It distinguishes the research questions that require attention for the computation of a more situated design conversation, in terms of design actions and design interpretations. It presents an architecture for “more situated” systems and describes some examples of implementation. The limitations and complexities of what has been achieved are identified
Parametric and generative methods with building information modelling: Connecting BIM with explorative design modelling
The design of architecture, in practice, entails the collaboration of many disciplines each with their own set of tools and representations. Building Information Models aim to support interoperability between these disciplines. However current implementations require a lot of manual work involving translating parts from the various specialised descriptions to the common model format. Domain Specific Languages are a development from Information Technology that defines a mapping from the concepts used in one discipline to those used in another. In this paper, a workflow incorporating the movement between specialised languages and a central model is described. The central model is structured using the Industrial Foundation Classes (IFC). The motivation for elaborating on the interdisciplinary workflow is the desire to create a more iterative process without the need for the manual recreation of models. While it is difficult to have a description or language that contains all the information of all the disciplines, this research demonstrates how the IFC schema acts as a pivot not just between data sets, but also between concepts expressed in different representations thus giving from analysis to design

The interplay among gas, liquid and solid interactions determines the stability of surface nanobubbles
Surface nanobubbles are gaseous domains found at immersed substrates, whose remarkable persistence is still not fully understood. Recently, it has been observed that the formation of nanobubbles is often associated with a local high gas oversaturation at the liquid-solid interface. Tan, An and Ohl have postulated the existence of an effective potential attracting the dissolved gas to the substrate and producing a local oversaturation within 1 nm from it that can stabilize nanobubbles by preventing outgassing in the region where gas flow would be maximum. It is this effective solid-gas potential - which is not the intrinsic, mechanical interaction between solid and gas atoms - its dependence on chemical and physical characteristics of the substrate, gas and liquid, that controls the stability and the other characteristics of surface nanobubbles. Here, we perform free energy atomistic calculations to determine, for the first time, the effective solid-gas interaction that allows us to identify the molecular origin of the stability and other properties of surface nanobubbles. By combining the Tan-An-Ohl model and the present results, we provide a comprehensive theoretical framework allowing, among others, the interpretation of recent unexplained experimental results, such as the stability of surface nanobubbles in degassed liquids, the very high gas concentration in the liquid surrounding nanobubbles, and nanobubble instability in organic solvents with high gas solubility
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Surface and electrochemical controls on UO2 dissolution under anoxic conditions
The escape of radionuclides from underground spent nuclear fuel disposal facilities will likely result from anoxic dissolution of spent nuclear fuel by intruding groundwater. Anoxic dissolution of various forms of uranium dioxide (UO2), namely bulk pellet, powder and thin film, has been investigated. Long-duration static batch dissolution experiments were designed to investigate the release of uranium ions in deionized water and any surface chemistry that may occur on the UO2 surface. The dissolved uranium concentration for anoxic dissolution of nearly stoichiometric UO2 was found to be of the order of 10-9 mol/l for the three different sample types. Further, clusters (~500 nm) of homogeneous uranium-containing precipitates of ~20-100 nm grains were observed in thin film dissolution experiments. Such a low solubility of UO2 across sample types and the observation of secondary phases in deionized water suggest that anoxic UO2 dissolution does not only occur through a U(IV)(solid) to U(VI)(aqueous) process. Thus, we propose that dissolution of uranium under anoxic repository conditions may also proceed via U(IV)(solid) to U(IV)(aqueous), with subsequent U(IV)(precipitates) in a less defective form. Quantitative analysis of surface-sensitive EBSD diffractograms was conducted to elucidate lattice-mismatch induced cracks observed in UO2 thin film studies. Variable temperature anoxic dissolution was conducted, and no increased uranium concentration was observed in elevated temperatures
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
