The theoretical framework of Complex Adaptive Systems allows modeling human-environment interactions that are constantly evolving and have implications for sustainability. The aim of this paper is to identify which approach, Malthusian or Boserupian, has served as a reference in contemporary studies on the human-environment relationship. We carried out a systematic review of the scientific literature building upon the seminal works of Malthus and Boserup. The scientific papers were collected from the Scopus database. Three sets of data were used: a set in which Malthus appears in the References, another for Boserup in the References, and a set with references to both Malthus and Boserup. Data were analyzed with the bibliometric software Bibliometrix. The results show the contribution of both authors to contemporary scientific studies on climate change, food security, waste management, among others. Boserup stands out for her contribution to agricultural land use and international agricultural policies after the Second World War, whereas Malthus addresses broader themes linked to human development, considering aspects such as wealth, poverty, human nature, and happiness. As regards the human-environment relationship, i.e., linking the aspects of sustainability, the Malthusian approach is perceived as being closer to the strong sustainability, to ecological economics, subjects linked to the work of Georgescu-Roegen. In Boserup, it is closer to weak sustainability, reflected in international economic policies. The implications of this research include the impact of climatic alterations on diets, which requires considering the mathematical contributions, bifurcations, and tipping points that will ultimately impact human development on Earth. The reading of Malthus’ work seems to be relevant for studies addressing contemporary population (society) issues. The originality of our study lies in the identification of contemporary topics in human-environment relations that are grounded in the works of Malthus and Boserup, suggesting that Malthus’ seminal work has served as a reference for a wide range of sustainability issues. The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Based on divergent perspectives on corporate sustainability: institutions and stakeholder expectations versus Strong Sustainability based on Georgescu-Roeger; this work aims to examine the content of Sustainability Reports disclosed by brazilian companies in light of theoretical bases and ESG prerogatives as opposed to Strong Sustainability. The present study follows three interconnected paths with a view to investigating sustainability in these two prerogatives. First, the thesis investigated the theories and voluntary and normative initiatives that have supported the studies of theses and dissertations in the Graduate Programs in Accounting and Controlling in Brazil that discussed the subject of Sustainability. The results demonstrate the strong influence of the Stakeholders Theory and the Disclosure Theory; from voluntary disclosure initiatives to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI); and, normative initiatives with an emphasis on Environmental Management - environmental licensing. The timeline of theses and dissertations demonstrating that studies up to 2012 were based on theories and voluntary/normative initiatives. In the years 2013 to 2017 the occurrence was voluntary theories and initiatives. From the year 2018, the studies constitute theoretical bases, all focused on institutional and economic prerogatives. A second timeline contemplated the legal and voluntary organization, evidencing the commitment to voluntary initiatives, which became normative in the period: the Added Value Demonstration (DVA) in 2007 and the Integrated Report formulated by the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) in the year 2020. However, despite the institutional involvement in sustainability disclosures in Brazil, no studies were found that discuss Strong Sustainability. Second, this thesis identified the evolution of aspects of ESG and Strong Sustainability in the Sustainability Reports of brazilian companies in different sectors of economic activity. For this, the author defined a dictionary of words representing sustainability in the Environmental, Bioeconomy, Economy, Governance and Social dimensions. Text mining explored contents of 1,591 reports from 251 brazilian companies, published over the years 2000 to 2021, in 20 sectors. The results showed the predominance of the Economic Dimension, followed by the Environmental, Social and Governance dimensions. The Bioeconomy scope is the least representative. Thus, there is evidence that the set of Sustainability Reports that were part of the study have characteristics of Weak Sustainability, with Strong Sustainability being neglected. This statement is also confirmed by the low frequency of the Environmental dimension compared to the other dimensions. For last, this work discussed occurrences of the Bioeconomy Dimension in Sustainability Reports, followed by the presentation of concepts, indicators and cases of different methodologies that can be considered in the preparation of Sustainability Reports with a view to reporting Strong Sustainability. In view of these results, this thesis argues that Brazilian companies have not considered aspects of Strong Sustainability in their Sustainability Reports, with a predominance of disclosure of Weak Sustainability content. The results provide suggestions for reporting Strong Sustainability that include emergy metrics, exertion, and analysis of matter fluxes and energy fluxes. The main implication of research hypothesis is that companies disclose information on economic aspects, but even more frequently than those recommended in the ESG (Environmental, Governance and Social) concept; and, the content of the reports neglect Strong Sustainability, failing to attribute value to the Sustainability Reports

