Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Synergistc effects of calcium antagonists and statins on endothelial function: a new lesson from the ASCOT trial.
Essential hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor. Although pharmacological treatment is highly effective in reducing cardiovascular risk, it is worth noting that it is not sufficient to reduce the relative risk of hypertensive patients to the level of normotensive individuals. On the other hand, although all antihypertensive drug classes are able, by reducing blood pressure, to proportionally improve the patients’ prognosis, clinical and experimental data suggest that some classes of antihypertensive drugs, such as calcium antagonists and lipid-lowering drugs, namely statins, are able to provide beneficial effects that go beyond their effect on the specific clinical target. Another aspect that will be addressed in the present article is the interaction between different therapeutic strategies. In particular, the positive synergy between calcium antagonists and statins will be analysed. Sub-analysis of the ASCOT trial demonstrates that the combination of an atorvastatin and amlodipine-based regimen produces a greater beneficial effect, mainly on coronary events, as compared with the combination of the statin with the atenolol-based regimen. A likely explanation for this positive interaction is a synergistic effect of these compounds on endothelial function. Impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilatation is a characteristic of essential hypertensive patients with high cardiovascular risk and it is a mechanism promoting atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. Both amlodipine and atorvastatin are molecules effective in reversing endothelial dysfunction, as demonstrated in experimental models and in patients. Since the therapeutic improvement of endothelial dysfunction can lead to a better prognosis, the synergistic beneficial effect of calcium antagonists and statins, in terms of cardiovascular events, can be the consequence of their endothelium protecting effect. Therefore, the possible mechanisms of interaction between statins and calcium antagonists on endothelial function will also be discuss
Characterisation of drag and wake properties of canopy patches immersed in turbulent boundary layers
The wakes and the drag forces of canopy patches with different densities, immersed in turbulent boundary layers, are investigated experimentally. The patches are circular (with outer diameter DD ) and are made of several identical circular cylinders (height, HH , and diameter, dd ). The bulk aspect ratio of all of the patches ( AR=H/DAR=H/D ) was fixed at 1 and the patch density ( ϕ=Ncd2/D2ϕ=Ncd2/D2 , also referred to as the solidity) is altered by varying the number of cylinders ( NcNc ) in the patch. Drag measurements show that the patch drag coefficient increases with increasing density. However, the drag coefficient of the highest investigated density ( ϕ≈0.25ϕ≈0.25 ) is greater than the drag coefficient of a solid patch (i.e. ϕ=1ϕ=1 , which is a solid cylinder with AR=1AR=1 ). Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were carried out along the streamwise-wall-normal ( xx - yy ) plane along the centreline of patch and in the streamwise-spanwise ( xx - zz ) plane at its mid height (i.e. y=H/2y=H/2 ). Mean velocity fields show that the porosity of the patch promotes bleeding along all directions. It was observed that bleeding along the vertical/horizontal direction increases/decreases with increasing ϕϕ . Furthermore, it was also observed that bleeding along the lateral direction dictates the point of flow separation along the sides of the patch and makes it independent of ϕϕ . All of these aspects make wakes for porous patches markedly different from their solid counterpart and provide a rational basis to explain the observed trends in the drag coefficient
Offenders and their victims: Search for possible mediation [Autori e vittime di reato alla ricerca della mediazione possibile]
The authors evaluate critically a recent model of criminal justice known as restorative justice. After delineating the general (both ideological and pragmatic) pattern of the model, some criminological and penological considerations are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
On the aerodynamic design of axial flow turbines by an implicit upwind axisymmetric method
An inverse time-marching solution of Euler equations is performed in the meridional plane of a complete machine. The method predicts the flowfield and blade cambersurface geometry that correspond to a specified load distribution in the blade regions. The implicit approach is used to solve Euler equations with a specified mass flowrate at the outlet section. This boundary condition leads to typical turbine solutions of the inverse problem. The implicit upwind scheme is based on a time linearization of Osher's flux difference splitting operator. This operator employs a high-order Riemann solution that provides second-order space accuracy. For infinite-span turbine cascades working in the low-subsonic range, the new method has convergence times and residuals that are one order of magnitude lower than previous explicit methods. It keeps the same convergence properties up to the sonic outflow conditions, while explicit methods fail in the high-subsonic range. When endwalls are included in the computation to design finite-span cascades or complete turbine stages, the method still encounters some numerical instabilities that can be partly overcome using a sufficient mesh resolution in the spanwise directio
