Greek Education in Australia
Full text linkThis article provides readers with a well-researched portrait of the Greek experience in Australia. The author describes the various waves of immigration ‘down under’ and how the education system struggled to keep up with the demand. Problems of immigration and identity have forged the Australian Greek community into a stong, well-established group. Nevertheless, the current Australian situation resembles that of Canada and the United States in that second- and third-generation parents and children must adjust to maintain the Greek language and culture as the clientele for Greek education has changed dramatically. La question de l’éducation hellénophone est abordée à travers les changements survenus au sein de la communauté, en particulier avec l’apparition de la deuxième et de la troisième génération de Grecs, dont la conception en cette matière n’est pas nécessairement la même à celle de leurs parents. En ce sens les problèmes de cette éducation ressemblent, en partie du moins, à ceux auxquels font face les communautés grecques du Canada et même des États-Unis. Full text linkΠρόσφυγες και εκτοπισμένοι Έλληνες, θύματα κοινωνικο-οικονομικών και πολιτικών συγκυριών από το χώρο της Ρωσίας, φιλοπερίεργοι έμποροι από τη Βαλκανική και τη Μικρά Ασία, Xιώτες, Σάμιοι και Κασιώτες, Επτανήσιοι νησιώτες ναυτικοί και τυχοδιώκτες, μέλη πολύτεκνων οικογενειών ήσαν οι πρώτοι Έλληνες έποικοι που εγκαταστάθηκαν στις χώρες της Νοτιανατολικής Ασίας, Άπω Ανατολής και Ειρηνικού. Αρκετοί από αυτούς είχαν πρωταρχικά εγκατασταθεί στα μεγάλα αστικά κέντρα της Αλεξάνδρειας, της Κωνσταντινούπολης, της Σμύρνης, της Αγίας Πετρούπολης, της Οδησσού και της Φιλιππούπολης από το 1725. Αυτό τουλάχιστον μαρτυρούν οι ταφόπετρες στο κοιμητήριο του Καθολικού Ναού της Παναγίας στο προάστιο Murghihatta της Καλκούττας, όπου είναι θαμμένοι αρκετοί απ’ αυτούς.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Full text linkΗ μετανάστευση 100.000 Ελλήνων στις χώρες της Νοτίου Αμερικής ήταν ουσιαστικά προπολεμικό φαινόμενο (1880-1940), με εξαίρεση την εποίκιση των Ελλήνων στη Βραζιλία που συντελέστηκε στην περίοδο 1952-1970. Την ελληνική αυτή εποίκιση διέκρινε μεγάλη κινητικότητα, σποραδική εγκατάσταση, ελλιπή κοινωνική διαδικτύωση και χαλαρή κοινοτική διάρθρωση. Οι πρώτες εγκαταστάσεις οργανώθηκαν σε λιμάνια, αφού κυρίως ναυτικοί και νησιώτες ήσαν στην πλειοψηφία τους οι πρωτοπόροι. Τα επαγγέλματα που άσκησαν ήσαν εποχικά, οι οργανώσεις που συνέπηξαν είχαν χαρακτήρα αλληλοβοηθητικό, οι συνθήκες διαβίωσης πρωτόγονες. Πλεόναζαν οι εργένηδες και τα γεροντοπαλήκαρα, συχνά ανέστιοι και ενδείς περιφέρονταν από πόλη σε πόλη για την εξασφάλιση εργασίας. Αργότερα (μετά το 1924) έστησαν τις πρώτες κοινότητες, ίδρυσαν εθνοτπικιά σωματεία, αναζήτησαν να θεραπεύσουν τις θρησκευτικές τους ανάγκες. Η εποίκιση των Ελλήνων υπήρξε άρρυθμη, αλυσιδωτή, και ανδροκεντρική. Στην πλειοψηφία τους ήσαν οικονομικοί μετανάστες και πρόσφυγες των δύσκολων μεσοπολεμικών καταστάσεων που συγκλόνισαν την Ελλάδα και τον ευρύτερο ιστορικό της χώρο.