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Get PDF
Water is present in all human processes and activities, and it is a vital source for human beings. Brazil is the depository of about 12% of the world's water supply, characterizing itself as one of the countries with a relative abundance of water. However, due to a history of inadequate use of water resources by humanity, associated with the increase in demand by various social and economic actors, such as the increase in population and the growing demand for food, some countries are already facing situations of water scarcity. Water is one of the natural resources widely used in economic activities, mainly in the agribusiness sectors, which are responsible for consuming more than 72% of all water used in the country. The agricultural sector, for example, is the largest consumer of water in the world, highlighting the importance of understanding in greater depth the relationship between agribusiness and water. The concept of virtual water and water footprint arises to quantify the water involved in the means of production and, based on this quantification, making it possible to understand the use and exchange of water through product commercialization. This research sought to analyze virtual water flow incorporated in products that circulate in the foreign market, mainly in the agribusiness sector. The present study aimed to evaluate virtual water flows in exports from the Brazilian agribusiness sectors and their relationship with water scarcity in importing countries, demonstrating Brazil's role as a great exporter of virtual water through products linked to agribusiness. For the research, Brazilian exports from 2010 to 2020 to the 42 major trading partner countries and the volume of virtual water used for the 67 economic activities to which Brazil exported in this period were analyzed, including the agribusiness sector. For this, descriptive bibliographic research was carried out based on books, scientific articles, and specialized websites on the matter and data from the input-output matrix to calculate virtual water consumption. The research concluded that countries with greater water scarcity tend to increase Brazilian agribusiness imports. This research aimed to demonstrate the importance of water for commercial relations and the current situation in Brazil. Thus, in the face of global water scarcity, Brazil, through its exports, contributes abundant water resources to the world supply through exports. The concept of water footprint and virtual water should be known by Brazilian exporters, warning them about the importance of water conscientious consumption as a way to prevent its scarcity in the future and as a form of competitive advantage over countries that have water scarcity and droughts risk

Venomic biodiversity and its applications in agriculture

Over time, humanity has used nature’s resources to extract the means it needs for its development. Among natural substances, poisons have aroused interest in their composition and their lethal effects. As a result, research on compounds from venomic biodiversity has been widely carried out in human and animal health. However, new incentives for the development of a bio-based economy, or the bioeconomy, have put biological assets in evidence. A series of initiatives associating biotechnology and elements of biodiversity for the production of value- added products has been part of national policies, programs, and strategies in bioeconomics. Agriculture is a sector in which biotechnology-based innovations have been employed on a large scale. In this context, the question that motivated the present research was: Has venomic biodiversity been used to develop products for agricultural use? The general objective was to investigate the applications of venomic biodiversity in agricultural-related innovations. To achieve the general objective, five species of venomous animals were selected: spiders, bees, snakes, scorpions, and wasps. The use of these species’ venom in innovations related to agriculture was identified through the registration of patents. The World Intellectual Property Organization - WIPO Patenscope patent base was chosen for the research. The search engine fields were filled with the name of the animal species, the Boolean operator AND plus the term “venom.” Thus, for the search for patents on the use of bee venom, for example, the terms “bee” AND “venom” were used. Then, two filters were applied: one selecting, from the International Patent Classification - IPC, the Area “A01” that concerns the Area “Human Needs” Class “agriculture”; and another, selecting specific patents IPC A01H to exemplify applications of venomic biodiversity associated with agriculture. The results show a trend of growth in the registration of patents using venomic biodiversity in agriculture, especially from the year 2000. Snakes, scorpions, and wasps are the animal species most often cited in patents in association with agriculture. The IPCs with the highest occurrence of records were: A01H, which refers to “new plants or processes for obtaining them; plant reproduction by means of tissue culture techniques”; A01K, which concerns “livestock; treatment of birds, fish, insects; pisciculture; animal breeding or reproduction, not included elsewhere; new animal creations”; and, A01N, which deals with the “conservation of the bodies of human beings or animals or plants or parts of them (preservation of food or food products); biocides, for example: disinfectants, as pesticides or as herbicides (preparations for medicinal, dental or toilet purposes that kill or prevent the growth or proliferation of unwanted organisms); repellents or pest attractants; plant growth regulators (mixtures of pesticides with fertilizers). However, IPC A01H was the one that prevailed regarding the number of applications for patent registrations. Thus, it was possible to illustrate the applications of venomic biodiversity in the development of new varieties of plants in different species, from commercial cultivation, such as soybeans, corn, wheat, rice, and vegetables. Finally, the brief description of some patents of this IPC was used to exemplify the application of venomic biodiversity in agriculture. Another impressive result is the high concentration of patent registrations by large traditional companies in the supply of chemical-based agricultural inputs, such as Monsanto, Pioneer, Syngenta, and Basf. In conclusion, the results show that large corporations have intensified patent applications using compounds from venomic biodiversity. Although biodiversity is distributed across continents, patent registration has been concentrated in the United States. Although it has vast biodiversity, Brazil has not appeared in the list of the top ten, showing a space with the potential for exploration to add value and applications in one of the country’s main economic sectors
