Extending execution tracing for mobile code security
The problem of protecting mobile code from both denial-of-service and state tampering attacks by malicious hosts are not well addressed in existing techniques for mobile code security. We propose a possible approach based on extending an existing mobile code security technique: cryptographic tracing. This is achieved through the introduction of a trusted third party, the verification server, which undertakes the verification of execution traces on behalf of the agent owner. The interaction between the verification servers and host platforms in the new protocol is outlined. Security properties of the protocol are verified by modelling the system in CSP and checking the resulting state transitions using the model checker FDR. Limitations of this approach to verification are then briefly discussed
Using learning objects technology in learning styles of higher education students / Tan Hock Chuan
LOOOP (Learning Objects in Object Oriented Programming) is an Electronic Learning (E-Learning) system that is developed in an object-oriented programming based on Learning Objects approach for higher education students. It uses an informational type of Learning Objects technology. The motivation of the project is to provide an alternative system for learners in support learning, provides supportiveness for learners in finding and recording information, provides communication tool for learners as well as to give immediate feedback promptly to learners who need information. This system does not only provide user with learning contents, but also provides information searching using the Internet via Google.com. A LOOOP complete system is a client-server application that executes on the client’s computer and retrieves its learning contents from server or from the client’s computer itself. This system is developed to support learners who want to study in a new study environment that transforms normal study style into digital environment. To develop fully, linear sequential model is selected as LOOOP project methodology. Visual Basic is the programming language used in the project implementation. Besides a client-server application, ActiveX control and DLL file are also created in this project for reusability and interoperability purpose. In addition, LOOOP language, which is a similar XML standard language, is used for data passing within database and the system. As a conclusion, a depth defined and designed of LOOOP includes its input, output and methodology are required to perform at preliminary stage to ensure LOOOP is developed in the correct path
Penglibatan orang Serani-Portugis dalam lapangan pernigaan dan perusahaan di Melaka Tengah / Michael Tan Hock Siew
Kajian ini merupakan satu percubaan untuk meneliti kegiatan ekonomi penduduk Serani-Portugis di Melaka Tengah. Kajian ini menunjukkan penglibatan mereka dalam bidang perniagaan masih terbatas di sekitar bandar Melaka dan permasalahan yang dihadapi memerlukan bantuan dan perkhidmatan sokongan pihak kerajaan. Kajian ini menunjukkan permasalahan dan potensi masa dean yang lebih baik jika ada usaha-usaha membantu daripada pihak kerajaan. Kajian ini dibahagikan kepada 6 bab. Bab I membincangkan tentang objektif kajian, bidang kajian dan kaedah kajian. Selain itu masalah kajian dan jenis-jenis perniagaan dan perusahaan juga turut dibincangkan. Bab II perkara yang dibincangkan ialah mengenai lalarbelakang peniaga Serani-Portugis di daerah Melaka Tengah. Ini bertujuan untuk mendapat sedikit gambaran mengenai profil diri peniaga dan hubungannya dengan usaha yang sedang mereka jalankan. Perkara-perkara yang diperkatakan merangkumi biodata responden. Dalam Bab Ill pula menyentuh tentang operasi perniagaan seperti jenis-jenis kedai dan taburannya, pengalaman dalam perniagaan dan kaitan pengalaman dengan kejayaan yang diperolehi oleh mereka. Di samping itu faktor permodalan dan sumber mdoal permulaan juga turut dikaitkan dalam bab ini. Bab IV pula membincangkan tentang latarbelakang perniagaan yang sedang mereka jalankan. Antaranya ialah pengurusan kedai-kedai perniagaan, pasaran dan pelanggan, penyelenggaraan perakaunan dan kemudahan kredit dari institusi-institusi kewangan. Perkara-perkara ini adalah penting sebagai faktor-faktor yang boleh memberikan kesan kepada keseluruhan perniagaan mereka. Seterusnya dalam Bab V disentuh tentang aspek masalah yang dihadapi oleh para peniaga. Kemudian beberapa cadangan dikemukakan bagi mengatasi masalah yang dihadapi itu. Antara masalah-masalah yang dihadapi itu ialah modal, masalah tenaga, masalah persaingan dan masalah bekalan. Masalah-masalah ini merupakan halangan kepada kemajuan perniagaan para peniaga. Bab VI merupakan bab penutup dan kesimpulan. Segala yang dibincangkan di dalam bab-bab yang lepas akan dibuat rumusan mengenai para peniaga di sini

