The first incarnation of this exhibition was presented at the MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from July 19, 2017, to February 14, 2018. The exhibition featured artworks from 28 artists either from the Patani region in southern Thailand or those who were artistically inspired by the history and culture of that area

Excerpt: The exhibition Between Worlds: Raden Saleh and Juan Luna was held at the National Gallery of Singapore from November 16, 2017, to March 11, 2018. On display were over 100 artworks from the two artists, brought together for the very first time, and also likely the most comprehensive ever displayed for each artist.1 In both breadth and depth, the scale of the exhibition was a momentous one. Transitioning Adult Education Students into Community College
Thesis (Ph.D.), College of Education, Washington State UniversityAt both a national and state level there is a growing need for skilled workers in the labor force. Educating low skilled adults is one way to address this need. Adult education programs teach low skilled adults basic academic skills to prepare them for work and life in U.S. society. Until recently little attention was paid to transitioning students from adult education programs into college. Since 2004 the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) has led colleges across the state in launching multiple initiatives designed to help transition adult education students into college programs. In this exploratory study, the author investigated elements of a transition effort at the Grandview Campus of Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC). He specifically sought to determine the relationship between the number of students transitioning from the YVCC adult education program into college classes and the campus climate, student support services, college orientation activities, enrollment in specific transition classes, student age, student gender and student ethnicity. Using the results of correlation and regression analyses coupled with qualitative data from focus groups, the author found that certain support services, some orientation activities, student age, student gender and enrollment in transition classes were related to students transitioning. Additionally, the author concluded that elements of campus climate, college faculty, individualized attention from college employees, support from fellow students, and family support also had an impact on students transitioning.Department of Educational Leadership, Washington State Universit
Mentoring Programs in Small Districts: Helping New Teachers Thrive
Thesis (Ph.D.), College of Education, Washington State UniversityNew teachers continue to leave the profession at high rates although retention rates vary from school to school, districtto district, and state to state. Many districts have implemented mentoring programs to improve retention of and support for new teachers in their schools. Often these models rely on full-time release mentors, which is prohibitive for small districts in terms of cost and personnel. The author studied five small districts that used published standards to create and implement mentoring programs that fit district needs and resources. In this qualitative study, the researcher identified three areas of significance to the mentoring programs: Importance of relationships, becoming part of the profession, and implementation of a well developed plan. Implications for other small districts planning to implement a mentoring program and impacts of Adult Learning Theory on designing a mentoring program are also discussed.Department of Educational Leadership, Washington State Universit

Unauthorised use of the trademark logo on social media on a massive scale has led to frequent legal conflicts between trademark holders, social media providers and internet users and legal uncertainty. The thesis concludes that trademark infringement and dilution laws in the U.S. and EU are inadequate to solve this problem. The trademark logo on social media should be protected against unauthorised use, even though it is not used to sell the good or service the trademark indicates, but is used in a commercial environment. Two premises for any solution are that first the enforcement should be made automatic, since litigation on a case-by-case basis is not scalable, and second that the safe harbour provisions for online service providers, that aggravate the problem, should be substituted for strict liability. The trademark logo can be seen as the personification of the trademark holder, and one can argue that the stability of the trademark logo is not only in the interest of the trademark holder but also of society at large. One can argue that trademark dilution already provides a kind of moral right of integrity for the trademark logo. However, this right is limited to trademark logos that are considered famous or have a reputation, and, moreover, that are used in a commercial way. This thesis argues that also the trademark logo that did not reach the requested level of fame or reputation and is used in a non-commercial way should also be protected against unauthorised use on social media. Therefore the moral right of integrity is proposed for the trademark logo. Until the law will be amended to include a moral right of integrity for the trademark logo, this thesis suggests to implement proactive solutions in the walled gardens of social media as a testing ground for potential legislation. How to Think about Antisemitism
Almost two decades ago, Daniel Goldhagen wrote a book about the holocaust that changed the entire discussion. For the first time, people were forced to consider how everyday Germans influenced the genocide. Since then, he’s written more books on related topics and watched as global antisemitism got worse and worse, publishing, finally, a powerful study called The Devil that Never Dies. On this episode Danny and Jack have a wide-ranging discussion about antisemitism itself, Israel, the use of language to describe Jews, and even Microsoft Word!
Daniel Goldhagen is the author numerous books, including The Devil That Never Dies: The Rise and Threat of Global Antisemitism; A Moral Reckoning: The Role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust and Its Unfulfilled Duty of Repair, and the #1 international bestseller Hitler’s Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust, which has been published in fifteen languages, and named by Time one of the two best non-fiction books of 1996 and by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitungas “the most spectacular nonfiction success of this year.” He received a Ph.D. from Harvard University and was a professor in their Government and Social Studies departments until he became an independent scholar. He is currently affiliated with Harvard’s Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies.

