into a multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) model based on the dynamic characteristics of the structure. This paper also presents an evaluation index of the effect of floor rotation angle on the supported TMD system and a supported TMD control system is selected as a simulation example. The relationship between the floor rotation angle coefficient and the TMD parameters is later parametric analyzed. Finally, experiments were designed to verify the effect of floor rotation angle on the supported TMD control system. The experimental results show that the relationship between the rotation angle of the first formation floor and the generalized displacement of the first formation of the assumed structure is close to linear. Therefore, the effect of floor rotation angle of the structure is highly recommended to be considered as an important factor for the design of the supported TMD control system for super high-rise structures

Evaluation of optimal FVDs for inter-storey isolation systems based on surrogate performance models

Inter-storey seismic isolation is increasingly gaining attention. One of the main related issues is the need to limit the relative displacement between substructure and superstructure, while maintaining a good seismic performance of the superstructure. As shown in some studies, fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) mounted in isolation systems are effective in reducing isolator deflection but can be harmful by amplifying inter-storey drifts and floor accelerations. Additionally, the effectiveness of FVDs for inter-storey applications was investigated only recently, and specific approaches for their optimisation and performance evaluation are missing. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for the optimal multi-objective design of FVDs, based on the definition of appropriate surrogate response models, which allows for rationally comparing the FVD effects for a wide range of dampers and structures. In particular, the optimal FVD parameters are provided in a dimensionless form, so that they can be predicted by design equations of general validity within the range of the structures analysed. This method is applied to a stock of regular structures with various vibration periods of superstructure, isolation and substructure, examining a linear and a non-linear isolation system and a set of natural records, in order to comprehensively assess the effects of FVDs and their non-linearity on the seismic performance of these structures. Finally, prediction models of optimal FVD parameters are provided based on the results obtained and are applied to three case studies as an example

Improving the seismic performance of staircases in building structures with a novel isolator

A staircase provides the main escape way from a building in an emergency. Unfortunately, it may suffer severe damages or even collapse during an earthquake. For improving the seismic performance of staircases, this paper proposes an innovative staircase isolator with the features of lightweight, cost-effective and ease of construction and replacement, which is formed by suitable engineering plastic shims between rubber layers. A connection construction scheme is also proposed for the isolated staircase. Systematic performance tests have been carried out to characterize the isolator in terms of mechanic behavior and ultimate states. The test results show that mechanical properties of the proposed staircase isolator are excellent and suitable for staircase in building structure. In order to investigate the influence of staircase on building structural responses, time history analyses of a typical building structure without staircase (WS), with fixed staircase (FS) and with isolated staircase (IS) are conducted and compared within the environment of SAP2000. Results show that staircase isolation can effectively eliminate the diagonal bracing effect of staircase slab and make structural components uniformly stressed. When the novel isolator is employed for staircase in a building structure, there is no vulnerable position in staircase and the performance of staircase in building structure can be greatly enhanced

Optimal parameters of rotational inerter double tuned mass damper for different excitation and response combinations

    No full text
The Rotational Inerter Double Tuned Mass Damper (RIDTMD) is a vibration mitigation device derived by substituting the damping element in a conventional Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) with an inerter-based system. Under the same tuned mass ratio condition, RIDTMD has better vibration damping effectiveness than TMD. However, it is difficult to obtain the analytical solution of RIDTMD optimal parameters, which severely limits the application of RIDTMD in the engineering field. To address this problem, this study utilizes the Genetic Algorithm-Nonlinear Programming (GA-NLP) algorithm to obtain the analytical solution of RIDTMD, and the optimal parameters formulation of RIDTMD is given by numerical fitting technique. Under random force excitation, the optimal parameters of the RIDTMD are obtained based on optimization criteria H2 and H∞, with the displacement and acceleration of primary structure serving as the optimization objectives, respectively. The same method is used to obtain the optimal parameters of RIDTMD under base displacement excitation. Finally, the validity of the optimal parameters of RIDTMD was verified through frequency-domain analysis and time-domain analysis

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
