Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Recruitment and retention of medical physicians in northern rural communities

This project explores specific factors and strategies for the recruitment and retention of medical physicians in rural communities. Important problems and concerns facing Canada are discussed regarding the root causes of mal-distribution with an emphasis on the province of British Columbia. This project explores the role the community, medical schools, provincial governments, and other factors have in recruitment and retention. The goal of this project is to emphasize the growing economic pressure the B.C. healthcare system faces and the increasing demand for recruiting and retaining medical physicians in rural areas. The project should provide insight to the unique and difficult circumstances faced by physicians in rural and remote areas and the causative factors of retention in rural practice moreover, it will explore potential recruitment and retention strategies. --Leaf i.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b194729

BID Group of Companies: selecting a strategic location for expansion to the south eastern United States

The owners of the BID Group of Companies (BID) want to establish a manufacturing operation within the high growth southern United States (US) sawmilling industry. The purpose of this project was to gain an overall understanding of the southern US in order to determine the best strategic location and the best mode of entry. A major challenge was determining where the industry was situated within this vast geographical area. A detail map of the southern US sawmill industry was developed to obtain a better understanding of the market concentration. This mapping exercise indicated that the top four states to consider for expansion were Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. In terms of entry mode, analysis indicated that buying and refurbishing an existing building was the most economical choice due to the high availability of affordable commercial real estate compared to the substantially higher costs to build new. The best building choice from each state was selected and examined against a top ten criteria of preferred attributes of both the building and the surrounding amenities. This process resulted in the recommendation of the building located in St. George, SC. The physical attributes of the St. George building combined with the amenities of the surrounding Dorchester County indicate that this is the right building in the right location and should contribute greatly to the success of BID's expansion into the southern US. --Leaf i.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b195066

Conflict, styles of conflict resolution, stress and job satisfaction amongst veterinary healthcare workers in clinical settings

This project looks at sources of stress and conflict, styles of conflict resolution and their outcomes in veterinary healthcare workers. An on-line survey was developed and sent to veterinary hospitals. Results included: Positive correlation between task and relationship conflict Positive correlation between conflict and avoiding, dominating and obliging styles of conflict resolution - Negative correlation between job satisfaction and stress - Negative correlation between job satisfaction and an avoiding style of conflict resolution and a positive correlation between job satisfaction and an integrating style of conflict resolution - Positive correlation between job satisfaction and intent to stay with both the current employer and the occupation. It is hoped this research can be used as a starting point to open dialogues about sources of stress and conflict, differing styles of conflict resolution and their benefits in terms of improved job satisfaction, decreased stress and intent to leave. --Leaf ii.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b186345

Successful mentoring: a model for the city of Prince George

Mentoring has existed in academic literature for over thirty years and has been a common form of developmental learning for centuries. The driving force of a formal mentoring program is built on the needs of an organization because mentoring can only truly be defined based on the purpose, expectations and context in which the relationship dwells. Anchored in an organization's culture, a formal mentoring program is synonymous with a talent management strategy. This research paper examines the literature regarding the past, present, and future of mentoring along with the various models, elements, phases, and stages involved in a mentoring program. The purpose, discussed in the research questions on page four, is linked to defining a successful mentoring program, contrasting the literature to the city of Prince George, and formulating a cost benefit analysis of a mentorship initiative. Since the city of Prince George is subject to a high degree of retirement risk, this topic as it relates to succession planning will be specifically scrutinized. --P. ii.The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b166626
