Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

An analysis of techniques for determining the fire protective effectiveness of reed was performed; the need to develop reliable methods for studying the process of ignition and flame propagation around the surface of the building structure, required to create new types of fireproof materials, was established. Estimation of ignition time and time of passing the surface area by the flame front revealed the unreliability of the actual values of the flammability index. The method for determining the process of ignition and propagation of flame of fire protected materials was substantiated and, taking into account the permanent conditions of heat and mass exchange in the course of testing, the setup was developed. Determining the flammability index implies the impact on sample of the heat flux of the electric radiation plane and the sample ignition by the burner. In also involves determining the thermal coefficient of the plant, measurement of the maximum temperature of combustion products and the time of its achievement, ignition time and the time of passing the surface sections by the flame front, the length of the burnt part of the sample and calculation of flammability index.The conducted research into the process of ignition and flame propagation along the reed surface using a given technique showed that the raw sample under thermal influence ignited at second 52, the flame propagated across the whole sample over 100 s. The fire protected sample, treated with the impregnating solution based on the mixture of inorganic and organic substances, specifically the mixture of urea and phosphoric acids and natural polymer in the amount of 47.1 g/m2, ignited at second 595, flame propagation along the surface occurred only at the first section, the maximum temperature of flue gases was 114 °C, flammability index decreased to 0.42.The results of determining the flammability index showed that under the influence of high temperature flow on the coating in the amount of 46.2 g/м2, ignition and flame propagation did not occur, flammability index was 0. Due to intense swelling, there occurred a slight increase in temperature in the vent pipe. A decrease in the flame retardant in the composition by two times at the same consumption resulted in an increase in flammability index for the roofing impregnating solution up to 5.8, and for the swelling coating up to 0.96, respectively. The above results make it possible to establish the ratio of flame retardants and polymers in these compositions and their required quantityПроведен анализ способов определения огнезащитной эффективности камыша и установлена необходимость разработки надежных методов исследования процесса воспламенения и распространения пламени по поверхности строительной конструкции, необходимых для создания новых типов огнезащитных материалов. Оценка времени воспламенения и прохождения фронтом пламени участков поверхности, выявила недостоверность реальных значений индекса горючести материала. Был обоснован способ определения процесса воспламенения и распространения пламени огнезащищенных материалов, а с учетом постоянных условий тепломассообмена в ходе испытаний, разработано устройство. Определение индекса горючести заключается в воздействии на образец теплового потока электрической радиационной панели и зажигании образца горелкой. А также определения теплового коэффициента установки, измерения максимальной температуры продуктов горения и время ее достижения, времени воспламенения и прохождения фронтом пламени участков поверхности, длину сгоревшей части образца и расчета индекса горючести.Проведенные исследования процесса воспламенения и распространения пламени по поверхности камыша по данной методике показали, что необработанный образец под термическим воздействием занялся на 52 с, пламя распространилось по всему образцу в течение 100 с. А також визначення теплового коефіцієнта установки, вимірювання максимальної температури продуктів горіння і час її досягнення, часу займання і проходження фронтом полум'я ділянок поверхні, довжину згорілої частини зразка і розрахунку індексу горючості.Проведені дослідження процесу займання та розповсюдження полум'я по поверхні очерету за даною методикою показали, що необроблений зразок під термічним впливом зайнявся на 52 с, полум'я поширилося по всьому зразку протягом 100 с. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
