"The theme of urban and peri-urban recreation is classic in many countries; studies are numerous on this subject and often multidisciplinary." (B. Barbier, 1983, p. 591). Leisure activities are certainly old and multiform in urban areas. The links between cinema, tourism and urbanization are quite obvious. African urbanization predates European colonization. Nevertheless, it is the commercial, industrial, administrative and recreational activities of the European colonization which favored the expansion of several cities in Africa. Colonization also equipped African cities with movie theaters. With the methodology of bibliographic research and qualitative field surveys, 57 movie theaters were counted in Bamako, of which 3 were functional for the general public in 2022.  The question is: how to reinvigorate cinematic leisure activities, which have been abandoned for about 3 decades, in Bamako, the main city of Mali? The objective is to understand the reasons for the lack of interest in cinema attendance in Bamako for about 3 decades. The hypothesis is that in the tourist animation of Bamako, movie theaters are not at all important at present

The links between cinema, tourism and urbanization are quite obvious. African urbanization predates European colonization. Nevertheless, it was the commercial, industrial, administrative and recreational activities of European colonization that favored the expansion of several cities in Africa. Colonization has also equipped African cities with cinemas, hence the birth of urban leisure in Africa for the development of tourist activities. By adopting a methodology including bibliographic research and field interview surveys, this study aims to understand the reasons for the lack of interest in cinema attendance in Bamako for about 3 decades. The question is: how to reinvigorate cinematic leisure, which has been abandoned for about 3 decades, in Bamako, the main city of Mali The hypothesis is that in the tourist animation of Bamako, the cinemas are not at all important at present. The results reveal that: Bamako, the subject of this study, saw its first functional cinema in 1920. If in 1980, there were 15 functional cinemas in Bamako in 2022, there are only 3 functional cinemas. The dissolution of the cinematographic office of Mali in 1988 will lead to the closing of cinemas in Bamako. This closure will be accentuated, by the promotion of television then the growing distribution of films on DVD and CD Roms from the 1990s, explain the young people. These are the main reasons for the current abandonment of cinemas in Bamako.  Finally, the young people of Bamako suggest that the State build comfortable cinemas in each municipality of Bamako, with a view to reviving cinematographic activities in urban leisure and tourist activities in Bamako

This study observes the disruption of tourist flows in Mali from 1990 to 2020. Mali is a politically turbulent country and subject to an unprecedented security crisis since 2012. The crisis of the COVID 19 pandemic since December 2019, is added. As a result, tourism activities are frozen. International tourist flows are drying up for the destination “Mali”. The objective of this article aims to analyze the regressions of tourist visits in the statistical databases of Mali from 1990 to 2020, following the security crises and health risk of COVID-19. The methodology, in addition to bibliographical research, is essentially based on the compilation and analysis of annual data from Mali's tourism statistics. Thanks to the "Excel" software, certain indicators were assessed from 1990 to 2020. These are: the annual variation in arrivals and overnight stays, the evolution of the hotel stock and the accommodation capacity in number of rooms, the variation in the occupancy rate (TO) and the average length of stay (DMS) and finally the ranking of the top 5 countries sending tourists to Mali. The results reveal that arrivals and overnight stays have evolved respectively at an annual rate of 8.36% and 8.32% from 1990 to 2008. However, from 2008 to 2020, arrivals decline annually by 19.56% and overnight stays fall by 20.37% annually. Admittedly, the hotel stock and the number of rooms increase regularly and respectively by 9.37% and 7.57% from 1990 to 2020. It is also during this period that the occupancy rate (TO) amounts on average to 13.66% and the average length of stay (DMS) is 2 days. From 1990 to 2020, France with a market share of 40%, remains the main source of international visitors to Mali.

The objective of this study is to explore the ways of reviving a traditional dance called Bara which has been abandoned in the rural commune of Pogo in the Segou region of Mali. Nowadays, the threats to the Bara are enormous: the expansion of modern dances and Islam. The question is how to reinvigorate the customary Bara dance in the Bamanan environment in the rural commune of Pogo? This research, carried out using a methodology of qualitative and quantitative surveys among the population, reveals that the Bara dance is a very threatened Bamanan cultural heritage. Only the elderly know it. Young people do not know the Bara because it has been abandoned. The results of the study show that the Bara is a popular dance of rejoicing. It is a dance originating from Segou and is performed in three parts. The end-of-year festival was the main occasion for the organisation of the Bara. Nowadays the revival of the Bara could be achieved through the annual performances of the masks and other cultural events such as the Independence Day.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
