Extended Vocal Repertoire in Hypsiboas punctatus (Anura: Hylidae)

    No full text
Male Hypsiboas punctatus emit seven different types of calls: three consist of repeated trains of notes, and four are single-note calls with frequency modulation. Behavioral observations allowed assigning the calls to specific functions: (1) and (2) advertisement calls (short and long duration), (3) territorial signaling, (4) courtship interactions, (5)–(7) aggressive interactions (aggressive, fighting, and release calls). All calls consist of a single note and possess harmonic structure. The harmonic structure from the advertisement call suggests a missing fundamental frequency. Advertisement calls exhibit inter- and intraindividual variation in the dominant frequency. Our results indicate that previous comparisons among vocalizations of H. punctatus were based on different types of calls.Fil: Brunetti, Andrés Eduardo. The reproductive biology of Hypsiboas punctatus (Anura: Hylidae): male territoriality and the possible role of different signals during female choice

Anuran amphibians are known to employ acoustic signals as the principal form to access potential mates, while recent studies have highlighted the importance of multiple cues during courtship. Hypsiboas punctatus is a hylid species in which males emit advertisement calls and have sexually dimorphic skin glands (SDSGs). However, knowledge on the reproductive biology of this species is very limited. We present the first systematic field-observational study on the behaviour of H. punctatus, which was complemented by observations under laboratory-controlled conditions. Males exhibit a territorial behaviour as is evidenced by site fidelity, aggressiveness against male intruders (usually involving fights), and signalling behaviour. We found that female choice would be operating at two different levels, which we defined as Initial Exploration (I.E.) and Proximate Exploration (P.E.). These levels would be guided by acoustic signals in I.E., while tactile and/or chemical signals (considering the presence of SDSGs) would be more important in P.E. We also provide descriptions of vocal interaction between males, amplexus, and egg clutch. We suggest that SDSGs located at the mental gland may be important in delivering sexual pheromones to the female during amplexus. Finally, our results are compared to similar behaviours that have been described for related species, and discussed in terms of the probable existence of multimodal communication.Fil: Brunetti, Andrés Eduardo. Structural diversity of nuptial pads in Phyllomedusinae (Amphibia: Anura: Hylidae)

We studied the morphological variation of the nuptial pads using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in 26 species of phyllomedusines (Anura: Hylidae), representing the five currently recognized genera. All phyllomedusines have single nuptial pads with dark colored epidermal projections (EPs). Spine-shaped EPs occur in Cruziohyla calcarifer, Phrynomedusa appendiculata and in one species of Phasmahyla. The other species have roundish EPs. The density of the EPs on the pad is variable. Species in the Phyllomedusa hypochondrialis Group have EPs with a density that varies between 764 ± 58/mm 2 and 923 ± 160/mm 2. In all other studied species (including the Phyllomedusa burmeisteri and Phyllomedusa perinesos groups, Phyllomedusa camba, Phyllomedusa boliviana, Phyllomedusa sauvagii, Phyllomedusa bicolor, and Phyllomedusa tomopterna) the density of EPs varies between 108 ± 20/mm 2 and 552 ± 97/mm 2. Pores were observed with SEM in C. calcarifer, Agalychnis lemur, Agalychnis moreletii, but its presence is confirmed through histological sections on several other species. Its visibility using SEM seems to be related with the level of separation between adjacent EPs. The pores in the four studied species of Agalychnis are shown with SEM and histological sections to have a characteristic epidermal rim, that is absent in the otherphyllomedusines. Unlike most previous reports on breeding glands, those of phyllomedusines are alcian blue positive, indicating the presence of acidic mucosubstances on its secretions.Fil: Luna, María Celeste. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Unraveling late Pennsylvanian brachiopod assemblages from the San Rafael Basin (Argentina): Biostratigraphic implications to southwestern Gondwana

    Get PDF
New and previous fossil remains and resulting biostratigraphy of the El Imperial Formation at Arroyo del Imperial, Quebrada de La Horqueta, and Can˜on ´ del Atuel key sections are analyzed, while the faunal relationships among them are clarified. Two diachronnous faunas, the pTS and TSAIII associations, relatives to the TivertoniaStreptorhynchus assemblage are recognized and constrained to early late Bashkirian and Moscovian ages, respectively. These age assignments are supported by statistical analyses and available palynological and radiometric dating. Previous mentions of brachiopods from Arroyo del Imperial and Quebrada de La Horqueta are elucidated with the identification of Buxtonia cf. riojanae (Leanza), Streptorhynchus inaequiornatus Leanza, Spiriferellina? sp., Septosyringothyris (Precosyringothyris) aff. jaguelensis Lech, Septosyringothyris (Precosyringothyris) cf. feruglioi (Amos), Saltospirifer guevarai Cisterna and Archbold and Pericospira sp. A new marine fauna from the upper part of the Can˜on ´ del Atuel section (Cabecera del Can˜on ´ Member) is reported. It includes the brachiopods Argentiella cf. A. stappenbecki Archbold, Cisterna and Sterren, Oehlertella annae (Feruglio), Orbiculoidea saltensis Reed, Calytrixia piersoni Taboada, Coolkilella aredesi Taboada, Costatumulus sp. and Septosyringothyris? sp. A biochronostratigraphic correlation scheme, including key lithostratigraphic units and biozones of central-western Argentina is updated.Fil: Taboada, Arturo Cesar. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
