How dramatic events can affect emotionality in social posting: The impact of covid-19 on reddit
The COVID-19 outbreak impacted almost all the aspects of ordinary life. In this context, social networks quickly started playing the role of a sounding board for the content produced by people. Studying how dramatic events affect the way people interact with each other and react to poorly known situations is recognized as a relevant research task. Since automatically identifying country-based COVID-19 social posts on generalized social networks, like Twitter and Facebook, is a difficult task, in this work we concentrate on Reddit megathreads, which provide a unique opportunity to study focused reactions of people by both topic and country. We analyze specific reactions and we compare them with a “normal” period, not affected by the pandemic; in particular, we consider structural variations in social posting behavior, emotional reactions under the Plutchik model of basic emotions, and emotional reactions under unconventional emotions, such as skepticism, particularly relevant in the COVID-19 context
Generalizing identity-based string comparison metrics: Framework and techniques
In this paper, we propose a framework that aims at handling metrics among strings defined over heterogeneous alphabets. Furthermore, we illustrate in detail its application to generalize one of the most important string metrics, namely the edit distance. This last activity leads us to define the Multi-Parameterized Edit Distance (MPED). As for this last metric, we investigate its computational properties and solution algorithms, and we present several experiments for its evaluation. As a final contribution, we provide several notes about some possible applications of MPED and other generalized metrics in different scenarios
How Metadata Can Support the Study of Neurological Disorders: An Application to the Alzheimer’s Disease
This paper deals with the analysis of neurological disorders. In particular we focus on the potentialities of metadata to support the analysis process. We focus on the analysis of the Alzheimer disease and we show how computer-based analysis of metadata associated with clinical observations may help doctors in understanding clinical stages of a patient. We also introduce a general framework than can help in understanding the hypothetical course of the disease by simulating degeneration of the patient by metadata alteration
Improving protein secondary structure predictions by prediction fusion
Protein secondary structure prediction is still a challenging problem at today. Even if a number of prediction methods have been presented in the literature, the various prediction tools that are available on-line produce results whose quality is not always fully satisfactory. Therefore, a user has to know which predictor to use for a given protein to be analyzed. In this paper, we propose a server implementing a method to improve the accuracy in protein secondary structure prediction. The method is based on integrating the prediction results computed by some available on-line prediction tools to obtain a combined prediction of higher quality. Given an input protein p whose secondary structure has to be predicted, and a group of proteins F, whose secondary structures are known, the server currently works according to a two phase approach: (i) it selects a set of predictors good at predicting the secondary structure of proteins in F (and, therefore, supposedly, that of p as well), and (ii) it integrates the prediction results delivered for p by the selected team of prediction tools. Therefore, by exploiting our system, the user is relieved of the burden of selecting the most appropriate predictor for the given input protein being, at the same time, assumed that a prediction result at least as good as the best available one will be delivered. The correctness of the resulting prediction is measured referring to EVA accuracy parameters used in several editions of CASP