Australia
Η Αυστραλία πρωτοκατοικήθηκε πριν 40.000 χρόνια από ανθρώπους που ήλθαν από τη νοτιανατολική Ασία με αυτοσχέδια κανώ και σχεδίες από μπαμπού. Ο πολιτισμός των πρώτων εποίκων (Αμπορίτζινις), παραμένει ο πλέον αρχαίος συνεχόμενος γνωστός πολιτισμός. Όταν το 1788 άρχισε η ευρωπαϊκή εγκατάσταση, ο αριθμός των ιθαγενών έφτανε περίπου τους 350.000. Ο Πρώτος Στόλος αποτελούνταν από 1000 Βρετανούς, 750 από τους οποίους ήταν κατάδικοι. Για τα πρώτα πενήντα χρόνια της Ευρωπαϊκής εγκατάστασης, οι Αμπορίτζινις και οι νησιώτες των Torres Strait Islandς αποτελούσαν το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του Αυστραλιανού πληθυσμού. Η μεταφορά καταδίκων στην Αυστραλία από τις κατάμεστες βρετανικές φυλακές της Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Doublin και Birmingham (1788) συνεχίστηκε μέχρι και το 1852, όταν οι πρωτοπόροι Έλληνες αφίχθηκαν αναζητώντας την τύχη τους. Από το 1788 μέχρι το 1868, πάνω από 180.000 Βρετανοί και Ιρλανδοί κατάδικοι αφίχθηκαν στην Αυστραλία.
New Zealand
Αν και οι πρώτοι Έλληνες, τυχοδιώκτες και χρυσοθήρες, αρχίζουν να εμφανίζονται στη Νέα Ζηλανδία (ΝΖ) από το 1840, η ελληνική εποίκηση αρχίζει ουσιαστικά το 1873 με την εγκατάσταση του Ιθακήσιου Νικόλαου Μάντζαρη ή Φερνάντου. Ακολούθησε αλυσιδωτή μετανάστευση Ιθακησίων, Ζακυνθινών και Κεφαλονητών πρωτοπόρων, οι οποίοι άνοιξαν τα πρώτα εστιατόρια και ψαράδικα στο Wellington. Στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα αρχίζει η μετανάστευση Ελλήνων από την ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα, κυρίως Ακαρνάνων, καθώς επίσης από την Κρήτη και τη Σάμο. Στην Απογραφή του 1874 καταγράφονται συνολικά 25 Έλληνες, από τους οποίους οι 12 εργάζονται ως χρυσωρύχοι της εταιρείας South West Gold Field στο Νότιο νησί.. Μετά το 1927, εξαιτίας των συνεπειών της παγκόσμιας οικονομικής κρίσης, ο αριθμός των Ελλήνων εποίκων που εγκαθίστανται στη ΝΖ μειώνεται, μέχρι και τα πρώτα μεταπολεμικά χρόνια.

Full text linkΗ πολιτική και κοινωνική αστάθεια, οι αλλεπάλληλες δικτατορίες στρατιωτικών καθεστώτων, οι εξωγενείς εμπόλεμες παρεμβάσεις των Ευρωπαϊκών δυνάμεων (Βρετανών και Ισπανών) και κυρίως των ΗΠΑ, οι συνεχείς εμφύλιες αιματοχυσίες και οι δημογραφικοί περιορισμοί με την έντονη παρουσία του ιθαγενούς στοιχείου και μιγάδων με την παράλληλη απουσία συμπαγών ρευμάτων ευρωπαϊκής μετανάστευσης, που χαρακτηρίζουν τη σύνθεση του πληθυσμού, ήσαν οι κύριες αιτίες που δεν επέτρεψαν την εγκατάσταση μεγάλου αρθμού Ελλήνων μεταναστών και εποίκων στις χώρες της Κεντρικής Αμερικής. Παρά την πλούσια υποδομή σε μεταλλεύματα, ορυκτά και πετρέλαιο, η οικονομία των χωρών αυτών παρέμεινε αυστηρά εξαρτώμενη από τις ανεπτυγμένες χώρες της Δύσης και των ΗΠΑ, στην τεχνολογία και τις αγορές των οποίων στηρίχθηκε. Η οικονομική εξάρτηση αυτή, σε συνδυασμό με την έλλειψη έργων υποδομής, την υψηλή ανεργία, την κρατική υπερχρέωση και την άνιση κατανομή του εθνικού πλούτου, προκάλεσε διαρκείς εξωγενείς παρεμβάσεις στο πολιτικό σύστημα της χώρας και γέννησε την πολιτική και κοινωνική αστάθεια. Με τον κύριο όγκο της βιομηχανικής παραγωγής συγκεντρωμένο σχεδόν αποκλειστικά στα μεγάλα αστικά κέντρα του Μεξικού, και με τη δραματική μείωση της βιομηχανικής παραγωγής στις χώρες αυτές, το τελευταίο μισό του 20ου αιώνα, επιχειρήθηκαν διάφορες στρατηγικές όσον αφορά την οικονομική προσαρμογή και σταθεροποίηση, ακόμη και αναχρηματοδοτήσεις χωρίς επιτυχία, οι οποίες οδήγησαν τις χώρες της Κεντρικής Αμερικής σε σοβαρότατη κρίση και αδυναμία εξυπηρέτησης του εξωτερικού χρέους, με τραγικό κοινωνικό κόστος, κυρίως για τους παραμελημένους αγροτικούς πληθυσμούς και τους ακτήμονες. Σε ολόκληρο το διάστημα της μετα-αποικιοκρατικής περιόδου τους, δημιουργήθηκαν εύθραυστες και διαρκώς μεταβαλλόμενες πολιτικές ισορροπίες, με κίνδυνο και πάλι να αναδειχθούν οι ένοπλες δυνάμεις των χωρών τους σε ρυθμιστικό παράγοντα. Οι καταστάσεις αυτές προκάλεσαν βάναυση παράβαση των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, έξαρση της διακίνησης και εμπορίας ναρκωτικών, διαφθορά και ξέπλυμα βρόμικου χρήματος και τεράστιο δημοσιοοικονομικό χρέος που οδήγησαν τις χώρες αυτές σε πτώχευση και φορολογικό χάος.

Greeks in the Far Orient
No full textAfter his valuable work on Greek emigration to Australia, New Zealand and Latin America, Anastasios Tamis has now focussed on the Far East, for which primary sources are comparatively scarce. Using interviews and oral histories, as well as Greek diplomatic archives and, through translators, Chinese and Japanese official sources, he has compiled a history of Greeks in China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. The book is described by Professor Speros Vryonis Jr as ‘a major contribution to the historical experience of the Greek people in one of its most dynamic expressions: seafaring and emigration’
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
