Pakej pengujian IQ kanak-kanak / Tan Ai Chu
Sistem yang dibangunkan ini, iaitu Pakej Pengujian IQ Kanak-kanak merupakan satu pakej yang disediakan khusus untuk kanak-kanak yang berumur antara 3 tahun hingga 6 tahun. Memandangkan pada masa kini kanak-kanak telah didedahkan dengan penggunaan komputer oleh ibu bapa mereka, tambahan pula seruan kerajaan yang menggalakkan orang ramai menggunakan kemudahan teknologi maklumat yang sedia ada, maka sistem yang akan dibangunkan adalah sesuai dengan keperluan kanak-kanak. Metodologi yang disediakan untuk membangunkan sistem ini menggunakan pendekatan model air terjun dengan prototaip kerana ia dapat menjimatkan masa dalam tempoh pembangunan sistem ini. Setiap fasa dalam proses pembangunan adalah tersusun dan mengikut jadual, maka proses pembangunan sistem ini akan menjadi lebih sistematik dan tidak membazirkan masa. Perisian yang digunakan untuk membangunkan sistem ini ialah Director 8.0, Adobe Photoshop 6.0, Swish 2.0 dan QuickTime 5. Sistem ini mengutamakan penggunaan pelbagai jenis multimedia, Penekanan diberikan kepada penyuntingan dan pelarasan teks, grafik, audio, video dan animasi. Ini adalah penting kerana kanak-kanak akan lebih mudah tertarik kepada animasi. Selain itu, sistem ini dimuatkan dalam CD-ROM dan boleh dilarikan dalam persekitaran Windows. Ciri-ciri menyebabkan sistem ini mudah alih dan bersifat interaktif. Penggunaan dwibahasa dalam sistem ini, iaitu Bahasa Melayu dan Bahasa Inggeris membolehkan kanak-kanak membuat pilihan untuk menggunakan bahasa yang bersesuaian dengan mereka
The making of the Chinese society in Perak, 1874-1941 / Tan Ai Boay
This dissertation examines the making of the Chinese society in Perak. It scrutinizes the Chinese migration from South China, how the migrants adapted to the local society, and whether localisation had occurred among the Chinese migrant community in Perak before the Second World War.
The objectives of this thesis include: firstly, to probe into the formation of the Chinese community in Perak and the turning point of their transformation; secondly, the
study of the transitional pattern of Chinese leadership in Perak; thirdly, the scrutiny of the contestations between the British and the Chinese governments for the loyalty of the Chinese community in Perak; and lastly, to trace the growth of Chinese schools and organizations, and to find the turning point of such development.
Besides conducting a search in the library and archival materials in Malaysia, Great Britain, Singapore and Taiwan, the research had also accumulated primary materials, such as the epigraphic materials in Chinese temples and cemeteries, by carrying out field work in Perak and Penang. In addition to that, the research also employed oral history as a part of the research methodology.
Eventhough the Chinese in Perak were generally influenced by the political movements in China, they had learned to adapt themselves to the political and social climate of their adopted country. Thus the adopted country became their home land. The research concludes that elements of localisation could be traced back to the period before World War Two
Surface modification of titanium and its alloys in orthopedic applications / Tan Ai Wen
The clinical success of any orthopaedic implant is dependent upon the interaction between the implant surface and the respective bone tissue, termed osteo-integration.
However, current orthopaedic implants are still limited in effectiveness by the lack of appropriate cell adhesion and osteo-integration due to the intervention of fibrous tissue,
leading to implant dislocation, premature loosening and consequently a reduced implant lifespan. Titanium (Ti) and its alloys, which have favourable mechanical properties,
superior corrosion resistance and excellent biocompatibility, have been widely investigated for use in orthopaedic implants, but yet fail to achieve exemplary clinical results due to poor osteo-integration. To address these limitations, we investigated and assessed the modification of Ti oxide surface structures by introducing
nanotopographical features that mimic the physiological hierarchical nanostructures of natural bone tissue to impart enhanced osteo-integration. Titania (TiO2)
nanofiber/nanowire arrays, fabricated by a simple thermal oxidation technique, provide an interface that is capable of promoting osteo-integration similar to native bone tissue.
In this study, we focus on the fabrication of in situ titania nanofiber/nanowire arrays via a thermal oxidation technique, and the clinical feasibility of these nanostructured surfaces for various in vitro cellular behaviours. The outcomes of this work have been promising as these as-grown TiO2 nanofibrous/nanowire surface structures resulted in enhanced cellular response of osteoblast, chondrocytes, and adipose-derived stem cells
(ADSCs). These evidences suggest an inexpensive and highly scalable means to fabricate TiO2 nanofiber/nanowire arrays and demonstrate their potential use as a beneficial interface for orthopaedic implants
Ultrasonic assisted reflow soldering of lead free solder joint / Tan Ai Ting
The present thesis focused on the development of ultrasonic assisted reflow soldering technique to improve the reliability of lead free solder joint in the electronic packaging application by integrating ultrasonic vibration (USV) into the reflow stage of a reflow soldering process. In the preliminary phase, Cu/Sn-Ag-Cu/Cu lead free solder joints were successfully fabricated by using 20 kHz USV with 169 W (high-power-low-frequency USV) and 55 kHz USV with 10 W (low-power-high-frequency USV). The material characterization tests revealed that the solder matrix microstructure was refined and the formation of interfacial intermetallic compound (IMC) was reduced after treated with both types of USV. This is attributed to the USV induced nucleation of β-Sn and eutectic phases as well as the homogeneity effect on the mass and heat transfer in the fully liquefied SAC solder. Additionally, USV induced degassing mechanism has taken effect on the size reduction of macrovoids in the solder joint which enhanced the shear strength of the ultrasonic-treated solder joints in return. The study also expressed the variation of USV time and its influence on the microstructural and mechanical properties of the solder joints. Coarsening of solder matrix was observed at prolonged USV time when using low-power-high-frequency USV. This may be associated with the prolonged of acoustic streaming induced by USV in the molten SAC, which allowed the nucleated β-Sn, Cu6Sn5 and Ag3Sn crystals to grow larger with time. However, the solder joints with coarsened solder matrix microstructure exhibited higher shear strength compared to those with refined microstructure. Therefore, in the subsequent study, the effect of ultrasonic power on the solder joint properties was investigated by using low-power-high-frequency USV. The results revealed that higher ultrasonic power would induce greater superheating effect and promoted the formation of eutectic phase in the solder joints. Furthermore, the shear stress-strain curve acknowledged that the strength enhancement on the solder joint with coarsened solder matrix microstructure was contributed by the strain hardening mechanism of the coarser β-Sn phase. Overall, the present studies progressively presented the caliber of the proposed ultrasonic assisted reflow soldering technique in producing reliable lead free solder joint with homogeneous solder matrix microstructure, thinner IMC and improved shear strength. These evidences demonstrate the potential use of ultrasonic assisted reflow soldering as a beneficial approach for the fabrication of lead free solder joints

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