Certificates for Mobile Code Security
The problem of protecting mobile code from malicious hosts is an important security issue, for which many solutions have been proposed. We describe a method to adapt an existing technique, execution tracing, to enhance its flexibility in deployment for a large scale mobile agent system. This is achieved through the introduction of a trusted third party, the verification server, which undertakes the verification of execution traces on behalf of the platform launching the agent. The server constructs a certificate that testifies to the capability of a particular host platform to undertake the correct execution of a mobile agent. In this sense, the server assumes a role analogous of a Certificate Authority (CA) in a PKI. We briefly discuss the issues associated with such a framework
Mobile Code for Key Propagation
We introduce the concept of keylets, which are mobile code used to control the propagation of keys in a system, as well as a technique for mobile agent code security that involves encryption of partitioned code components. Keylets are used to support this technique by directing the distribution of keys that decrypt the encrypted components. Formalisation for keylet operations are presented, and a scenario illustrating the use of keylets to implement the technique for mobile agent code security is detailed
Trust relationships in a mobile agent system
The notion of trust is presented as an important component in a security infrastructure for mobile agents. A trust model that can be used in tackling the aspect of protecting mobile agents from hostile platforms is proposed. We define several trust relationships in our model, and present a trust derivation algorithm that can be used to infer new relationships from existing ones. An example of how such a model can be utilized in a practical system is provided
The adaptability of the indigenous bees, Apis cerana to top-bar hives in Sarawak / Ron Ah Goh @ Tan Hock Kheng
Beekeeping with indigenous bees, Apis cerana, in Sarawak is an aged-old tradition and passion among many of the rural communities. The use of the traditional log hives using cut out tree trunks, bark and local lumber still exist. The introduction of modern beekeeping using the Malaysian modified Langstroth hives with movable frame to the traditional beekeepers has met with limited success due to the high incidence of absconding. Therefore, there is a need to introduce more appropriate beekeeping technology such as the use of top-bar hives; commonly referred to as a transitional method of beekeeping. A 3x3x3 factorial experiment in a Complete Randomized Block Design (CRBD) was carried out to evaluate the adaptability of Apis cerana to top-bar hives. The research investigations conducted revealed three significant outcomes. Firstly, the comb space for Apis cerana in the coconut growing areas of Kota Samarahan was 28 mm. Secondly, a measuring device using an acrylic plastic grid incorporated with the use of a digital camera and computer made sampling for data collection more efficient and effective. Thirdly, the indigenous bees of Sarawak can adapt to the use of top-bar hives. Experimentation with three levels of comb-space, 25 mm, 28 mm and 32 mm, revealed that the appropriate comb space to be used for beehive design should be similar to the natural comb-space. Results revealed that the most appropriate comb-space was 28 mm and conclusively shown to be critical in the design of beehives. There were no burr-combs and subsequently nil stickiness among the frames or top-bars in hives with comb-space of 28 mm. The present adoption of the standard comb-space of 25 mm in Malaysian modified Langstroth hives could have been one of the reasons for the high frequency of indigenous bees to abscond. The findings also showed that adopting the correct comb space could reduce the infestation by wax moth. This subsequently can reduce the incidence of absconding and hence enhance the productivity of local honey production. The research conducted explicitly indicates that Apis cerana was able to adapt to the use of top-bar hives. There were no significant differences in the growth of the combs and the broods among the three types of hive designs tested. There was also no incidence of wax moth infestation and no absconding in the Malaysian modified Langstroth beehives with top-bar. The Malaysian modified Langstroth hive with top-bar of width 28 mm is therefore recommended as the most appropriate beehive design for beekeepers in rural Sarawak
