Benedetto Bacchini nell’Europa fra Sei e Settecento. Libri, arti e scienze

Shape and interfacial structure of droplets. Exact results and simulations
We consider the fluctuating interface of a droplet pinned on a flat wall. For such a system we compare results obtained within the exact field theory of phase separation in two dimensions and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for the Ising model. The interface separating coexisting phases splits and hosts drops whose effect is to produce subleading corrections to the order parameter profile and correlation functions. In this paper we establish the first direct measurement of interface structure effects by means of high-performance MC simulations which successfully confirm the field-theoretical results. Simulations are found to corroborate the theoretical predictions for interface structure effects whose analytical expression has recently been obtained. It is thanks to these higher-order corrections that we are able to correctly resettle a longstanding discrepancy between simulations and theory for the order parameter profile. In addition, our results clearly establish the long-ranged decay of interfacial correlations in the direction parallel to the interface and their spatial confinement within the interfacial region also in the presence of a wall from which the interface is entropically repelled
Interfacially adsorbed bubbles determine the shape of droplets
The characterization of density correlations in the presence of strongly fluctuating interfaces has always been considered a difficult problem in statistical mechanics. Here we study - by using recently developed exact field-theoretical techniques - density correlations for an interface with endpoints on a wall forming a droplet in 2D. Our framework applies to interfaces entropically repelled by a hard wall as well as to wetting transitions. In the former case bubbles adsorbed on the interface are taken into account by the theory which yields a systematic treatment of finite-size corrections to one- and two-point functions and show how these are related to Brownian excursions. Our analytical predictions are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations without free parameters. We also determine one- and two-point functions at wetting by using integrable boundary field theory. We show that correlations are long ranged for entropic repulsion and at wetting. For both regimes we investigate correlations in momentum space by generalizing the notion of interface structure factor to semi-confined systems. Distinctive signatures of the two regimes manifest in the structure factor through a term that we identify on top of the capillary-wave one
Four-point interfacial correlation functions in two dimensions. Exact results from field theory and numerical simulations
We derive exact analytic results for several four-point correlation functions for statistical models exhibiting phase separation in two-dimensions. Our theoretical results are then specialized to the Ising model on the two-dimensional strip and found to be in excellent agreement with high-precision Monte Carlo simulations

The role of educative thought in the life and work of Antonio Gramsci
Many philosophers have propounded a vision of an improved society, what distinguishes Antonio Gramsci is his continuous effort to make it happen by understanding the process in order to put into practice. Gramsci's conviction about the importance of educative development came from both theory and experience. While there has been considerable examination of Gramsci's work in relation to the Prison Notebooks, this study will seek to address a lacuna in Gramsci scholarship. Using Gramsci's philological method, I analyse Gramsci's pre-prison activity; his pre-prison articles and letters, which, together with his letters from prison, formed part of his educative mission. This educative process was necessary, in order to construct a new party which would develop a collective will, collaboratively, with the masses. In this study therefore, I explore the contexts and formative experiences of the first part of his life together with the intellectual sources from which Gramsci developed his later theories, making central hitherto underemphasised connections between them which informed his writing and ideas. I intend to illustrate that Gramsci's underlying purpose in his writing, and political activity, was not only practical, on how to create a new socialist ruling class, but also educative in forming the mindset and values of his comrades. So that in addition to outlining his vision of a new order, he implicitly guided or explicitly explained the processes by which the necessary changes in social relations and moral climate could be made in order to achieve it. Each person had to engage with the values of the new order so that each could contribute to the construction of a new robust state. It was essential to build a hegemony at the most profound level, one which was dependent on collective understandings and a collective will
L’eloquente silenzio della comunicazione scritta. I trompe-l’oeil della Fototeca Zeri,
The examination of the collection of over two hundred images of trompe-l’œil preserved in the Fototeca Zeri of the University of Bologna highlights a significant presence of manuscripts and printed texts among the objects depicted in the paintings. Between these “painted deceptions” we find musical scores, ephemera, playing cards, devotional prints, invitations, posters and other bureaucratic materials, but also engravings, printed maps, geometric tables and so on. From the study of the core of the “displayed scripts” (as Armando Petrucci and Antonio Castillo Gómez define them) new considerations come to light regarding their status, their use and the practices of their diffusion and consumption in the modern age
