GEODEMOGRAPHIC AND ECONOMIC DISPARITIES IN DRĂGOIASA-TULGHEŞ DEPRESSIONARY ALIGNMENT

    No full text
The organisation process of the human communities that populated and nowadays inhabit Drăgoiasa-Tulgheş alignment and the adjacent mountain areas was strongly and intimately connected with nature and its habitation potential. The physical environment acted as a premise, at times favourable and at times unfavourable, influencing human life depending on the social imperatives. Once the first human settlements appeared, we may speak of an intensification of the systematic and organized capitalization of natural resources, with positive effects on demographic growth, like the case of Borsec, where, in the second half of the 19th century, Germans and Czech were brought, as qualified workforce in glassmaking and mining. The natural setting, the geographic position were favourable for the development of an activity that consisted of animal husbandry and forestry, with highs and lows caused by social and historical factors that influenced the population of this area. This territory functioned for a long time as an almost closed social-economic system, the material and human factors rarely exceeding the surrounding mountains

TWO DECADES OF GEOGRAPHICAL HIGHER EDUCATION IN BAIA MARE (1998-2018)

This paper aims to emphasize the history of the geographical tertiary education system in the Baia Mare Municipality (1998-2018), looking into „the transformations” of the Geography specialisation, specifically the evolution of enrolled students and graduates, the annual staff dynamics, as well as a synthesis of its educational and scientific achievements, ending with a presentation of its infrastructure. The 1998-1999 academic year corresponds with the accreditation of the first two specialisations of the Baia Mare Branch, one of them being History-Geography, long-term studies (4 years) in Romanian, part of the Faculty of Human-Christian Sciences, from „Vasile Goldiș” University Arad. The purpose of said specialisation was to provide competent teachers for the schools of Maramureș and the surrounding counties, preparing seven series of graduates (25 in 2002 and 40 in 2008), a total number of 601 students, reaching its peak (126) in 2004-2005. The fall of 2005 is the first significant moment in the history of Baia Mare Geography, as the Faculty of Natural Sciences was established and the History-Geography specialisation was transformed into the Geography Section, short-term day studies (3 years). It did not last long however, having only one series of graduates (12 in 2008 of a total of 18 enrolled students in 2005-2006). A year later, a new change occured, when a new specialisation was established, named Geography of Tourism, still operating to this day. In its 12 years of existence, it was first part of the Faculty of Nature Sciences, Engineering and Informatics (2011), Biology, Ecology and Geography Department, then part of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, Informatics and Engineering, without its own departament. It is currently part of the Engineering and Informatics Department. Of the total 1,770 students, who studied one of the three geographical specialisations during 1998-2018, the number of graduates (between 2002-2018) was 447 (25.2%), 256 studying Geography of Tourism (57.2%), 179 History-Geography (40%) and 12 Geography (2.8%). In terms of length, long-term studies (History-Geography) holds 44.8% (793 students) of the 1,770 students, while short-term studies (Geography, Geography of Tourism) reaches 55.2% (977 students, 43 at Geography and 934 at Geography of Tourism). The second major component that the paper aims to present is the educational and scientific staff, by carefully presenting the achievements for each member of „Vasile Goldiș” University of Arad

SPECIFIC FEATURES OF THE TOURIST FLOW IN BORSEC RESORT

    No full text
In Borsec resort, tourism occupies a special place, as an economic alternative, still remaining viable and a form of exploitation of natural and human potential, with its own history and traditions, with a bottling industry, operating for more than two centuries and which practically today offers one of Romanian representative brands of mineral water – Borsec. The drawback of the resort’s tourism, based exclusively on the exploitation of mineral water, is analyzed in the context of the recovery opportunities through diversification of tourist facilities, rehabilitation and application of modern means of image promotion. Moreover, the Carpathian road rehabilitation project will also contribute to this. One of the most important Romanian projects related to transport axes, the future Târgu Mureş-Iaşi-Ungheni highway may already be considered favorable in providing a national and international reputation

On 5th July 2013, the National Institute of Statistics published the final results of the 2011 Population and Household Census. Therefore, for this study, we reviewed the statistical data regarding the ethnic and confessional structure of Harghita County, mentioning the fact that, at the 2011 census, registering one’s religion and ethnicity was done based on each person’s statement. However, for those who did not wish to divulge these information, there is no available information for these two characteristics, and, in our article, these people were classified as undeclared. Consequently, when it comes to Harghita County’s ethnic structure, only 302 435 people declared their ethnicity, Romanians numbering 39 196 people (13.0%), Hungarians 257 707 people (85.2%), Gypsies or Rroma 5 326 people (1.7%), while other ethnicities comprising 206 people (0.1%). The declared confessional structure was 302 144 people, most being Roman Catholics, that is 200 663 persons (66.4%), followed by Orthodox, with 37 670 persons (12.4%), Reformed (36 760 people or 12.2%), Unitarians (21 023 people or 7.0%) and other religions, without religions and atheists (6 028 people or 2.0%)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

GEOMORPHOLOGICAL SYSTEM’S VULNERABILITY OF THE EASTERN REGION OF PETROŞANI DEPRESSION AND GENERATION OF CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTS BY THE COAL EXPLOITATION ACTIVITY

    No full text
Eastern Region of Petroşani Depression is a complex intensely modified by coal mining activity, an activity that has increased the vulnerability of the system and the formation of critical environments which evolution over time is difficult to establish. Critical environments, seen as the product of environmental system malfunction caused by human intervention, takes the form of thresholds, characterized by phenomena of disorganization of information and energy that reduce or make disappear entirely the internal capacity of the system to self-regulate and to ensure a dynamic balance