Novel technologies in the investigation of the neuronal dynamics of mouse forelimb movements
Ph.D.Innovative technologies are crucial to advancing our understanding of the brain. In vivo two-photon fluorescence microscopy is a powerful tool that enables observation of the living brain. When combined with fluorescent functional indicators, this technique can be used to acquire chronic recording of large ensembles of neural activity in an awake behaving head-fixed animal, and can simultaneously exploit a wealth of transgenic tools to dissect structural connectivity and plasticity within neural circuits. Designing and constructing a custom microscope provides the flexibility to engineer towards specific imaging requirements, and the freedom to augment its functionality with novel features.A universal challenge for in vivo optical imaging is to overcome the intrinsic light-scattering properties of tissue, which severely attenuates excitation photons and randomly disperses photons emitted by a sample, resulting in severely limited imaging depths. To overcome this issue, a method was developed which employs Monte Carlo ray tracing to simulate photon trajectories through scattering medium, combined with an iterative algorithm to assess the collection efficiency of all possible lens configurations in a constrained detector structure, and arrive at an optimal model. Implementation of this model yielded superior imaging depths in vivo compared to a naïve design.To advance the system beyond its basic capabilities, a modular focal plane adjustment system driven by a pair of electronically-tuneable lenses was designed and implemented to enable high-speed dual-layer imaging at 15 Hz each, in tandem with the resonant scanning system without compromises in imaging resolution. Axial shift of up to 350 μm is achievable without any curvature of the focal plane, but with 35% reduction of the field-of-view along the Y-dimension. Demonstration of dual-layer imaging is performed in the mouse neocortex, simultaneously acquiring calcium transients from Layer 2/3 soma and Layer 1 apical dendrites.Experimental paradigms for testing animal behaviour must be adapted to comply with the head-fixated requirement of in vivo two-photon imaging. A novel 2 degree-of-freedom robotic manipulandum was developed to aid in the study of complex forelimb movements in mice. The robotic system is driven by a dedicated microcontroller that communicates with a PC-client to perform fully automated experiments, while remaining synchronized with other data acquisition modalities.C57BL/6 mice were trained to operate the robotic manipulandum in “centre-out” and two-segment path movements, while in vivo calcium imaging was performed, alternating between the caudal forelimb area (CFA) and rostral forelimb areas (RFA) of the motor cortex. Kirk, Robert Warren
Memorial Statement for Professor Robert Warren Kirk, D.V.M., Ph.D. (1922-2011) who was in general veterinary practice in several states after earning his DVM at Cornell in 1946. He returned to Cornell in 1952 and helped usher in a new age of pet health care at Cornell. In addition to being a superb teacher of veterinary students and postgraduate trainees, Dr. Kirk held a number of College administrative positions including head of the teaching hospital, director of the Small Animal Clinic, and chair of the Clinical Sciences Department. He was a prolific author that included many editions of Current Veterinary Therapy, Small Animal Dermatology, among other books. He was a founding member of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, past president of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology, and recipient of numerous professional awards. At the time of his retirement in 1985, he was one of the most decorated and widely-known small animal veterinarians in the world

Commercial navigation in the Greek and Roman world
textThe economic development of Greece and Rome hinged directly on the ability of commercial vessels to transport large volumes of goods across the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Archaeology has revealed the sizes, construction methods and cargos of these ships, but the navigational techniques that were employed to direct them from port to port remain unclear and elusive. In ancient literature, the oft-repeated themes of storm, shipwreck and death at sea led to the popular assumption among scholars that seafarers developed habits to minimize their exposure to this hostile element--hugging the shore to avoid the open sea, putting in at night, sailing only in summer, and using 'seafaring manuals' to help guide their way. While several recent studies have made some strides in overturning this overly simplistic view by highlighting aspects of navigation in certain areas and in certain periods, the 'standard model' lingers in both scholarly and popular imagination. This study offers a comprehensive review of the scattered textual and archaeological evidence pertaining to ancient seafaring and navigation, and a major reinterpretation of ancient commercial navigation in both periods. Chapters 2-3 explore the parameters of the maritime environment (coasts, winds, currents and visibility) and the human responses to them in the form of ships, seasonal rhythms and maritime corridors. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss the ways in which Greek and Roman sailing masters accounted for the fundamental requirements of navigation--the determination of direction, position, speed and distance--using wind roses as a 'compass' and various stars and star groups at night. Chapter 6 treats the question of whether seafarers used written guides or experience, or both, to help determine their position. Chapter 7 explores the historical figure of the sailing master himself and integrates a wide range of evidence to reconstruct the navigational routines of the crews of Alexandrian grain ships during the Roman imperial era. My research concludes that both coastal and open-sea sailing were matters of routine in the commercial sector, that commercial seafarers did indeed sail at night and employ the stars to deduce navigational information, that winter sailing was a widespread practice, and that crews employed navigational strategies to weather storms, usually successfully.Classic
