    Multilingual reading proficiency in an emerging parallel-language environment

    Rapid changes have taken place in the linguistic environment of higher education in Europe, where many students attend parallel-language courses, leading to a use of English (officially a foreign language) for academic purposes alongside the local language. This study investigated the relationship of Swedish students’ reading habits and abilities in Swedish and English. Their reading abilities were assessed with an interview and a Swedish and English reading test, and their reading habits with an interview, questionnaire, and Author Recognition Test. The study found correlation between English reading ability and some of the reading habits measures which is more reminiscent of situations where English is an official language. This was reflected in the students’ reading habits. Their leisure reading included both Swedish and English material, and their choice between the two depended primarily on factors such as quality and availability, and not language. So for these students there is little difference between reading difficulty in L1 and L2. These results suggest that many students in the parallel-language environments are highly biliterate, implying very different EAP requirements than encountered elsewhere. Implications are discussed.</p

    Consecutive earthquakes temporarily restructured the zooplankton community in an Alpine Lake

    Two consecutive earthquakes temporary changed a zooplankton community in a high-mountain Lake Krn (altitude 1383 m a.s.l.). It was dominated by the eurytherm copepod, Cyclops vicious, until 1998, when the first earthquake hit the lake (EMS = 5.6). After the earthquake, the population of C. vicious collapsed and the thermophilic cladoceran, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, took over. After the second earthquake in 2004 (EMS = 4.0), C. vicious became untraceable. In 2008, few copepods reappeared and by 2010 they became the sole dominant again. Only Secchi-disc depth showed a statistically significant increase over time, while P,, and temperature showed an increasing trend, yet the relationship was insignificant. To compare multi-parameter properties of the water column, the studied period was divided into Period 1 (before the first earthquake). Period 2 (between earthquakes) and Period 3 (after the second earthquake). A Hotteling T-2 test confirmed a statistically significant difference between Periods 1 and 2 & 3 (P 0.1). During simple laboratory experiment, specimens of C. vicious were covered with a thin layer of sediment, to mimic the earthquake's effect on their survival. A hypothesis was that the timing of both earthquakes had been crucial for decimation of C. vicious population as they re-suspended sediment with hibernating copepodites. As these became subsequently buried they were deprived of a re-activation signal and exposed prolonged anoxic conditions there. C. quadrangula temporary filled the void left by the copepod, which needed 6 years to regain its dominance

    Data highlighting effects of ketogenic diet on cardiomyopathy and hepatopathy in glycogen storage disease type IIIa

    Datasets highlighting effects of ketogenic diet (KD) in a glycogen storage disease type IIIa patient is presented with the longest patient follow up report to date. Now a 15-year old girl with GSD type IIIa, diagnosed at 1 year of age, had initially introduced treatment with diet high carbohydrates, according to the recommendations. Progressively she developed left ventricular obstructive hypertrophy, hepatomegaly and skeletal myopathy. At the age of 11 years, she was introduced KD and continuous ketosis has been maintained for over 4 years providing longest reported follow up to date. KD introduction lead to a normalization of left ventricular parameters and ventricular mass and to an improvement in hepatic injury markers and decrease in liver size. We provided a table with biochemical parameters, a table providing detailed diet composition, tables with cardiac and hepatic measures and figures depicting cardiac NMR imagesall the tables/figures are provided referring to the KD introduction (values prior/after).
